I had tonsillitis a couple of weeks ago, pharmacist gave antibiotics for 5 days as there was white spots on my tonsils, they seemed to work. I’ve had a really busy week this week so haven’t really had chance to pace myself and since yesterday my throat has been bad again. Im in bed crying, just feel generally rubbish and got ear ache. I think the tonsillitis has come back. I’ve had tonsillitis a few times over the years but it’s never come back like this. Due to go on holiday in a couple of days and don’t know what to do. It’s bank holiday weekend so won’t be able to get doctors appointments, pharmacist won’t be able to prescribe more antibiotics they said before 5 days is the max they can do, and difflam isn’t helping. Please help!

If it’s a U.K. based holiday then can you either delay by a day or go to a pharmacy when you get there?

Mamimoo · 30/03/2024 08:05

My dd had tonsilitis twice recently within a few weeks of eachother. Both times she was very poorly over a weekend and both times I managed to get antibiotics through 111.

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 08:07

Thank you everyone. Does anyone know when the 111 doctor calls will he ask for me to go somewhere to be seen? Is it likely he ll prescribe another course over the phone? I hate tonsilitis , I’m just really concerned about why it’s come back a week later. And the antibiotics the first tjme made me feel rubbish so even if he prescribes them i ll be feeling rubbish on holiday next week?

When I had tonsillitis I was prescribed by a nurse over the phone and it was sent to a pharmacy.

Explain about the antibiotics not agreeing with you and that you still have white spots on your tonsils.

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 08:29

Ok, i just don’t know why the white spots disappeared and now they are back. I know I’ve had a busy week when I perhaps should’ve taken it easier but I was just trying to get everything done work wise before the holiday. I know I sound like a broken record but do you think it’ll be ok? Because I hardly slept I’m knackered which I think is making me more upset. I just really wanted to enjoy the holiday and break from work but at the moment I don’t even want to get out of bed!

My ears feel blocked/ sensitive is that likely to be from the throat issue too?

OP posts:
Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 08:44

Ive just double checked and the white spots are definitely there. 111 said the call back would be in the next 6 hours, I think I’m just going to be crying all day! I really don’t want to go back on the antibiotics again but I know because there are white spots I need them. The holiday is ruined isn’t it 😟

OP posts:
Pigeonqueen · 30/03/2024 08:57

Why are you so worried about taking more antibiotics if you need them? If you need them you need them! All the stuff in the media about not taking them is making people worry about them for the wrong reasons! I have had terrible tonsillitis before and it took 3 different lots of antibiotics back to back to finally clear it. Hopefully 111 will call back soon and you’ll be able to get sorted.

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 09:16

@Pigeonqueen i think because of how the antibiotics made me feel last time so I think I ll be feeling poorly on holiday even if I have them won’t I. They just made me feel really tired and bad stomach but I don’t know if that’s because I was having 8 a day over 5 days which seems quite a lot? I just feel really miserable with it don’t feel like I can think straight, it’s just not ideal timing right ahead of the holiday.

Sympathy OP. I had quinsy three times in three months last year and needed iv antibiotics and hospital each time. One of those times I was abroad. It was horrible. In the end I used private insurance to get the damn tonsils removed.

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 09:34

What actually causes bacterial tonsillitis? What would everyone else do about the holiday? Would you go even if it meant resting?

OP posts:
Fullofpudding · 30/03/2024 09:38

If it's a continuation of antibiotics you might not even feel crap as your body is somewhat used to them.

Ilikeviognier · 30/03/2024 09:39

Try and get Antbiotics today - ring 111/ so you can go. Unfortunately, my understanding from my quinsy Op is that the more you get it, the more buggered your tonsils become. This creates pockets which allow the disease to hide and reappear again when you’re rundown. Get rid!

BroughttoyoubyBerocca · 30/03/2024 09:40

Get more antibiotics, gargle warm salty water. Sleep

Gemstonebeach · 30/03/2024 09:45

You are not a wuss! It’s painful!!!! I know it can’t really be compared due to how easily it is transmitted and how sick some people get, but I’ve had covid twice and rsv and tonsillitis have been much much worse pain wise.

Booforcurtains · 30/03/2024 10:08

Please make sure you talk to a doctor, when to tonsillitis returns it can be even more vicious 2nd time around. Absolutely you need more antibiotics asap.

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 10:09

I hope they call soon, I’m really not feeling that great.

SandysMam · 30/03/2024 10:15

Sympathies Op, it makes you feel so shitty!
Hope you get treated soon. In case this is a regular thing, manuka honey is good (a spoonful twice a day). I used to suffer with constant throat infections, I had the pneumonia jab for another condition and touch wood haven’t had it since! Not sure if this is coincidence or not but might have been the same bacteria causing mine hence why the vaccine helped. You can pay to get this privately if it’s worth a try.
Get well soon and hope you can enjoy your holiday.

CarrotCake01 · 30/03/2024 10:40

Antibiotics aren't always suitable for treating tonsillitis, it depends whether it's bacterial or viral.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 30/03/2024 10:49

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 08:30

My ears feel blocked/ sensitive is that likely to be from the throat issue too?

Possibly. I had really bad tonsillitis about 14 years ago. Where the infection spread up into my ear and burst my eardrum. The pain was immense although pretty much disappeared as soon as it burst. It took around 6 weeks to heal and I couldn't get my ear wet at all during that time. I did get tonsillitis a few years later. Unfortunately right on the day we boarding a Caribbean cruise. Everyone was having a wonderful time during the sail away party. Me fast asleep on a wooden bench. I ended up going to the on board medical facility where the Dr gave me antibiotics and paracetamol for a high temperature. Much to the disgust of my exH cos it cost $150 money well spent in my opinion. No way was I missing out on a week of lovely food. My insurance did pay of it back anyway once we got back home.

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 11:12

Im still waiting for the 111 call back, I’ve popped to boots who said the pharmacist couldn’t do anything else so 111 was the best way to go. I really don’t know what to do about the holiday. @IBegYourBiggestPardon are you glad you still went on the cruise when you had tonsilitis? I think @CarrotCake01 white spots on the tonsils are a sign of it being bacterial? Thank you everyone for talking me through this morning, it’s helping me to forget a little how miserable I’m feeling! I know so many people have it worse so I feel bad for making such a big thing about it.

Gymnoob · 30/03/2024 11:20

Omg I just had this. It’s fucking everywhere. It did ruin my holiday as I didn’t know what it was. After I finally figured out what it was dp and my ds both started coming down. 111 prescribed antibiotics over the phone as I was not taking any shit at that point. Their holiday was saved. You know what it is and you know what you need. Go get it OP!

Cloud44 · 30/03/2024 11:23

Is it actually everywhere? If so that would partly explain why I’ve got it because I am susceptible to it.
Is bacterial tonsilitis contagious? As in for others in the house.
How did you feel with it @Gymnoob ? It’s not just a sore throat or white spots on my tonsils I just feel bleugh! Do you mind me asking how long your antibiotics course was for?

Sorry to hear that. What about private GP appointment through apps such as Babylon. You'll get video call consultation and a private prescription which will be more expensive but might help. Alternatively, make your way to A&E and get seen there. Make sure you also mention the earache whichever route you take. If you are flying earache isn't fun and can be risky. If you do get meds please try and rest as much as possible both before and on your hols. Your body is telling you it needs rest. Good luck!

We have private gp through work. I used them when I had tonsillitis last year. Got antibiotics prescribed, which I did have to pay for, and was very surprised that the prescription was a couple of £ cheaper than NHS!
