Today I was with friend at her house, she is eastern european and had tonnes of these little green mats lying around.

What purpose could they serve?

Also they were on the floor, not chairs or sofa.

I’m not sure - could you ask her? I’m sure she wouldn’t mind you asking. I guess she’d just say if she didn’t want to tell you.

Why wouldn't you ask her? Aren't they just those chair cushions that velcro or tie on to wooden chairs?

They're chair cushions, surely? Was she playing The Floor is Lava?

No, the kids were at school. She also didnt have chairs for some reason.

They’re seat cushions- I would guess they’re for extra seating for guests. In some cultures they are more comfortable sitting on the floor.

There was however no seating, except a small sofa.

Well maybe she is from a culture where they prefer to sit on the floor?

Surely it’s not that difficult to understand?

For kneeling on to pray, or some kind of exercise or meditation? I've not seen this before. Definitely ask, she'll probably be happy to tell you. It might be some cultural thing. Or she might just like sitting on the floor? Haha

There were like 6 of them though, and arranged in a square.

It sounds like she's currently short of seating and that's all she has.

Yes, I think this is the case as well.

I leave my kids stuff on the floor when they’re at school too - especially stuff like that. It looks like they sit on the floor mostly (I prefer that too with kids)

OK, but if she doesn't own any chairs, and has these cushions arranged on the floor as if they were around a table, doesn't that suggest she's using them as (possibly temporary) chair replacements, or, if she's from a culture for whom floor sitting is normal, these are her chair equivalents.

Sitting on them on the floor. Perhaps for meditating on them.

Is she into budhism or yoga etc?

Why didn't you just ask??

Probably just extra seating without bulky chairs or extra sofas.

Wouldnt sitting on the sofa be easier? There was no table near the sofa though.

Seriously? You were in the room with these cushions and their owner, and didn't ask her about them, and now you're going to text and say 'Look, X, I've been eaten up with curiosity about your cushions since earlier -- what are they for?'

Sounds far more fun than 'they're for sitting on'! If I had some I'd try it myself 😁

I just felt awkward about them, and didnt want to offend her JIC.

So you stood up the whole time?

Or did you sit on the little mats?

It's a seat pad and she is using it to make sitting on the floor more comfortable. I used to do this when DS was tiny and I had to spend hours playing railways and building towers on the floor.
