To ask which American accents you love/hate?

This is not USA bashing thread - so please don't take offence.

There are some American (north) accents that I could listen to all day and others that (no matter the content of discourse) make me tune out.

I am from the UK for context and know that I may be unreasonable but cannot shake the initial vibe you get from an accent.

For starters I am absolutely baffled by the Boston accent and also the preppy languid accent of some from New York.

Fascinated to know what USA accents irritate you and more importantly what USA mumsnetters think?

Are there accents like in UK that are stereotypical, annoying, false or make you judge?

I find them all incredibly sexy. Lucky I don’t live in the States or I’d be permanently falling for everyone.

BackToItThen · 21/03/2024 22:03

I quite like how some people speak in Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and Oklahoma. I like a lot of current male country singers and a lot are from those places.

BackToItThen · 21/03/2024 22:06

I forgot to say I don’t like the New York accent.

As for UK, there’s not many I like. 😬

faffadoodledo · 21/03/2024 22:09

I have a fondness for a Texan accent. It's those long dipthongs.
My children returned from a spell living there with a discernible twang. Very cute

RaraRachael · 21/03/2024 22:32

I like the southern US accents but not keen on NY. Tbh most of the rest sounds very similar to me (when I know they aren't)

DumpsterBaby · 21/03/2024 22:33

Absolutely love accents from South American states - Alabama, Georgia, north Florida. When I first met my partner, who is from one of these states, and I heard him speak for the first time, I knew I was doomed. Haha. I could listen to him speak all day every day.

I dislike the ‘valley girl’ type accent.

Moanranger · 21/03/2024 22:47

Most of the really nasal American accents are hard to listen to - such as Chicago & Midwest, Michigan, etc.
Minnesota & North Dakota are kinda cute, & some parts of the Dakotas sound distinctly German.
A really strong southern “country” accent (this is a prejudice) make the speaker sound stupid. A refined Georgia/So or No Carolina accent is lovely.
New Orleans accent is interesting.
New Jersey/New York is harsh.
(I am from the US)

Jk987 · 21/03/2024 22:49

I just love the New York accent! It's charismatic and expressive and always captures my attention!

Miri13 · 21/03/2024 22:52

LI’m I’ve the whole Southern accent from places like Georgia etc also quite like the Mass. accent.

NashvilleQueen · 21/03/2024 22:52

I love southern states and New York in particular but don't mind any save for that affected way of speaking a lot of TikTokers have that's very exaggerated and drawn out. I don't think that is an accent thing but a style that has been adopted.

Miri13 · 21/03/2024 22:53

Damn auto correct meant to say love

RaraRachael · 21/03/2024 22:57

It's not really an accent thing but a lot of Americans can't seem to utter a sentence without inserting "like" in between every word. It means absolutely nothing.

RoberttPostesChild · 21/03/2024 23:26

I love American accents, most of them sound pretty good to me. I agree with @Moanranger about nasal accents, not the best and also very strong NY (Brooklyn?) accent, not great.
The worst by far is the dreaded California fry - probably more a mannerism than an accent.
I can't get enough of Katharine Hepburn's growl or Audrey's transatlantic purr in Breakfast at Tiffany's but these are long gone I expect?
I really enjoy a sweet Georgia accent and also a little bit of Texas, yes ma'am!

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 22/03/2024 00:38

I love the Boston/New England accent.

coxesorangepippin · 22/03/2024 00:38

I like them all

DramaAlpaca · 22/03/2024 01:08

If he sounds all drawling and southern like Sawyer from Lost (yes, I'm old) then I'm smitten.

A harsh, nasal NY accent doesn't do a thing for me.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 22/03/2024 04:28

I loveeee the deep south accents they are great. Really dislike the really squeaky accents, think of those disney stars, does my head in as so piercing through my brain. Also like New York and Boston accent.
Am Irish and lived in U.K for years and so many accents from all over and I love the South African accent.

Containerhome · 22/03/2024 04:41

I like southern as per pp. I don't really dislike any accents from anywhere really. I like how different we all sound. Same for the UK

mjf981 · 22/03/2024 05:13

Love Kentucky, Tennessee, Carolinas accent. I spent some time in Lexington and after 2 days I started talking like them!

Really dislike NY, Boston (very odd accent), and upper midwest (Wis-Can-son etc)

CormorantStrikesBack · 22/03/2024 06:07

I don’t like the Yooper accent of Michigan Upper Peninsula, find it quite irritating.

YesItsMe44 · 22/03/2024 07:25

I'm from the states and I agree with the insertion of the word "like" in every sentence. Seems to be more prevalent since the 90s. Could be I just noticeditas my kids were becoming teens then! My daughter did it and I used to count how many times, mimic it back, and threaten to dock her allowance.

I don't have a favorite, but areas of the deep south Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, etc., I find frustrating with the slow drawn out drawl. I've started reading about what migrants settled where and their influence on regional accents, etc.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 22/03/2024 08:55

I like the Arkansas accent. Bill Clinton’s voice used to give me the shivers.

Saddlesore · 22/03/2024 09:09

Love so many of the American accents, especially the soft Southern ones. What sets my teeth on edge though are when American women talk out of the back of their throat in a way that makes their voices "gravelly" (think Marge Simpson!). It's not so common here, but when I do hear it I have to restrain myself from offering them a Strepsil.

greeneggsandhamhocks · 22/03/2024 20:16

My mother's side of the family is from Newark New Jersey (like Tony Soprano). I find the accent very soothing and nostalgic.

Thatnameistaken · 22/03/2024 20:18

The only one I really like is the far north /Minnesota accent
