To ask which American accents you love/hate?

This is not USA bashing thread - so please don't take offence.

There are some American (north) accents that I could listen to all day and others that (no matter the content of discourse) make me tune out.

I am from the UK for context and know that I may be unreasonable but cannot shake the initial vibe you get from an accent.

For starters I am absolutely baffled by the Boston accent and also the preppy languid accent of some from New York.

Fascinated to know what USA accents irritate you and more importantly what USA mumsnetters think?

Are there accents like in UK that are stereotypical, annoying, false or make you judge?

I'm from Texas so I am biased with the love of Texan accents.

An accent that I do love is the accent of my New York City-based cousins. They are Puerto Rican/Mexican-Americans so they have a distinct accent which is a bit like the actress, Rosie Perez.

I like the southern US accents. I don't like the politics of most of those states, but they sound good to me!

BurbageBrook · 22/03/2024 20:47

Oh and same as PP I don't dislike any accents. I enjoy the diversity of the English language.

I'm a sucker for an American accent I must admit. Matthew McConnaughey has a lovely drawl. So warm and musical. It's 75% of what makes him attractive.

I'm trying to think of an unattractive American accent and maybe the Minnesota one (I think) can sound a bit comical. Not awful though.

I love the more southern accents, I watch Rhett and Link videos and they have a beautiful tone in their speaking voice and patterns. I don’t particularly dislike any American accent, Boston is a bit jarring and some Californian ones can come over as ‘whiny’ (but I suspect that’s just social media influencers more than reality).

I find them all incredibly sexy. Lucky I don’t live in the States or I’d be permanently falling for everyone.

This x million

I dislike Boston and Minnesota accents . And Spencer from Criminal Minds. His accent is irritating.

Topofthemountain · 22/03/2024 23:50

I hadn't really acknowledged different dialects until I started listening to American podcasts, and some of the presenters helpfully point out different ones (when relevant)

I still couldn't place any of them, but at least I know there is a difference.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 22/03/2024 23:52

I honestly don't think there are any accents I don't like, whether UK regional, other English speaking country, or accents of non-native speakers. I don't have much of an accent myself so I envy people who do and enjoy listening to them. There are some speech traits I find annoying, like vocal fry, but not accents.

Really dislike New Jersey and real southern accents. We have lots of family and friends in CA, I love that accent.

Labraradabrador · 23/03/2024 00:04

American here. I think there are a lot of accents you are grouping together that to my mind are distinct -I grew up in the south, and to me there is a massive difference between Georgia and Texas. Within Louisiana, there is a big difference between north and south in the state. Boston is distinct from NY or NJ.

conversely ihave trouble with uk regional accents despite living her 10+ years unless it is really strong and i am really paying attention.

mondaytosunday · 23/03/2024 00:15

Im with @Moanranger - certainly about the southern accents. Those NASA broadcasts and it was hard to reconcile the drawl with the stuff they were saying. I grew up
In the States. New York can be pretty harsh.
However just came back from Durham here and found the accent charming (also because everyone was so nice). Vacuous 'valley girl' talk is awful, as is New Jersey. Loads of accents here I can't bear either.
