To think almost everybody is addicted to Codeine

I am a pharmacy dispenser and noticed so many people by this frequently. Any thoughts?

🤔

PrinceLouisWeirdFinger · 18/03/2024 14:54

I’m not. I’ll have a Lemsip now and again when I’m feeling a bit fluey.

WarshipRocinante · 18/03/2024 14:54

I had it for the first time last week. My mum gave me it and it was the first time in 4 days that I wasn’t in pain and could sleep. Took it for 3 days, until I was getting better and didn’t need pain relief. I am not feeling the need to go get a hit of codeine.
Is it really that bad amongst the general pop?

Soubriquet · 18/03/2024 14:54

Nope. I take it when I’m in severe pain, but I can go months without taking any

Lougle · 18/03/2024 14:54

No, not at all.

WhereIsMyLight · 18/03/2024 14:54

Confirmation bias. You’re a pharmacy dispenser so see more people buy codeine. You will see people repeatedly buying codeine and it seems like a lot of people, so everyone is addicted. But it’s not the case, it’s just the environment you’re in.

Pirelli · 18/03/2024 14:55

No, I wouldn't ever take it and I don't think I've ever been given it (although I may have been in hospital and had it).

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 18/03/2024 14:55

Erm. Not sure I've ever taken it? Didn't know you could buy it, except mixed with paracetamol which my DH had for a torn ligament once.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/03/2024 14:55

Took for a few days for back pain, not been addicted.

Herdinggoats · 18/03/2024 14:55

Nope not here! Unless I am the exception that proves your rule…oh wait a load of people have posted before me that they are all fine too…

warmmfeet · 18/03/2024 14:55

Never taken it and don't know anyone who regularly takes it. My 86 year old dad was prescribed it for hip pain but stopped taking it after 2 weeks because it made him feel very tired

Dewdilly · 18/03/2024 14:56

Er, no. I don’t know anyone who takes codeine. Even when I’ve been prescribed it, I feel no need or desire to take it for more than a few days. Even those I know who have been prescribed it stop quickly because they don’t like the accompanying constipation.

Tarmacadamia · 18/03/2024 14:56

No of course we're not all addicted to codeine, don't be so daft.

CoffeeWithCheese · 18/03/2024 14:57

Very rare I even take a paracetamol to be honest. Mainly because I'm too bloody disorganised to have them in the house, but also because apparently I've got a really impressive pain threshold.

DrJoanAllenby · 18/03/2024 14:57

I'm not.

AristotelianPhysics · 18/03/2024 14:57

As a ‘pharmacy dispenser’ you should know that people can’t buy codeine OTC, just low strength co codamol.

Movinghouseatlast · 18/03/2024 14:57

I took it once when I had dry socket. It sent me totally loopy so I've never taken it again even with frozen shoulder.

My friend is addicted to it. She actually went behind the counter in Boots when they refused to sell it to her! They had to call security.

DillDanding · 18/03/2024 14:57

I don’t think I’ve ever had it. So it’s a no from me.

Fast800 · 18/03/2024 14:58

Nope, I’m not. The couple of times I’ve taken it I’ve been violently sick. As far as I’m aware DH hasn’t even taken it once.

Peaceandquietwithmydog · 18/03/2024 14:58

This ! If you work on cigarette counter in Sainsburys everyone smokes ,if you work in off licence, everyone is alcoholic ,MacDonalds ,everyone eats unhealthily…and so it goes on !

TheBirdintheCave · 18/03/2024 14:58

I'm actually Codeine resistant (and so is my mum). It does nothing for me as a painkiller except make me dizzy 🙃

DiscoDragon · 18/03/2024 14:58

I've only known one person who took it regularly, my dp's late mother was on a strong dose for arthritis. Personally I can't seem to tolerate it, on the few occasions I've been prescribed it the tablets have made me feel really ill. My mum is the same.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/03/2024 14:58

I can't take codeine at all, so I'm definitely not addicted. But I think PP was right with the confirmation bias.

I work in a supermarket and I sell LOADS of alcohol, mostly to the same people, every day. I know THOSE people might well have a problem with alcohol. I don't extrapolate that to mean that EVERYONE does.

Zaxi · 18/03/2024 14:58

nope - makes me feel sick to take it

sexnotgenders · 18/03/2024 14:58

Nope, definitely not addicted. Can't stand the stuff, makes me feel really light headed and queasy.

In your line of work of course you see lots of people buying it. That doesn't mean the whole population are taking it. It's like a librarian commenting that everyone is always reading. They just only ever see people with books
