I am a pharmacy dispenser and noticed so many people by this frequently. Any thoughts?

High strength codeine stops you pooing so i can’t see the attraction in becoming addicted to it

Gazelda · 18/03/2024 15:06

Not me.

Confirmation bias. You’re a pharmacy dispenser so see more people buy codeine. You will see people repeatedly buying codeine and it seems like a lot of people, so everyone is addicted. But it’s not the case, it’s just the environment you’re in.

Bingo! Of course you see people buying it - it being low strength co-codamol, not codeine on its own (which is prescription only, as you should know) - as it can only be bought from the pharmacy.

I take it when necessary - even have some 30/500 prescribed for me when necessary - but that's not every day, or even every week or every month, just when is necessary. I can't take NSAIDs, so there aren't a lot of options left for when paracetamol just isn't cutting it.

loudbatperson · 18/03/2024 15:06

No, you just see a lot of people buying it due to your job. They can't buy straight codeine anyway, only mixed into other formulations with paracetamol or ibuprofen etc..

I have some very strong straight codeine, prescribed for me, which I take when needed due to a condition which sometimes flares up. But I can count on one hand the times I need to over a year and only ever for a few days at a time. So I use codeine but am certainly not addicted.

Same! Just weird waking dreams. I feel so out of it that I would rather deal with the pain and ask to switch to paracetamol/ibuprofen as soon as possible.

DGM can't take opioid painkillers at all as she starts hallucinating.

Last time I had them it was a talking cat with fused shut eyes trying to convince me to eat some wafers that I just knew were poisoned the time before a floral tunnel opened on the ceiling on my hospital room and I was going to be sucked into it 😂

VickyEadieofThigh · 18/03/2024 15:06

100% of the people in my house are not. 100% of the people in my brother's house are not. I can ask all my friends if you like...

Thedance · 18/03/2024 15:08

I don't think think I have ever taken Codine. I have paracetamol or disprin if I feel I need painkillers which is rarely

StopTheGreyness · 18/03/2024 15:09

Nope. I have a chronic pain condition that fluctuates. I was prescribed two codeine tablets a day years ago and I only take them when I need them, I can come off codeine with no side effects and not take it for weeks at a time. I never take anything else containing codeine so I've never increased the dose at all. Not everyone gets addicted to it, I don't get any kind of buzz off it at all. I recently had a medication review and my doctor was completely satisfied that I am not addicted in any way. I've taken it for 23 years.

Interesting first post. Bit brief, mind.

Maybe the 97% who voted YABU will help with your erm, professional observations.

So does Ozempic, don't see the point of that either.

Precisely.
I can’t take codeiene, it makes me pass out.

Bunnyhair · 18/03/2024 15:11

I buy a packet of Solpadeine Max about once a year, when I run out of migraine meds. It’s a last resort. It doesn’t work very well, and I’d rather have the migraine meds.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 18/03/2024 15:11

I am prescribed it.The constipation is enough to stop me getting addicted. I only take it when I really need too despite having a constant supply.

pointythings · 18/03/2024 15:14

Your sample is self selecting and not representative of the general population. Maybe study statistics for a bit?

butterfly0404 · 18/03/2024 15:15

Well I'm not, I'm allergic to it, as is my daughter who has the same reaction as me. Hateful stuff.

FedUpMumof10YO · 18/03/2024 15:15

It's good stuff. I have taken when not in pain for the hit.

Though the trade off is you can't poop. So luckily didn't form a habit.

CaptainMyCaptain · 18/03/2024 15:15

I can't take codeine it makes me puke. I can only take paracetamol and use it sparingly.

Taylormiffed · 18/03/2024 15:18

Eeew, nope. Horrible stuff.
Had it once post op. It sent my heart all over the place and gave me weird dreams. Decided to muddle through with paracetamol and ibuprofen after that. Can't tolerate morphine either. Or anything strong tbh.

BeaRF75 · 18/03/2024 15:20

Rubbish! I took it once, 12 years ago, when in such severe pain that I ended up in hospital the following day. Never wanted or needed it before or since.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 18/03/2024 15:21

Never take it.I was sent home from hospital with some after surgery and I didn't like the way it made me feel. Decided the pain was easier to deal with than the effects of the pain relief.

Anothnamechang · 18/03/2024 15:21

I’ve been on strong codeine and although it took away the pain, I felt absolutely terrible with it! I was so nauseous and dizzy. I’m not sure I would ever get hooked to feeling that way!

eldorado02 · 18/03/2024 15:22

I’ve never had it.

Justcallmebebes · 18/03/2024 15:23

My mother was an opiate addict. I never, ever touch the stuff

Arrestedmanevolence · 18/03/2024 15:23

Being a pharmacy dispenser you are experiencing a restriction of range in your sampling.

If you go down to the cinema and work there for a bit you'll probably find that "almost everybody is addicted to" popcorn.

Not necessarily. Constipation is a possible side effect but like most side effects it doesn't affect everyone
