To think I could feel better two hours after first antibiotic

I’ve just come back from hospital with kidney infection suspected. They prescribed me ciprofluoxin and I swear I feel a bit better after one tablet ? Is this placebo effect on my brain or possible? Also anyone had a kidney infection but had a negative urine dip?

It's probably relief that you are feeling because you have been diagnosed and on a treatment plan, rather than it being the antibiotic. You've focused on the wrong part.

Lennon80 · 10/03/2024 17:16

They aren’t actual sure it is and saying I need to organise a scan so I’m still not convinced but I’m thinking desperately maybe it’s working because I don’t want it to be anything more serious? (Previously had cancer). But I took the first one felt really sleepy for two hours now feel more normal in terms of bladder function?

I usually feel worse for a bit.

Hope you continue to feel better!

No, they absolutely work fast as long as it’s the right AB for the infection. I’m usually feeling much better within hours

user1567879654445 · 10/03/2024 17:19

And yes, often negative dip.

smileyplant · 10/03/2024 17:22

I get them quite often and yes I do often start to feel better once I have had a couple of doses so not impossible. To be honest if I don't feel better (still tired etc but better) within two days it's usually the wrong antibiotic. Did they give you any IV antibiotics in hospital? That also speeds things up!

I always feel a bit better after this antibiotic usually by the second. I have kidney issues so I'm used to infection and different antibiotics, do finish them though don't be fooled into thinking you are better.

This. I have taken cipro before and it felt quite miraculous

WickWood · 10/03/2024 17:23

I've never had a kidney infection, but definitely with a bladder infection I feel better after the first tablet!

CantFindTheBeat · 10/03/2024 17:24

Hope you feel better, OP.

Antibiotics can definitely work fast if they're the right ones. And my mum always told me to take a double dose to start, which I've now done for 40 years myself!

Chanxex · 10/03/2024 17:24

With a uti I find that I feel better almost immediately. The relief is immense

smileyplant · 10/03/2024 17:24

Also often a negative dip/delayed positive dip. Once got a phone call from the gp with result of my sample that has been sent off 5 days before saying it was all fine and clear. I had been in hospital with the worst infection I had ever had for about 3 days by that point!

No IV no - just sent me with this and said need to be scanned and to follow up with GP. They said they’d send urine off for culture, would it definitely show up with that despite negative dip?

Your immune system is doing most of the work, the antibiotics just give it a bit of assistance. It could be that you are actually recovering naturally and taking the antibiotics has just coincided with this.
The antibiotic you are taking inhibits cell division so stops the bacteria multiplying and enabling your immune system to kill them off.

Oh wow so even with the culture it didn’t show up?

I have regular water infections but I rarely get a positive result from a urine sample, it’s frustrating

ilurktherforeiam · 10/03/2024 17:32

Following. I've taken one so far too, but not feeling any better.

Anyone know why you can't take probiotics at the same time as the antibiotics.

Hope you're better soon OP💐

PansyOatZebra · 10/03/2024 19:10

I’ve not had a kidney infection, but I used to get really regular UTIs and the antibiotics always worked fast as in a few hours and I was feeling so much better

smileyplant · 10/03/2024 19:30

@Lennon80 yep it's a bit hit and miss for me as whether I get anything from the culture. Take the anti-bs as prescribed and I'm sure you'll be feeling better soon :). Hopefully your culture will come back with something.

LibertySong · 10/03/2024 20:21

I've also found antibiotics for a UTI to work miraculously quickly and help me feel much better within a few hours

Lennon80 · 10/03/2024 20:24

Thanks everyone - thought it was placebo but I really do feel more ‘normal’ down there now too.

TheNinny · 10/03/2024 20:24

i’m like this with UTI’s, often the pain is lessened/gone a few hours after the first pill for me!

Sunnysideup999 · 10/03/2024 20:45

cipro has been wonderous for me for kidney and bladder infections. and it does work fast (within hours for me).

WhamBamThankU · 10/03/2024 20:48

No idea if they work that quickly, but you have my sympathies as I've ended up in hospital with a kidney infection a few years ago! The pain was something else. Hope you're getting plenty of rest.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/03/2024 20:50

Def as once in system antibs do really help
