I appreciate he means well and is trying to help people, but whenever he appears on the TV/radio I have to switch off. Why can't he be sensible and talk at a normal speed instead of trying to squeeze in as many words as possible?

Because he is passionate about helping people.

Because there are so many ways we're being fucked over by the government and big businesses.

Because the program length is too short.

Because he has ADHD.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/02/2024 11:16

I quite like him even if he does support Manchester City!

Does he have ADHD? That’s amazing - because people with ADHD can really struggle with money - it’s one of the many reasons I believe I have it and trying to get assessed.

FourLeggedBuckers · 27/02/2024 11:17

Of all the things to judge the bloke for, given how much effort he puts in to improving things for the general public 🙄 he has a lot to say, and doesn’t generally have quite enough time to articulate it.

Throwawayme · 27/02/2024 11:18

He's saved me a lot of money with his advice.

BiggerBoat1 · 27/02/2024 11:18

I agree with you. He is a good man, but not likeable in my opinion. He comes across as very, very pleased with himself. Still, he doesn't have to be nice to be doing a good job so good on him I guess.

I think it’s the way he talks especially when it’s a subject he is passionate about.
It seems ok for TV/radio programmes otherwise they would mention it to him.
Don’t you think your reaction of switching off is a bit extreme ?

commonground · 27/02/2024 11:24

He is quite shouty and busy. It's too frantic for me so I can't always take in what he says.

Being interviewed as a guest spot for eg is fair enough because often you do run out of time so have to cram as much in, but for his own programme I think they could structure it better so he doesn't have to do the stressy quick quick hurry up thing.

How unnecessarily rude. Gertrude says it’s one of many reasons.

louderthan · 27/02/2024 11:25

I like him and I don't like many people 😂

That’s why I made sure to say “one of the many things” so that I wouldn’t get smart arse answers like that.

There are many reason I’ve asked for an assessment, like many women having a son who is diagnosed has led me to identify traits that have been masked all my life. But please do just poke fun.

It is a recognised symptom of ADHD though, so it just surprised me that he had it. Good on him for finding a way to be a money saving expert.

Thank you so much for saying this as I found it very rude

I like and admire him. He's a very well off person who doesn't have to bother showing others not as well off how to manage their money.

He doesn't have to bother but he still does.

I just WISH WISH WISH he was prime minister.

edwinbear · 27/02/2024 11:30

I find him a bit patronising, but I work in finance so generally quite clued up on managing my money. He's done some fantastic work in terms of awareness though for people who don't take so much interest. Bereavement payments, council tax overpayments/rebanding come to mind, he's also lobbying for a change in current child benefit/childcare support to be applied to household income as opposed to individual. These are all good things.

Yes this is what I'm getting at. I caught a glimpse the other week (when I couldn't turn him off) and the audience started clapping something he said and he screamed "THERE'S NO TIME!" to shut them up.

I agree with you to a point. I like him well enough but the people who most need his help can't always follow him.

He need at calm down and speak slowly and clearly. That would help more people

I agree I sometimes struggle to understand what he's on about I worried it was just me !

augustusglupe · 27/02/2024 11:42

I quite fancy him….🤭

FourLeggedBuckers · 27/02/2024 11:44

Ah everyone’s an expert on communication. I suspect as many people would be bored and lose interest if he spoke more slowly. Covering information quickly and with a degree of urgency is more engaging.

You don’t have to like him, or relate to his communication style to accept that he helps a lot of people and, for some people, his style is desirable. If it wasn’t, he wouldn’t still be in demand.

HoneyWogan · 27/02/2024 11:47

I agree that he can sometimes come across as a bit frantic, but he really is one of the good guys out there. Having him as Prime Minister or Chancellor would be amazing - but I fear that he has far too much honesty and integrity to succeed there.

He's now a very rich man, so has no need at all to bother with helping ordinary folk with their financial concerns - yet he continues to soldier on doing so anyway, because it is his pure passion to stand up for the normal people.

The range of stuff that he covers and his speed of delivery are driven by his keenness to get the message across to as many people as possible. He knows that much of it will not be relevant to everybody's personal circumstances - which is partly why he rattles through it, so as not to lose those who are waiting for something that does affect them.

He may well go in at a much more basic level than you personally need, but that too can be a bit of a 'check your privilege' moment; be glad that you might not need his help nearly as much as other people do.

pickledandpuzzled · 27/02/2024 11:48

It clearly works. He’s not my type but I’m not his target audience. Mum constantly frets about what he has said, while also not being his target audience.

I get irritated by the opportunism of him sometimes- he encourages people to take advantage of various redress schemes that they perhaps should take more personal responsibility for, and of company mistakes which could perhaps be more appropriate to tell the company rather than encourage his followers to take advantage of it.

But overall- he’s a good thing and keeps companies accountable.

easylikeasundaymorn · 27/02/2024 11:49

Yanbu to dislike anyone for any reason but if his verbal communication style is off-putting just read the advice on his website...
if the message itself is useful seems a bit unnecessary to split hairs about the way it's delivered

Scarlettpixie · 27/02/2024 11:53

I think he is great and has done so much to help people. I don't tend to watch him on TV but get a lot out of the website. Maybe try that if his communication style isn't for you.
