To find Martin Lewis really irritating?

I appreciate he means well and is trying to help people, but whenever he appears on the TV/radio I have to switch off. Why can't he be sensible and talk at a normal speed instead of trying to squeeze in as many words as possible?

I don't really get people's obsession with him. He isn't some amazing kind hearted samaritan, he's a commission based salesman.

He's done it well and I accept his intentions are to show the best offer for you rather than him but ultimately everything is still a sales funnel to drive you through his products where he profits.

BlackBanter · 27/02/2024 13:00

I find him a little bit irritating if I’m honest. However, he is doing some great work at the moment, trying to reduce standing charges for electricity and gas, which disproportionately affects those on low incomes. The website MSE doesn’t usually have much new stuff these days. But I think it probably does still keep an eye on companies constantly trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

Justtellingya · 27/02/2024 13:01

I think he's great and I am not fond of that many folk on the telly.

He caters for the lowest common denominator. He regularly states the blindingly obvious and anyone with access to Google can easily find out any info they need.

He also glosses over his bad advice. A number of years ago he gave out some catastrophically poor advice regarding Icelandic banks and many people lost fortunes.

I think he’s a result of a poorly educated population needing to be spoon fed everything.

How incredibly patronising and offensive. Your post reeks of your contempt for the "poorly educated" in society. How awful to look down on anyone who might need help, information or advice.
Plus you are so wrong. A lot of the information that Martin Lewis advises upon is incredibly complex, and is not so easy to digest or summarise, even for those of us who don't consider ourselves to be part of the "poorly educated population".
Just to take one example, it is widely accepted that the benefits system in the UK is extremely complicated, yet apparently you think we can just google it to make sense of it all. What a ridiculous comment.
Martin Lewis must have saved people in the UK many thousands of ££s through his campaigning and advice over the years. His work has helped to influence and change government policy, he highlights injustice and unfairness, and in educating people about their rights and helping them save money he has positively changed many people's lives.
But you feel free to carry on googling.

VictoriaPink · 27/02/2024 13:39

God, I wish there were more people like Martin Lewis.

SunnieShine · 27/02/2024 13:39

He's brilliant. And I love how he explains things in simple terms.

I agree with you. He is a good man, but not likeable in my opinion. He comes across as very, very pleased with himself. Still, he doesn't have to be nice to be doing a good job so good on him I guess.

Think I agree with this

Also I used to work for a bank and lost count of the times I had a customer in the phone who had taken some of his advice to mean we basic couldn't make any charges full stop, had to pay market leading rates all the time and fulfill requests for 10 years worth of back statements posted out, for free , before they had ended the call.

A small number of customers basically thought the Money Saving Expert was there to absolve them of ever having to take any form of personal financial responsibility and due diligence ever again.

Throwawayme · 27/02/2024 11:18

He's saved me a lot of money with his advice.

He's made a lot of money giving it

shearwater2 · 27/02/2024 13:54

He has done so much good work and gives good advice but, yeah, I can't listen to him.

Ariela · 27/02/2024 14:27

Be thankful we got ML as the famous one, not one of his non-famous cousins who is truly awful and very much thinks he's wonderful.

Yesssssssssss · 27/02/2024 14:33

YABU. I cannot believe the thought would even enter your head. He's an amazing guy, totally on the side of the consumer, using his considerable energy, integrity and knowledge for our good.
It's a very uncharitable thought to have..... but I'll confess that I can't stand Mary Berry, and that is equally uncharitable of me.

I quite like him even if he does support Manchester City!

How very dare you.😁I like him even more now I know this.

Basilthebad · 27/02/2024 14:39

He gets my elderly aunt stressed with advice about scams. Then I get calls warning me about this that or the other. I think she thinks I fell off the Christmas tree. she doesn't use Internet and doest answer calls from numbers she doesn't know.

oldwhyno · 27/02/2024 14:53

He's a minor national treasure in my opinion, has created amazing resources to help people manage their money better, and campaigned on some important issues. But I know exactly what you mean about the production/presenting style on his show. It's not exactly relaxing!

This level of hero worship is insane. Other similar examples on this thread, but if you're not being facetious with your first paragraph, that's the most extreme one yet.

It's possible to think that someone's activities are generally positive while finding them irritating, not being interested in them, or whatever.

Itscatsallthewaydown · 27/02/2024 15:04

I think he’s fab. Thank god that someone is trying to help people who are struggling financially, because the cunts that are currently in government certainly aren’t interested

That's not a very balanced view though is it? Did you also lose count of the number of times customers were charged excessive and unfair bank charges? Or the millions of customers who were missold PPI that they neither asked for or needed?
You talk about personal responsibility, which is all fine, but what about the responsibility on the financial institutions in those situations? The banks would not have had to pay out £38 billion (yes £38 billion!) in repayment for missold PPI if they had been acting legally, responsibly and with due diligence. Responsibility goes both ways, but thankfully people like Martin Lewis exist to help redress the imbalance.

BlondeAmbition21 · 27/02/2024 15:46

@Ariela That hardly narrows it down - there are many cousins- but I assume you’re talking about the less famous one with the same initials. A little mean, methinks.

Not only that, but he deliberately created his website in a way to avoid having to register under the Financial Services Acts by making it such that he doesn't provide advice, but still benefits from commission by people following links. He was very smart to set it up that way to avoid the costs/hassle of registering under the financial services acts.

BlondeAmbition21 · 27/02/2024 15:49

@RubberyChicken Yes he has made money but has put most of it into a charitable educational trust. He has a pretty unflashy lifestyle all things considered.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 27/02/2024 15:50

The part where I said -

A) agree that he's doing a good thing even if he's not my cup of tea,

and

B) that I said a "small number " of customers,

I think demonstrates I wasn't making a sweeping generalisation and my view is pretty balanced.

Of course financial institutions should be called out on sneaky behaviour. Regulation and campaigners are excellent for making things better for the consumer.

There are still plenty of people about who take no responsibility for their finances and have no due diligence or bother to read any small print/Ts and Cs.
