63% rise in car insurance renewal quote!

buzzcutt · 26/02/2024 18:20

I've seen a few news articles about rising car insurance prices, but was shocked to see the Direct Line renewal quote for our 1.2 litre 11-year-old Ford Fiesta go up by 63%. No accidents, no changes.

We'll be shopping around, but every time we've shopped around in the past we've found nothing cheaper.

I guess we're not the only ones being hit by this? How much has yours gone up by?

£450 to £800

QforCucumber · 26/02/2024 18:22

Doubled - £240 to £485. I haven’t paid this much in over 20 years. Joys.

mitogoshi · 26/02/2024 18:23

Mine only went up £25 thankfully. I think it's quite area dependent, the scare stories about the rises started this time last year

fauconberg · 26/02/2024 18:24

Direct line are expensive. I saved a lot switching to admiral, although still much dearer than a few years ago.

RampantIvy · 26/02/2024 18:25

£389 to £583 Shock. I managed to negotiate from £614

lemmein · 26/02/2024 18:25

I got a quote a few days ago - me and DH, both 40s, driving 20+ years- no accidents - car 10 year old.

£1200 😳

endlessperiods · 26/02/2024 18:45

Mine was about £500, renewal quote over 1k!! I obviously cancelled the auto-renew on that one, shopped around and the best I could do was £700. Dreading what the house insurance renewal next month will be 😬

dontcallmelen · 26/02/2024 18:52

Same here 20+ years of accident free driving never made a claim premium doubled managed to get it for just under £500 it must be profiteering surely same with house insurance huge jump never made a claim.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 26/02/2024 18:53

£550 to £1250

It's not profiteering. Read the many many recent threads on the very same subject over the past few weeks.

Mostly down to EV's being written off

Mostly down to EV's being written off

Why is that?

Macandcheeese · 26/02/2024 19:07

My monthly payments went from £45 to £62 (without breakdown when it was included in the £45p/m) with 1st central, the only difference being my husbands SP30 expired in the past year. But managed to get a new quote via topcashback with Aviva for £44pm and £45 cashback. I'm in the West Midlands though, not sure if location makes a difference.

Starlightstarbright3 · 26/02/2024 19:13

Mine hasn’t really increased . However I did the Martin Lewis rule of do it 23 days before renewal which I previously haven’t done

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 26/02/2024 19:15

We’ve just had our house insurance quote - gone up by 30% despite no changes. Our car insurance is due up the end of next month and it’s a multi car policy. I’m not looking forward to that one…

ALunchbox · 26/02/2024 19:16

Mine was £240 more expensive but I shopped around and was able to find a similar deal as before (£300).

Dostadning · 26/02/2024 19:19

Mine was 102% increase but I had two accidents and had to pay £86 to protect my NCD. Thank God it's a small car.

Toomuchgoingon79 · 26/02/2024 19:21

Mines gone from £49 a month to £79 a month shopped around but the cheapest I could get was £6 cheaper. That's fully comp, breakdown, windscreen, keys, legal etc

Lottieskeeper · 26/02/2024 19:27

I just re insured my DHs car for us both to drive today.
Last year we paid £111, the renewal quote was £140 which I wasn't expecting to beat but a bit of shopping around and I got it for £109.
I'm really pleased with that because I'd heard all the scare stories about premiums shooting up.

Lottieskeeper · 26/02/2024 19:28

That's for the year not per month by the way

Mostly down to EV's being written off

Not only that as EV's are more expensive to insure anyway.

It's rise in cost of parts, increase cost of labour and garage costs as well. Basically the same as everything else costs have gone up.

I did mine last week the cost had gone up 50%, to £475, I did manage to drop it buy £100 by shopping around. But direct line when I looked was one of the most expensive at well over £600.

Littlebitpsycho · 26/02/2024 19:35

I must be the odd one out, sheilas wheels didn't want to quote at renewal so I started shopping around.

Was paying £59 a month and found insurance for this year for £37 a month, was mega surprised!

That's for a Mercedes ML320 4x4

gerteddy · 26/02/2024 19:40

£258 to £447 at renewal comparisons were around same price. Called them and got them down to £420.

Prior to the £258 year I used to get it under £200 every year. Infact when we had 2 cars we never paid more £400 for both cars 😭 sad times. Everything is just shooting upapart from my wages, not had a pay rise in the last 2 yrs 🙁

CurlewKate · 26/02/2024 19:41

Martin Lewis has a calculator thing on his website - we got ours down by loads.
