63% rise in car insurance renewal quote!

I've seen a few news articles about rising car insurance prices, but was shocked to see the Direct Line renewal quote for our 1.2 litre 11-year-old Ford Fiesta go up by 63%. No accidents, no changes.

We'll be shopping around, but every time we've shopped around in the past we've found nothing cheaper.

I guess we're not the only ones being hit by this? How much has yours gone up by?

I've had the same the last 2 renewals. Shopped around and easily got something similar to what I was previously paying. It seems that they don't want to retain customers these days. Even when you phone to cancel they don't try to price match.

mirror245 · 26/02/2024 21:01

Mine went from £250-£420. Couldn't get it cheaper anywhere else. Called my current insurer and got in down a bit to £380.

Bournetilly · 26/02/2024 23:50

£65 per month to £91 per month. I’ve tried to find a cheaper quote online and there isn’t any.

justonemorebikkie · 26/02/2024 23:52

I read it's because of Brexit - there's a shortage of car mechanics now and somehow that pushes the price up

Cornishclio · 26/02/2024 23:59

£235 to £562. I managed to get it down to £245 by changing insurers.

NewName24 · 27/02/2024 00:03

dh's went up 65%
Mine a bit under 10%

Same circumstances all round - no changes at all from last year.
Most unusually for us, we both happened to be with the same company too.

Absolutely no rhyme nor reason to it.

Obviously he did 3 different comparison sites, plus some companies that aren't on the comparison sites looking for better, and the renewal from current company remained the best Shock

99victoria · 27/02/2024 00:03

I paid £160 last year (fully comp). My renewal was £175 but I went on one of the comparison sites this week and got it for £127! Plus - did it through Top Cashback so will get £30 back. Annual insurance for under £100 - result!
I'd also read a lot about increases so i was surprised. Not sure why mine was so reasonable 🤔

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 27/02/2024 00:06

I paid £380 last year, I was getting quotes of £900. After scouring the sites I begrudgingly paid £620 😏

Mine hasn’t really increased . However I did the Martin Lewis rule of do it 23 days before renewal which I previously haven’t done

I'm twitching to check mine but I'm waiting for the right date!
Hoping it isn't a huge increase, I've got 8 years NCD and drive a 10 year old polo

Redglitter · 27/02/2024 00:26

Mine doubled but I got it back down to last years premium swapping companies

Definitely shop around , I have a similar Ford Fiesta to you, 12 years old. My insurance went up but only to around £370 for the year with LV

Floralnomad · 27/02/2024 01:29

Our sons insurance went down by £50 this year.

Mumof3girlsandaboy · 27/02/2024 02:41

Mine jumped from £43 a month to £84

Cars are so expensive to fix now, all the mandated safety equipment costs a fortune to replace.

Back in the day a cracked bumper was just a trip to the scrapyard, now that bumper will have parking sensors, maybe a radar unit and some LED lights. All will "need" to be replaced as the insurance company won't fit second hand or damaged electrics, and they have to be tested and calibrated. What was once a £150 job is now a £1500 job.

I had a small crack in my windscreen last November, not a problem I thought, I have Autoglass cover. Back in 2015 I had a windscreen replaced on my car, £50 excess for a £150 job.

This time, because my car has lane assist and a heads-up display, the electronics have to be calibrated at the dealership and the glass has a special coating for the HUD, so the whole thing cost £1200.

That's why insurance is now so expensive.

And EV batteries are written off at 30k a piece if the external case is so much as scratched.

Stupid rules!

Just done mine
Up £110 but I got £38 cashback via Quidco so £72 extra for the year
Not too bad considering some
