I’d love to be a night time security guard

You know the type that patrol old abandoned hospitals etc? I think it would be a great job, just wandering around all night with my dog.

Would you do it?

I'd be terrified of ghosts!

scorpiogirly · 25/02/2024 20:09

I wouldn't mind being one of those ones who sits in a cabin with the TV on though. I do think it would get boring and lose it's appeal after a while though.

Superawkward · 25/02/2024 20:10

Five nights at Freddies. That's all I will say.

Itscatsallthewaydown · 25/02/2024 20:10

Oh god no

bombastix · 25/02/2024 20:11

I did this once after leaving university. My instructions were if someone tried to break into the building (there was only a coffee machine in it) then I was to run away. No one came.

I sat in a chair and read a book for 12 hours. Easy money.

piglet81 · 25/02/2024 20:11

No, I am a very jumpy sort and this would be my idea of hell!

SheepAndSword · 25/02/2024 20:15

Would they let you bring your own dog though? Wouldn't they provide patrol dogs?

Agree it sounds quite peaceful being able to read and have a coffee without anyone around.

I’d be happy with any dog to be fair - bonus if I could take my own though 😁

This is how I imagine it. Sat reading all night and doing a half arsed hourly patrol 😂

I'd love to, but nights suck.

riotlady · 25/02/2024 20:20

My husband always says this would be his dream job, not very compatible with family life though!

like a pp I would hate it, I’m very jumpy and would be convinced there were ghosts/serial killers/massive spiders round every corner

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 25/02/2024 20:20

Husband used to do this in an abandoned abertroir in his 20's in Lincolnshire.

Used to have to chase off groups of kids and druggies and do hourly patrols of the whole facility.

Says it's one of the worst jobs he's ever had. Put on loads of weight from ordering midnight takeaways everyday.

Itscatsallthewaydown · 25/02/2024 20:22

Is your dog a cowardly Great Dane?

TaraSiligel · 25/02/2024 20:23

Yes me! I have always said being a night time security guard is my ideal job. All on my own, reading, thinking, planning… wandering around periodically… I didn’t realise I’d also get a dog - bonus!

bombastix · 25/02/2024 20:24

Yes I don't think I would have done it for an old abattoir.

I had a nice corporate building, just me, and all the shit machine coffee I could ever want.

Reugny · 25/02/2024 20:24

One of my brothers' did it while at university decades ago.

He said it was damn boring and he only got through it because he had to study.

I know other men who have done it. All said it was as boring as hell.

Great Danes are lovely, when I was born my grandmother's thought she was my mother and used to gently pick me up my my nappy and hide me if anyone came too close 😆

Unfortunately not but that would be the icing on the cake if I got a Great Dane. Thing is, even if it was cowardly, it’s still a massive dog and most people would think twice about pissing one off 😂

I did similar once but during the day - as a temp, sitting in an office in an empty building and answering about 4 phone calls. It was deathly dealthly dull.

Atlaswasafool · 25/02/2024 20:36

OMG I was just saying this to DH as we walked down Pall Mall last night!

So many posh buildings with just a single
man chilling in a big comfy chair scrolling on his phone.

I was envious!

I used to do OOH evenings at a solicitors, the other two women were really nice but the main thing I remember was a woman phoning going through a divorce wanting to leave a message for her solicitor but COMPLETELY drunk. I got the message written down and passed on but didn't mention alcohol. I always wondered how she was in the morning. It's not my job to judge and divorce is stressful.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 25/02/2024 20:50

Had a mate who did permanent nights for 5 years or so at an office near Covent Garden. He loved it!

Laiste · 25/02/2024 20:51

Oh <hand up> i've had 2 Grate Danes and they were both indeed cowardly 😂
