I’d love to be a night time security guard

You know the type that patrol old abandoned hospitals etc? I think it would be a great job, just wandering around all night with my dog.

Would you do it?

Great not grate 🙄😂

Oh <hand up> i've had 2 Grate Danes and they were both indeed cowardly 😂

Strange considering their size!

AffIt · 25/02/2024 20:53

This is my OH's dream post-retirement job.

He is currently a Very Serious International Lawyer type who has made friends with a lot of the nice older chaps who do the overnight concierge / security role in his office (as he's frequently there until stupid o' clock) and says it sounds brilliant.

I would like to be a train driver on a tourist route - maybe a steam engine? Not a proper train driver (that looks quite stressful), more a kind of hobby, toot-toot sort of a thing. I love trains. I work in IT.

SheepAndSword · 25/02/2024 20:59

@AffIt friend of mine works for heritage railways, loves it!

CringeQueen · 25/02/2024 20:59

No way, they always die first in horror movies.

Laiste · 25/02/2024 21:36

@SheepAndSword - i agree!

They would wuff at the door bell going, but if you went to answer it they would let you answer it alone! They might come and peer out from behind your legs nervously.

Wary of cats.
Hated the rain.
Gentle souls with other dogs.

I must say the one time i had an encounter with a dodgy bloke in the woods my boy did get in front of me and bare his teeth. It was all it took!
<proud>

Anyway - sorry OP! - no i'd be too scardy to be walking about in the dark with a torch. My imagination goes wild enough just going to the loo at night 😂

SpinsterUnlimited · 25/02/2024 22:26

Working nights really messed with my head. I hallucinated through lack of sleep when I did it in a care home.

I imagine as a security guard I'd be like the one who goes bonkers in the film.

FML why can't I think of the actor or the film???

Here's Jonny...

SpinsterUnlimited · 25/02/2024 22:26

Jack Nicholson

Jack Nicholson in the Shining.

Haven’t seen it in years though, I’m a total horror wuss.

Marchingforwards · 25/02/2024 22:28

Yes I’d like this job too if I had a fun colleague with me as well as a dog

Whatthefack · 25/02/2024 22:30

Having worked 12hr night shifts in the security industry for 4 years, no, never again.

I mean, I wasn't alone in an empty building, I was in a control room. But christ, when fuck all happens, 12 hrs is an eternity! The nights we were busy is what I craved, so I wasn't fighting to stay awake or clock watching.

Being in an empty building all night long with fuck all happening every single night 99.99% of the time... tedious beyond words.

SpinsterUnlimited · 25/02/2024 22:30

@Atlaswasafool The Shining. Thankyou. I could have googled but was trying to use my rusty brain 👵🏻

"Yikes...."

Zoinks as well! I got the reference 😅

BobbyBiscuits · 25/02/2024 22:36

My mate was one of those when he was about 18. At a Dog Racing Track. Sat in this crappy shed on a very dilapidated armchair and watched a microscopic black and white telly, while smoking copious weed. And sleeping. I hung out there with him a couple of times. Once the kitchen was left unlocked so we cooked loads of Kievs and croquettes in the deep fat fryer. Rock n' roll!
It was very, very dull, but nothing ever happened that was scary or anything bad. Just hours of boredom. It was really cold in the shed too, but you could technically hang out in the bar seating, though the bars themselves were (wisely in our case) locked.

Thanks for the opportunity to use movie trivia 😂

I’m terrible with song names but better at moviee.

Five nights at Freddies. That's all I will say.

😂😂😂😂😂

JMSA · 25/02/2024 22:42

Knowing my luck, I'd start working at the place a criminal gang had been staking out for years!

RhubarbGinForTheWin · 25/02/2024 22:57

If it's anything like my Great Dane, you would be clonked over the head before he'd even removed his nose from the slipper.

I’d love to be a night time security guard

Me too 😁

Although I do have to agree with the point about Great Danes, there's one near here that has his own field, and he stands on a mound in the field and watches people walk past. My terrier can be a shit and he woofed one day, tail wagging, I think trying to gain our attention, my terrier gave him a right gob full of attitude in return until I shut her up and he ran round the the house and in the door tail between his legs. Poor thing, he just wanted to say hello!

However to the point of the thread, I've done nights and doubled as the security in some places, no dog unfortunately though. I had cleaning to do but some nights were incredibly dull, long and nights are soul and life destroying for any length of time.

I did foil a burglary once, though they'd have gotten away with it if it weren't for this meddling kid 😜

Notthatcatagain · 25/02/2024 23:15

Just imagining how much knitting, crochet or embroidery I could get done with 12 uninterrupted hours. A nice walk with the dog every hour to counteract the junk food, night shift diet. The bed to myself in the day. Wonder if they would let me take the dog home in the morning

Soberthoughts · 25/02/2024 23:24

They should issue a small army of chihuahuas to night watchmen. They'd act as an effective burglar alarm and trespassers can't escape if their ankles have been mauled.

MrsApplepants · 25/02/2024 23:35

Yup, my chihuahua would be perfect as a night watchdog - everything and everyone pisses him off and when he’s scared off the intruders I could pop him back in my handbag. (Joking really, he’s very sweet and doesn’t travel in a handbag)

karma3 · 25/02/2024 23:50

Hell no. Have you seen FNAF
