Entitled Bus Wankers

Ihatebuswankers · 24/02/2024 17:50

Today I was going home with a sleeping toddler in a buggy, an older child aged 5 and loads of shopping. Got to the bus stop, no other buggies, waited 20 mins. Bus arrives, suddenly this couple with a buggy and baby in a sling appears from a way off, and due to where the driver stopped, managed to get on before me. I had been letting some elderly people on and then all of a sudden they were there. There was one buggy already on the bus and they took the last space. Luckily I managed to get on as I don’t think the driver noticed and I had to wedge myself my the door, 5 year old getting hit every time someone got off. In 6 years of having a buggy and not driving, I have never known a bus driver allow this!

As I got on, I said ‘Excuse me but I was at the bus stop before you, did you not see me?’ - they immediately got defensive, saying they had been travelling for hours and had a young baby, etc. In my opinion, it doesn’t matter, the person waiting at the bus stop first with a buggy, should get a space on the next bus due to limited spaces. They were so smug and entitled about it, saying ‘I really don’t understand the problem, we are all on the bus, why don’t you just let it go’ etc. Really patronising.

YABU - bus stops are a free for all and it just depends who the bus driver stops closest to

YANBU - they were entitled bus wankers and should have waited their turn.

Definitely entitled wankers! I have had this happen to me before well done for saying it! I always regret not. It’s super annoying when you miss out for being considerate of elderly too!

Ihatebuswankers · 24/02/2024 17:58

Thank you, I was so annoyed, both at their actions and their attitude 😭 usually I seethe in silence but I couldn’t hold it in today!

I’ve had this happened to me loads but then I’ve had 4 children so had a buggy for a long time, one pushed on in front of me and when I confronted her on it she said I should have been quicker? Not much I could do as like you said the bus stopped further down near her so she jumped on first. Other one waiting at the bus stop for ages and another bus came and woman with pram gets off and also starts waiting, my bus comes and as it pulls up and I get on the front she hopped on the back?! There was already one on so no room for me but I also stayed on and she didn’t even pay for the bus but driver didn’t seem to care and there was no way I was missing the bus so ended up having to stand in the aisle. Honestly happened to me so much I lost count but those are the 2 that annoyed me the most but ime people just see it as whoever can get on first and will often hop on the back so they get on quicker if you are closer to the bus stop.

Ofcourseshecan · 24/02/2024 18:06

I’m glad you confronted them. They’re still self-entitled wankers, but there’s just a chance they might try to avoid any embarrassment next time.

BobbyBiscuits · 24/02/2024 18:10

That sounds awful. How could they (the woman at least) not see another woman with children and baggage waiting long before they got there?

Some people simply don't care. Could be the day, could be they are a full time tosser. This lady in her 30s took up the 2 disabled seats on the bus the other day with her bags, no kids. Refused to move up one seat for my 84 y.o disabled Mum. The whole bus sighed. Of course another woman gave up her seat for my Mum. Other woman not bothered remotely by the shame.

Busses are a minefield. I'd say next time fully position yourself right where the bus stops, if anyone tries go ahead, firmly say, 'excuse me, there's a queue/ we were here first?' Before they get the chance to board. Not easy I know.

Since Covid it's more noticeable that people only care about themselves but I'm not sure your challenge did anything other than make you feel better

Yep sadly I got that impression too. They genuinely didn’t see what was wrong in their behaviour so I just seemed petty in their eyes 🤷‍♀️ I won’t bother next time.

Increasingly for many number of reasons starting from thatcher's individual and individualism which has escalated (not through Tory or thatchers fault ) into an almost cult of selfishness, they don't care. As evidenced by your example, but also through smaller actions- listening to loud tinny music on buses, taking a loud and public phone call, FaceTiming with people around you who don't want to be filmed. The cult of the self is at its height now. No one cares about anyone else . I'm alright jack is the mantra of the world.

You called?

DistingusedSocialCommentator · 24/02/2024 22:56

I agree OP

Thnakfully I don't do bueses etc and rarely out to the shops and avoid at all costs peak times where possible

I just hate queue jumpers.

you was lucky as most will have a proper go at you as they are real "wankers"

I disagree. It takes guts to challenge cretins like this. We don't challenge cretins like this as we have seen first hand how some of these types react.

IMO, OP did well and the passenger on the bus must have had a good larf at these entitled idiots.

LizFromMotherland · 24/02/2024 23:02

So what if the OP's challenge did just make her feel better? At least she did it.

Were there no seats on the bus for your DD, OP?

jeeners · 24/02/2024 23:09

It happens all the time in London, although generally there are at least 5 routes running at any one stop, so just because someone is waiting at the stop first you can't tell if they are going to get on that bus. I generally avoid the bus nowadays and its "space for 2 buggies but only if a wheelchair doesn't get on and other people aren't filling it up with luggage and the other buggy isn't a double or one of those huge tank prams" and just haul the buggy down the stairs to the tube where I can slide my buggy on wherever there's floor space.

😂

entitlement hopefully somewhere they feel a little bit of shame or regret, but even if they don't feel anything but smug, if its what you needed to do to feel a little better about the encounter then its good you did it.

StrawberrySquash · 24/02/2024 23:31

They were at fault. It can be tricky to keep track of people and who is first at a busy London stop with lots of routes, but this doesn't seem to be the case here.

Bus wankers is the wrong phrase though. Anyone on a bus is a bus wanker when you are 18 and driving your mum's car. These people were just wankers.

TotoroElla · 24/02/2024 23:39

Why didn't they just put their buggy down if baby was in a sling?

I've never understood this...why is someone a 'wanker' just because they are using a bus?

Treehuggingmutherfunkin · 24/02/2024 23:47

This is just people in general op. I'm a driver but I have seen people who won't give up their seat to old or pregnant or woman with kids. I always use to offer and then others would join like sheep. It's like some don't have a brain for themselves
Honestly glad I drive now

It's a joke. It's a quote from the Inbetweeners. They are teenage boys in the sixth form and one's just passed his test and has his mum's car to drive. So they are all feeling very cool and shout 'bus wankers' at their friends.

Obviously they are obnoxious but it's very funny. As a frequent bus user I'm happy to be a bus wanker although I try to avoid being a wanker, on and off buses.

DD wanted to stand with me as there were people in most of the seats sadly, she is a little bit shy of strangers. Oh and the two cretins took the two accessible seats near the buggies, obvs 😂😂

Shityshitybangbang · 25/02/2024 09:14

The bus driver should have told this couple to unfold their pram if the baby was in a sling. They wouldn’t have been struggling to do this as there were two of them. I used to find this really rude when I used to bus it!!
