news.sky.com/story/council-tax-how-much-is-yours-going-up-by-13076146

Mine is going up 4.99 percent. I am fed up of absorbing the costs of everything rising and rising. My wage is not getting that much better.

Just feels like we are getting poorer every day. Just fed up.

The public services are crumbling...

Schools are at a poor standard
Rubbish collection every 4 weeks (weekly recycling)
Roads are at poor standard with pole holes
Rubbish and fly tipping increased and over grown weed
Crime and theft of mobile phones increased
Library closes and pool under threat of closure

It's rubbish

GasPanic · 21/02/2024 10:08

I think pretty much everyones will go up by the maximum 5%.

A few councils I think have special permission to raise them more because they are bankrupt.

Think about all the extra costs councils have in terms of stuff like energy over the past few years. TBH I am surprised they are not all bust.

BoohooWoohoo · 21/02/2024 10:09

4.99% here too

Central government are giving councils less money too so local services are going to be even more awful.

GasPanic · 21/02/2024 10:11

Potholes is the one I am noticing.

Maybe it is the extra rain. But there sure are some massive holes in the roads developing.

Some are absolutely huge craters that make our suspension bang like crazy when you drive over them. I am looking to avoid them all the time atm. I have a pothole map in my head.

Beezknees · 21/02/2024 10:12

Yeah, 4.99% for me too. I'm band A and I get single person discount so I'm not sure exactly how much it works out in £s.

itstooearlytobeawake · 21/02/2024 10:16

4.99% here too. We're band B.
I also have a pot hole map in my head but have to add to it daily.

SlowlyLurking · 21/02/2024 10:19

Mine's raised but so has everything else except my wages. The only slight light is that my PIP will go up 6% in April but that's not enough to cover everything.

Dweetfidilove · 21/02/2024 10:22

5% here on a band D, following a 15% increase last year.

At this rate I’ll have to start selling my organs or other bits, because my income is barely , barely edging up 🤦🏾‍♀️.

midgetastic · 21/02/2024 10:25

Option 1 - don't fund things , pay private if you want anything - very expensive ( look at dentists ) but what the tories prefer

Option 2 - tax inheritance , tax wealth , tax high profits , pisses people off even though most people wouldn't be affected

Option 3 - whack up taxes on people already struggling- easy because they are too busy keeping going to object in a way that hurts the people who make the choices

Midnlghtrain · 21/02/2024 10:27

I loathe council tax - especially when I get the annual breakdown! I wish I could say where the money went and direct more to police / fire / ambulance / bloody pothole fixes rather than the majority going elsewhere 😂

Cyclebabble · 21/02/2024 10:35

Costs have risen and particularly adult social care is very expensive. I am not sure there is much alternative to raising taxes. This is I am afraid the hard truth.

Heatpumphero · 21/02/2024 10:40

Adult social care is expensive.
councils are supposed to tackle homelessness when there is a housing shortage.
Specialist schools have been reduced drastically to save money, meaning a lot of pupils need to go to private specialist schools with the council meeting the fees and transport costs.

surely it would be more cost effective to build more council housing and open more council run specialist schools (rather than pretending all kids can go to mainstream).

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 21/02/2024 10:49

4.99% here and we are band G so it’s already daylight robbery.

Option 2 please.

Yep. 5% here too. £350 a month now.

girlfriend44 · 21/02/2024 12:19

Why is there no money for anything?
Where's it gone?

Barrenfieldoffucks · 21/02/2024 12:20

It will be. Because the govt are squeezing local authorities every which way and leaving them to play the bad guy. 🤷

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 21/02/2024 12:22

No! Apparently not in Scotland- which is for many idiots a vote winner but in reality is bloody stupid!

MrsMurphyIWish · 21/02/2024 12:22

We have had a 4.99% rise every year for the past 5 years.

SuperGreens · 21/02/2024 12:23

The amount of tax we pay in the UK is utterly disgraceful for the services being offered. Frankly its just corruption, politicians lining theirs and their mates pockets as fast as they can.

mummabubs · 21/02/2024 12:26

Here in south Wales we're looking at a 16% increase next year, but also major savings needed so services will be cut. Definitely feels frustrating.

Mycatmyworld · 21/02/2024 12:29

Think ours will be just over 4% , bandA. but when the tax yr finishes I carry on paying so it does keep the DD lower. 23 yr I finished in October & have managed to pay 2 months ahead already.

SweetPetrichor · 21/02/2024 12:35

No, unfortunately they have frozen it here. I would rather pay more and see things have half a chance of being funded.

OhmygodDont · 21/02/2024 12:37

I don’t even want to look. Every year it goes up and up and up. Yet the streets look worse, the roads and paths get worse, the schools are crumbling away. Never see a Bobby on the beat. Bins are always overflowing because any tiny reason they won’t empty them.

Can’t fault the fire brigade only service that seems to be working.
