To ask if high blood pressure is a reason for A&E

BP 160 over 100 high enough for a&e? More or less. It was higher. Now is about 157 over 95. In my 30s. No underlaying conditions. Bad headache. since about 5am this morning. Is it bad?

have you had readings before, i assume you do which is why you have a machine?

TheShellBeach · 17/02/2024 19:22

No, in the absence of other symptoms.
Maybe make a GP appointment.

Snowpatrolling · 17/02/2024 19:23

Not a&e but drs on Monday.
mine is normally higher than that (hence I’m on blood pressure meds! 🤦‍♀️)
cut out caffeine and sugary food for the weekend, see if that helps. If you’re under stress also another reason it could be higher

thatneverhappened · 17/02/2024 19:23

How bad is your headache? Fellow high blood pressure sufferer. I'd 100% go to A&E with a really severe headache that didn't respond to migraine meds or chest pain but bp alone it's not a reason by itself to go. Have you ever had a 24h monitor? I get a few times a day where mine spikes to those levels- its the 24h average they really worry about

TheShellBeach · 17/02/2024 19:23

Why were you taking your BP anyway?

thatneverhappened · 17/02/2024 19:24

You know how you feel though

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 17/02/2024 19:24

Assuming you have taken pain relief for the headache?

It’s a GP or practice nurse appointment, not A&E.

fourelementary · 17/02/2024 19:25

Nope not at that level

TheShellBeach · 17/02/2024 19:25

Do you suffer with health anxiety?

RosesAndHellebores · 17/02/2024 19:27

Ring 111

Thisisnotmyid · 17/02/2024 19:27

Not unless you have an absolute blinding headache and you have taken an average of 3 readings and it’s getting higher. Mine is higher than that generally and I’m 34 without any other health issues. Hypertension is more common than you think in people on their 30’s and a headache is actually a common symptom.

Try some pain relief, hydration and take another reading when you’re relaxed, sitting down with your legs uncrossed and see if it comes down. If not make a GP appt on Monday

OhcantthInkofaname · 17/02/2024 19:27

BP goes up with pain. So that could be the reason for the high reading.

UltramarineViolet · 17/02/2024 19:27

In absence of any symptoms I would go to GP on Monday

If you've been checking it constantly all day there is likely to be an element of anxiety which is making it appear worse than it actually is

TheShellBeach · 17/02/2024 19:27

Ring 111

Just wasting resources.

Willmafrockfit · 17/02/2024 19:28

i think dialing 111 would be better than asking randoms here personally.
or look at nhs website.

They'd ring her back in ten hours and tell her to see her GP.

willingtolearn · 17/02/2024 19:32

My BP was recorded at 180/111 at a GP consultation (not for BP)

I was sent away to record it for a week before any decision would be made

DragonGypsyDoris · 17/02/2024 19:40

Absolutely not unless there is something you're not telling us. Relax, stay calm, stop taking your BP, don't Google anything, enjoy your weekend.

skybluekitty · 17/02/2024 19:42

Is your username an indication of how you are generally? Or a response to the high BP?

Either way, why and how are you taking your BP in the first place? I wouldn't go to A&E for that, but maybe GP on Monday?

Unless there is something you haven't mentioned like pregnancy etc

KezzabellaB · 17/02/2024 19:43

I was sent to A&E for high BP but tbf mine was 250 over something 😳

TriceratopsRocks · 17/02/2024 19:44

Agree with others - make a GP appointment. Although that is quite a high reading, it's not that high, and worrying about it can definitely make it worse.

ScaredAndPanicky · 17/02/2024 19:48

I hope not as I'm taking my BP over a week for the gp and it's been higher than that a few times. I put it down to stress (see user name). But I guess it depends how bad the headache is and if nothing will shift it.

Summerbay23 · 17/02/2024 19:49

I’ve also had high bp (above that level) GP made me take readings for a week and then eventually I went on blood pressure tablets. I’d probably just make an appointment with your GP as soon as you can.

RantyAnty · 17/02/2024 19:51

Do you have health anxiety or general anxiety?

How much water have you had today?

That isn't high enough to go to ae, besides home blood pressure monitors are seldom accurate

make an appointment with your GP and they will put a monitor on you to wear for 24 hours to see if you really have high pressure or not
