BP 160 over 100 high enough for a&e? More or less. It was higher. Now is about 157 over 95. In my 30s. No underlaying conditions. Bad headache. since about 5am this morning. Is it bad?

I'd call 111 or make a gp appointment for tomorrow.

newlaptop12 · 17/02/2024 19:54

No.

Pain puts your bp up, don't check it if you are in pain.

AnxietyLevelMax · 17/02/2024 19:59

Thank you all. Gp it is then.

That’s high but not emergency high in the absence of other issues/symptoms.

Why are you taking your BP? Do you have hypertension or other health issues?

Spookymormonhelldream · 17/02/2024 20:09

How/why are you checking your blood pressure?
Have you taken any pain relief?
Have you had coffee/anything with caffeine?

TheShellBeach · 17/02/2024 20:37

Why did you take it in the first place?

Mariposistaaa · 17/02/2024 21:12

I was in a similar position when I was incredibly stressed after my gran’s death. Permanent headache for weeks on end and very high BP. Given my young age and good physical fitness the GP just monitored me over a few months and offered support, avoiding medication u less absolutely necessary.

Thank you all. Gp it is then.

Practice nurse if your blood pressure is still high when you're not in pain.

GP if persistent headache, not for a one-off generally.

Ophy83 · 17/02/2024 21:13

A hypertensive crisis is 180/120 or higher. If that happens seek urgent help. Otherwise you have a long uncomfortable wait in A&E. If you're really worried call 111, oherwise see your GP on Monday

m00rfarm · 17/02/2024 21:13

I make an appointment when mine is 200/100 for more than a day. I am on meds though.

TheChosenTwo · 17/02/2024 21:15

Is your only symptom a headache? We have a BP monitor in the house because dh was told to take readings daily, other than that it’s never been used.
Why were you checking your BP?

KnowledgeableMomma · 17/02/2024 21:17

Our hospital ( in US should that make a difference) states 180/120 or higher should be seen in ER or lower with symptoms of headaches and/or stroke. With the headache and your earlier BP, our policy would be to take you to ER/A&E.

TheShellBeach · 17/02/2024 21:17

Have you got health anxiety?

MorningSunshineSparkles · 17/02/2024 21:31

Please don’t be daft enough to take medical advice from strangers over the internet, phone NHS24 if you’ve still got the headache present.

coloursquare · 17/02/2024 21:52

Have you taken a few readings OP? Spikes are common. But I would ring 111

TiaraBoo · 17/02/2024 23:06

I called 111 when my BP was higher than that (had submitted BP reading to GP and that’s what it suggested if you had ~170/110 - can’t remember the exact number). They called me back in the middle of the night and said see the GP.

ApisGuard · 17/02/2024 23:21

A blood pressure of 160 over 100 is considered high, especially if it's sustained over time. Given your symptoms of a bad headache and the elevated blood pressure, it's worth seeking medical attention. @AnxietyLevelMax

XenoBitch · 17/02/2024 23:29

Not A&E, but certainly see your GP if it keeps being that high when you do a home reading.

I had mine taken by my GP, and it was 190/130 ish. I was sent home with a monitor for a week. I have a serious case of White Coat Syndrome, and even taking it at home for the first few times, it was crazy high. My mum is the same. Her BP goes up when she has to even consider taking her BP.
My averages were normal though... but I do need to lose weight and eat better.
