Is this right for a baby in nursery?!

First time mum so have no idea if this is normal or not. I have a 14 month old. She is in a room with 1 year olds to 20 month olds. They are all walking, she is not, though she can stand on her own. Ive been told that she will go outside to the lawn/decking area with them all at lunchtime… I am not ok with this as she is crawling still?! Am I being over the top about this or is this a bit grim? Id rather she went outside when she can actually walk.

It's not "grim" for your child to go outside! Do you take them to the park to crawl around? It's the same thing.

Nurseryimumma · 15/02/2024 21:37

@10ThousandSpoons no never! We go to the park but in the pram or me holding her walking but I would never let her crawl along pavements and grass etc?! Is that weird?

A bit of dirt from crawling around won't hurt unless outside is covered in dog shit.

So shes 14m so last summer didn't roll around on the grass or crawl outside, garden, park or similar? How sad for her.

PFB?

Nurseryimumma · 15/02/2024 21:39

@HolidayPrepIsStressful yes first one 😳 I was just surprised she would be outside crawling hands on ground etc, seems pretty grim to me but I wanted other people’s views so obviously I am being precious!

We take all our babies outside daily. The crawling ones we usually put into all in ones so they don't get wet or cold when they crawl. The smaller ones go on mats to stay dry.

greenmarsupial · 15/02/2024 21:39

Definitely OTT. Outside time is an important part of nursery. It's not going to be 'dirty' mud like a park with dogs could be. She will get much more from being with her peers than if they put her with the younger non-walkers.

GrazingSheep · 15/02/2024 21:39

Mine crawled outdoors all the time.

Stressfordays · 15/02/2024 21:40

Very normal to let babies crawl outside, nursery or not.

Yes. Find a dog poo free bit of grass and let your child feel it!

Let them get muddy.

If everyone else is walking it might help motivate her to keep trying.

UpUpUpU · 15/02/2024 21:40

Mine sat in and dug mud with his bare hands! How do you think they develop immunity, explore and have a good time!

Get your baby outside and relax!

husbandcallsmepickle · 15/02/2024 21:41

Totally normal for babies of all ages to go outside, ideally on a daily basis

Applespies23 · 15/02/2024 21:41

My baby went outside at nursery from about 10 months old! They just sat them on a mat or blanket outside. It's fine.

LittleBearPad · 15/02/2024 21:41

Do you never sit down on the grass outside?

It’s not grim. They’ll wash her hands before she eats.

Nurseryimumma · 15/02/2024 21:42

Ok thanks for the perspective!

my worry was her eating dirt/poo/mud etc as her hands would be on the ground crawling.

Yeah that is weird. Your child obviously needs to experience the outside 🤯

Nurseryimumma · 15/02/2024 21:42

@eatsleepfarmrepeat my child does experience outside.’

no need to be nasty.

Your baby has never crawled outside or sat on the grass?! That’s ridiculous. Of course they should go outside with the others.

Poor kid. And there won’t be poo in a nursery garden… dirt is healthy, no wonder all kids have allergies and get ill all the time

bryceQ · 15/02/2024 21:44

Definitely normal for 14 month olds to be on grass! A bit of mud is good for her immune system. It's important for gut health.

PuttingDownRoots · 15/02/2024 21:44

Even when walking, toddlers will spend a lit of time with their hands on the ground... playing with mud, climbing, just sitting down, playground equipment...

She’s going to be outside in a childcare setting. What on earth could you possibly think is out there that is so “grim”. I honestly despair sometimes

Your dc is 14mo - you really must give her opportunities to explore outdoors by now, it's good for development and the immune system. Get a full body puddlesuit.

Hasn't your dd ever played in an outdoor playground yet? Eg on baby swings

There won't be poo on the ground at nursery?

Maybe ask them for a tour of the outside?

Nurseryimumma · 15/02/2024 21:46

People keep saying get a puddle suit… yes I will when she’s walking?! My point is she’s still crawling so literally her hands will be all over the ground?

DD has been at nursery since 7 months. They've always been outside everyday. All in one plus play socks from amazon until they're in shoes
