Are there any lipsticks that stay on?

Z0rr0 · 14/02/2024 10:14

I've never met a lipstick that stayed on my lips longer than 20 minutes. Maybe I've got weird lips. But the instant I take a drink or eat something it's gone. I pretty much never bother now.
Do you have a go to lipstick that has longevity? Are my lips weird?
Am I doing lipstick wrong?
I once tried a staining lipstick (or something like that, can't remember the name) and it just really dried my lips out and felt awful.
Sorry, AIBU for traffic, but I'd love to have one nice lipstick that stays on. (I tend to do berry / light burgundy not red, and I don't do glossy.)
Thanks.

Tarte are my go to. They do moisturising matte ones.

ScottyDoesntKnow · 14/02/2024 10:16

It can about how you apply. When I wore lipstick regularly, I would exfoliate and moisturise my lips. Let that settle while I do other makeup, then apply lip primer (MAC). Then lipliner and finally the lipstick on top. Blot and reapply. Usually that would last me through the day.

ScottyDoesntKnow · 14/02/2024 10:16

And those were MAC lipsticks and liners too.

I've been loving the rare beauty lip oils (my favourite is the shade ‘delight’. It’s basically a lipstick with a moisturising oil, and once the oil goes you’re left with a really lovely stain that lasts all day. And I mean all day without it smudging, or having to worry about it being uneven. I’ve eaten and drunk, gone 6+ hours and it still looks as good as when I first put it on. If you worry about drying, I always put a layer of lip balm on top to keep my lips moisturised and it doesn’t affect the pigment or lipstick at all.

Do you line your lips and blot?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 14/02/2024 10:38

I've always used Max Factor Lipfinity. In the mornings I brush my teeth, put some lip balm on, potter about for 10 mins then put the lippy on. I wipe off the the excess lip balm first. Let it fully dry, then put the clear stuff over the top. Stays on all day unless I eat something very oily and then it tends to come off slightly. I don't tend to have to touch it up at all.

I religiously put lip balm on every night when I go to bed. My lips never feel dry.

Maybelline superstay Matt ink lipstick.

Stays on all day! It’s brilliant. Quite often I can’t actually remove it.

Maybelline Superstay lipsticks stay on your lips for a million years. However, the liquid one (the one you apply with a brush) can be quite drying. But I hear the crayon version is not as drying.

I love these.

To get them off though, I have to apply a good amount of lipsalve (I use Palmer's cocoa butter one), give it 30 seconds, wipe off, and repeat.

It's usually gone after three goes! But it's a testament to it's staying power.

phoenixrosehere · 14/02/2024 10:58

I use/love lip stains and depending on the texture, I either brush my lips with a toothbrush, apply, and add balm, moisturising gloss (with the thin liquid ones) or apply straight (the gel-texture ones).

The gel-texture one are typically more moisturising imo.

All of mine are from Korean brands, Romand, Etude House, The Saem, because they’re very long lasting and inexpensive (between £3-£7 online). Some a bit too long lasting that you have to wait for them to fade away even after some exfoliation, but I don’t mind that.

I swear by Stila stay all day lipstick. Apply it and blot, then cover with a layer of lipcote. It lasts all day long even after eating and drinking!

Z0rr0 · 14/02/2024 14:57

@ScottyDoesntKnow Thanks. Maybe I should look at a primer.

@AlexandraJJ If I'm doing it properly I do, then the liner stays but the lipstick is still gone in no time.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. I do use lip balm at night and also before applying makeup.
I will check out some of your ideas and see what happens.
Appreciate your responses and advice.

@phoenixrosehere what do you recommend for Etude House, their watertints don't last on me.

Sparkletastic · 14/02/2024 15:53

Lisa Eldridge and MAC matte lipsticks stay the course with lipliner / 1st application / blot / 2nd application method

Toottooot · 14/02/2024 15:54

Whatever Taylor Swift wears! Soz dinna ken fit she uses tho.

SummaLuvin · 14/02/2024 15:57

Matte finish lipsticks are often long lasting, MAC are brilliant but many brands have their own versions. Agree with PP you need to soften and exfoliate before applying and do this in thin layers, blotting in between, this will help it look good and last.

But the instant I take a drink or eat something it's gone.
Eating and drinking to an extent should be fine, however, when you consider most long lasting make-up is oil soluble and the cleansers are oil based, if you are eating greasy food that with get on your lips like burger and chips or even a salad with oil vinaigrette then you have to expect some wearing off.

it just really dried my lips out and felt awful.
matte and long lasting lipsticks tend work by drying down and can be less comfortable, it's the trade off. Satin or gloss finish are more easy to wear but smudge and come off more easily.

newtb · 14/02/2024 15:59

Use lipcote. It's liké a clear varnish you put on over lipstick and protects it.

That Maybelline Super Stay is going nowhere without much effort.

mitogoshi · 14/02/2024 16:03

Lipfinity lasts 8 hours +

maddening · 14/02/2024 16:04

Maybeline 24 hours stays on

@phoenixrosehere what do you recommend for Etude House, their watertints don't last on me.

I use the Dear Darling Tint. It’s a bit thicker (like a thin gloss) than the water tints and starts with a glossy finish upon application but dries down and leaves a tint. I think it’s one of theirs that is buildable. I don’t find it to be drying, but there is the option of applying balm without colour deposit. When they do fade, it’s not patchy which is good, more of a natural flush if that makes sense.

I think the texture probably helps them adhere to the lips better and as it dries it sinks into the skin.

I had the watertints years ago and usually needed to do maybe 2-3 layers to get the saturation I wanted and the moment I started drinking water, it would come off. I had to apply a layer of balm to seal in the colour.
