To want to chat about my obsession for homes in rightmove

MsScoot · 13/02/2024 23:24

When I get some time to relax, one thing I like to do is look at homes on rightmove. I hardly watch tv or play computer games: so it’s my mindless guilty pleasure.

the things I love to see are:
kitchens with range cookers, an island, dining area and sitting area.
playrooms
lived in homes with pictures on the wall, books, paintings, records.’

i dont like super modern houses with vast space and gleaming surfaces.

what about you?

There used to be regular threads about property porn, or asking what is your lottery win house, great stuff. I like that you can now virtually around the house, rather than just look at pictures. I love when a local house goes up for sale and you sort of know who the owners are, it's often surprising what decor they've gone for.

RandomPoster456 · 13/02/2024 23:28

This is equally a guilty pleasure of mine. I also like looking at neighbouring houses in the area that are the same style of build as my own. Just to see how they have everything laid out etc. I am aware of how very sad I am. 😂😂

MsScoot · 13/02/2024 23:30

I get very upset when there isn’t a floor plan. I like to look at the layout and imagine how I would use each room.

Rightmove is just the gateway! I also go around some of the other property sites

ChaosTrulyReigns · 13/02/2024 23:34

I'm similar to you @MsScoot in what I like to see.

But my favourite bit is snurking at the posey EA photography of something like a butterdish, hand soap or a jar of Fleurs.

Feck orf with you trying to sell my a Life Style, I want to see every bedroom and bathroom and have all the photos labelled properly.

It's not a lot to ask.

When I rule the world there'll be no wanky photography and lyrical prose on details.

There is a special place in hell for estate agents. Absolute wankery for start to finish.

A good floor plan, photos of every room, labelled, and a non-wanky, accurate description. We aren’t stupid - there’s no point trying to roll it in glitter if it’s a shithole. Just market it sensibly.

I really enjoy spotting buggered up floorplans though. When there’s a room with no doors into it. Oh joy!

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 13/02/2024 23:45

The floor plan's the best bit! I love a really generous utility room that can be used as a boot room, a nice big kitchen diner and a big garden. Bonus points for hidden space for vegetables so that I can enjoy my Good Life fantasy. My husband thinks I am insane

WithIcePlease · 13/02/2024 23:47

I love looking at the houses on Shetland. Not particularly fancy houses but all that sea and space. I sometimes look at remote areas of Canada or Alaska too. And other places 😂
It's ridiculous as I would never contemplate a house without a shop or a pub within 10 minutes walking distance.

CurrentHun · 14/02/2024 05:58

Theres a whole load of specialist estate agents depending on what you like .. urban spaces for London lofts, Inigo for historical anywhere or just the posh ones, Savills, strutt and Parker, Knight Frank . I like seeing what there is but then end up feeling a bit sad I don’t have 4million quid spare so I’m not sure it’s entirely healthy as a hobby but there we are.

ArrestHer · 14/02/2024 06:34

Ahhh. I stopped looking since I bought our house. Maybe I should take it up again, but only looking at properties that are out of reach.

i hate a modern mansion, but give me a grade 2 listed stately home that would cost a fortune to heat and maintain, decorated in a broadly traditional style, and I’m yours.

LindorDoubleChoc · 14/02/2024 06:49

I enjoy my visits to the Modern House website. I can but dream!

Waytogoidaho · 14/02/2024 07:00

Guilty as charged, I too waste countless hours scrolling through RM, to the point that DH says I should become an estate agent! I like looking at floor plans & working out which walls I’d knock down. Give me a do-er upper every time

Zanatdy · 14/02/2024 07:03

I hate going on there as I’m trying to buy some where in the south east on one salary and it’s hard because what I can afford and what I want are 2 different things. Then I stray to looking up north, town I grew up in or towns I think might be near where my DD could go to Uni in 2yrs! But before I was looking I also enjoyed looking at peoples houses, especially ones near me that are in the million pound plus bracket

GrimDamnFanjo · 14/02/2024 07:04

It could be a lot worse.
You could be looking on rm then recreating the houses for your Sims to live in...

NamechangedH · 14/02/2024 07:04

MsScoot · 13/02/2024 23:34

Ooh.. what other sites?

Inigo.com I love the houses they sell!

takealettermsjones · 14/02/2024 07:07

I do this too. I love a second living room and an interesting garden (big, sure, but if it's just one big rectangle it's a snooze fest).

I always wonder how the hell Jack and Jill ensuites work though? Can the other person just barge in while you're in there? If you lock it what if you forget to unlock the other person's side when you leave?

WolfFoxHare · 14/02/2024 07:10

I love looking at floor plans on Rightmove. I find it so weird and annoying that real estate websites in other countries often don’t include a floor plan! How can you get a feel for the house just from photos of the rooms when they can be so deceptive?

SurelySmartie · 14/02/2024 07:12

Oh yes Knight Frank is another world.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 14/02/2024 07:22

I love houses that are decorated in an interesting way. Colour, textiles etc. When a Victorian house has been lived in rather than extended with a glass box and painted white or grey.

Anonymouslyposting · 14/02/2024 08:32

Basically everything on Inigo.

Fully agree floorplans are a must, then I plan fantasy extensions and renovations (because the £8m house I’m lusting over obviously isn’t good enough as is)

abesnt · 14/02/2024 08:38

Same.

Although I hate it when the show zoomed in photos of flowers in a vase or a fruit bowl. Pointless as that will be gone with the owners anyway.

mumda · 14/02/2024 09:07

Open front door picture usually means a posh house.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 14/02/2024 09:18

I spend a lot of time on modern house, I found out about it from mumsnet. And Inigo of course. I love both sites soooo much.
I get what you are saying about floorplans. I sometimes rearrange the space, put the kitchen in the hallway, sort of canal boat style, and create a shower room and delete the bathroom. I mentally moved into one such flat in a victorian building in Central London with an imaginary older cat.
It was a great imaginary flat.

ViciousCurrentBun · 14/02/2024 09:18

I look at rightmove, we are relocating when DH retires in about 2 years. I have actually found a perfect house for us just a few days ago and I look at the site every couple of weeks. I am trying to persuade him to consider moving now but it would add an hours commute though he can WFH often.

It’s an L shaped old cottage that’s has beams but has high ceilings, a garden all the way round of a quarter of an acre on a hill so the woods behind cannot be developed on. Space for a campervan, a garage and workshop for the tinkering he is planning and an amazing view across a valley. It’s also only 15 mins to the town I really like and 15 mins other way to where DS is hoping to settle and already works. I wish I hadn’t seen it.
