To want to chat about my obsession for homes in rightmove

MsScoot · 13/02/2024 23:24

When I get some time to relax, one thing I like to do is look at homes on rightmove. I hardly watch tv or play computer games: so it’s my mindless guilty pleasure.

the things I love to see are:
kitchens with range cookers, an island, dining area and sitting area.
playrooms
lived in homes with pictures on the wall, books, paintings, records.’

i dont like super modern houses with vast space and gleaming surfaces.

what about you?

I like doing this too, though I never look at floorplans, as I have zero spatial awareness and they don't really mean much to me or help me visualise the space! I also have real trouble imagining rooms or houses differently from how they currently are, so wouldn't be any good at thinking about extensions etc!

I like airy, spacious interiors with muted colours. A bit minimalist, but softly, not clinically or harshly.

BelindaOkra · 14/02/2024 09:28

Oh this is my downtime too. We have a friend living with us long term so I always check out the annexe situation for him.

And then I look at swimming pools.

I get upset with no floor plans or ones that are so fuzzy you can’t see anything.

I can’t afford any of this in RL obviously!

EveryOtherNameTaken · 14/02/2024 09:30

I get upset with no floorplan. And I like when the compass is on the floorplan so I can see what direction windows are facing.

Roselilly36 · 14/02/2024 09:31

Live my life on RM, love it, always, always looking at properties.

I do this too. I love a second living room and an interesting garden (big, sure, but if it's just one big rectangle it's a snooze fest).

I always wonder how the hell Jack and Jill ensuites work though? Can the other person just barge in while you're in there? If you lock it what if you forget to unlock the other person's side when you leave?

I have spent SO much time asking myself the same questions about Jack and hill bathrooms! My dream house would have a top floor with two bedrooms for my pre teens and a Jack and Jill bathroom. But so many logistical questions about how they work!!

Mumof2NDers · 14/02/2024 09:33

I’ve stopped looking. I’ve seen 2 dream houses that have sold before I’ve managed to save (£5 a week) the £500k they’re asking. Absolute bastards!!

I too am a serial Right Move watcher , but now that we are actively house hunting I’m finding so many things that really annoy me and are not helpful! The biggest one being wide angle lens shots which make everywhere look huge. We viewed one house where I walked into one room and thought what’s this , I don’t remember seeing this room online only to realise that it was actually the living room which was in real life tiny !
I also have no idea what use estate agents are, this one literally said little more than this is the kitchen, downstairs loo etc and sent us upstairs in our own . Yet couldn’t tell me where the garden boundary was and who owned the large trees there. She was driving a Tesla with a personal number plate, I think I’m in the wrong job!
Another one literally just opened the door to a steady stream of viewers who were to just look around on their own . She spent her time on the phone to her daughter who might have shingles, and asking about our car. Did absolutely nothing else.

I'm similar to you @MsScoot in what I like to see.

But my favourite bit is snurking at the posey EA photography of something like a butterdish, hand soap or a jar of Fleurs.

Feck orf with you trying to sell my a Life Style, I want to see every bedroom and bathroom and have all the photos labelled properly.

It's not a lot to ask.

When I rule the world there'll be no wanky photography and lyrical prose on details.

Yeah, what’s the point in that? I’m not buying your bayliss and Harding hand soap. So don’t need to see it.

my friends went to view a house and said that the owner left lots of designer things like Chanel handbags lying about

I finally found the perfect house two days ago. Within commutable distance to work, or any potential future work, near family but not too close, has a large garden, five bedrooms, in a valley, surrounded by land (that can't be built on!), not on a main road, and within a short walking distance to a town but not in a town. Most importantly though, within budget.

I look at Rightmove every day. I absolutely love it. Oh, and I also get really annoyed when they don't provide a floor plan 😂

CranfordScones · 14/02/2024 10:12

Anyone else remember pre-internet when the equivalent was looking at the property ads in Country Life, an activity which, for me, took place solely in the dentist's waiting room? It was like looking in to another world. I used to wonder who else, apart from dentists, actually bought Country Life - presumably some people with a property fixation. Now you can see it all online, for free. What a time to be alive...

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 14/02/2024 10:31

I know I love the Internet. Wasn't it invented by a British chap Tim Berners-Lee who credited his mum for his work and ideas! To be fair she was a professor of computing or some such.

I agree. Always look at the size of the Tv to give you an idea of how much the photos have been stretched.

Sahara123 · 14/02/2024 10:40

Good idea !

Wintersgirl · 14/02/2024 10:46

Me too, I love Rightmove! I've looked at On the Market but the pop ups drive me insane so I don't bother. I usually look at RM at the end of each day and see what properties have been added in my county in the last 24 hours.
I am addicted...

Wintersgirl · 14/02/2024 10:49

This reminded me that I made an entire thread on MN about annoying Estate Agents listings, about a year ago I think..

ArrestHer · 14/02/2024 11:08

I was told to count the cupboards in the kitchen too. Tells you about the actual size rather than the misleading image!

Vitriolinsanity · 14/02/2024 16:42

I could have prices and floor plans of houses in certain local areas as my Mastermind specialist subject.

Hellohah · 14/02/2024 16:45

I follow a TikTok page with videos of small American towns. If I see a new town, I then go on Zillow and fawn over the houses there.

I am most in awe of houses near water or in the mountains.

I remember a colleague was about to put her house on the market. I was like “well.. with it being in Stob road, and 5 bed, 2 bath… and new kitchen… yeah it’ll be around £340k. She thought it was hilarious that I was spot on
