Car insurance- how is this increase possible?!

Context-
40 year old female
Held a clean license for 21 years
NEVER claimed on car insurance (have the maximum NCB)
Car valued at £7k
Parked in drive during the day.
No other named drivers.
Fully comp.

With the AA last year my premium was £297, paid annually.
My auto renew option came today- no changes other than me/the car being a year older and another year of NCB.....
Quoted premium this year....£502.

What on earth is driving (excuse the pun!) this horrendous price hike?

Obviously I've just had a quick look elsewhere and can get id down to £400 ish but, still. Bloody hell!

Mine only went up around £20 (RAC) with breakdown as well
however the house insurance more than doubled 😡 for no reason at all, tried to ring them and the automated system said “that’s our quote and we do/will not change it” bastards , they got binned

CombatBarbie · 12/02/2024 16:53

Last year 430, this year's quote £833.....i don't think so!! Over 20yrs no claims, no accidents.

doris9034 · 12/02/2024 16:53

Mines the same - gone from £230 to over £500!!! Manager to get it for about £460 with a different provider - which is still double last year and no change in circs (in fact i drive far less now than i did then!)

minsmum · 12/02/2024 17:17

Just got mine gone up from 235 to 395

filingpapers · 12/02/2024 17:23

I'm afraid I haven't had time to read the whole thread so I don't know if anyone has suggested this.

My price went down after I put one of my adult children on the insurance.

Boomer55 · 12/02/2024 17:25

All insurances have gone up, and due to go up still further this year.🙁

CormorantStrikesBack · 12/02/2024 17:29

I do think driving will be a luxurious in a few years time, not just the cost of insurance but the cost of cars is shooting up.

JennyMatrix · 12/02/2024 17:36

Last year was £321. I then passed my IAM test and didn't tell my insurance company. My auto renewal quote was £550. I had a look on meerkat mentioning my IAM qualification and got my insurance down to £275!

dottypotter · 12/02/2024 17:38

Everything goes up, the house insurance and car insurance, and the road tax it's scary.

Littlebitpsycho · 12/02/2024 17:51

I must be the odd one out here. Sheila's Wheels emailed me the other day to tell me they can't provide me with a renewal quote for the coming year (never claimed in 15 years with a license)

Was paying £60 a month for a Mercedes ML320 4x4

Pleasantly surprised to get a quote from Esure for only £37 a month 🤷‍♀️ no contest, glad Sheila's wheels didn't quote 🤣

Just feel grateful you don’t have a Range Rover . Refused insurance by 5 companies then £5000 excess for others . In London can’t get them insured at all .All because of crime increases . Thefts and cost of parts as well have made them uninsurable , nothing to do with claims history . Plus the sales price has dropped through the floor .

If people believe that it isn't pure greedy profiteering then they want their heads tested 😂
I do beauty and I had a client this morning a lady in her 60s who was telling me about hers. never had an accident been driving for 30+ years and has a little vw polo. they've put hers up from £500 to £1500 . She's a pensioner it's disgusting

They do it cos they can . Pure and simple. If we want to drive we have to be insured

The result is more people will choose to drive illegally which will cause all sorts of problems . I already know someone who does it (I don't condone this of course)

This is not totally true .All the figures are worked out by actuaries and they know the customers can shop around . Thefts are up , cost of replacing parts is up , garage repair costs up and they look at every postcode in detail . Plus as car prices up to replace them if stolen is up as well . We are very about ours and are considering selling the car but won’t get much for it now . All because they are too easy to steal , bung some plates on and get out of the country .

We are way overdue for an enquiry into insurance company practices.

Amba1998 · 12/02/2024 18:38

£400 to £850 over here

C1N1C · 12/02/2024 18:54

When mine hiked up they told me it was because lots of people were driving after 'not' driving during covid.

Funny how it stayed up...

Be good if they looked at 2020 mileage and didn't penalise essential workers who went out to work throughout.

Georgyporky · 12/02/2024 19:21

Shop around, there are plenty of comparison sites.

I've had a different insurer every year for at least 15 years - but a lot of them are alternating !

Esure and Sheila's Wheels are actually the same company. Presumably they're "refocusing the demographics" of each brand or something.

Are you kidding? Insurance companies are permanently under scrutiny from the FCA.
