Car insurance- how is this increase possible?!

forjustnow · 12/02/2024 11:36

Context-
40 year old female
Held a clean license for 21 years
NEVER claimed on car insurance (have the maximum NCB)
Car valued at £7k
Parked in drive during the day.
No other named drivers.
Fully comp.

With the AA last year my premium was £297, paid annually.
My auto renew option came today- no changes other than me/the car being a year older and another year of NCB.....
Quoted premium this year....£502.

What on earth is driving (excuse the pun!) this horrendous price hike?

Obviously I've just had a quick look elsewhere and can get id down to £400 ish but, still. Bloody hell!

the car insurance industry made massive losses last year, hence premium rise for everybody this year

Are EV drivers being subsidised by other drivers then? If so, that's not right!

Guess the problem is you might hit an EV and cause damage to it and if it’s your fault your insurance company pays.

CormorantStrikesBack · 12/02/2024 15:22

Dd is 22yo with only one years ncb. Hers didn’t go up when we renewed in Dec. I mean it didn’t go down either and in the past as a young, new driver it would go down every year.

mitogoshi · 12/02/2024 15:23

I was dreading my renewal but it was only £30 up, I think it varies so much around the country

Pintally · 12/02/2024 15:23

I was starting to worry about mine after hearing some friends horror stories of increasing from 400 to 600 etc.

But mine was fine once again. Last time was around £250, I think I ended up paying around the same amount.

context - female, mid 30’s, clean licence, fully comp

mitogoshi · 12/02/2024 15:24

Should say was £269 in the end, 6 year old mid sized car

mirror245 · 12/02/2024 15:25

Can you add another driver. That can bring the price down, even if they never driver the car.

ZenNudist · 12/02/2024 15:28

Onceuponaheartache · 12/02/2024 12:49

Be grateful.

16 years no claims and mine has gone from £460 to £800 in the space of a year. Smae car as last years policy. Nothing changed etc.

All they could tell me was the price of paint has gone up.

I'm in same boat.

gerteddy · 12/02/2024 15:29

I've got 18yrs no claims and mine used to be less than £200 per year. Last yr it crept up to £258 and recent renewal was £447. I cldnt get it down much more with comparison sites called them up and they brought it down to £420.

Martin Lewis said they've gone up about 61% from last yr ☹️

The prices of cars, parts/ labour have sky rocketed and then their own staff will all be getting pay rises as well as general bills have gone up for companies too. It does seem ridiculously high though I agree.

CharlotteBog · 12/02/2024 15:29

I am doing my renewal right now.
Currently £450 with Admiral. Renewal quote £650.
GoCompare finds Aviva at £490
Roughly....I can't remember exactly.
My circumstances haven't changed at all in the last year.

I gave up earlier because the bloody web session times out if you don't interact frequently.

HelpMeGetThrough · 12/02/2024 15:32

The AA tried this with ours, 200 a year increase. I spoke to them and said I'd move everything we have with them, if they didn't give a realistic price.

Have ended up paying £20 a year extra for the car. Maybe worth a call to them.

WhollyGlorious · 12/02/2024 15:35

Our EV quote went from £340 last year to £401 this year, and that was with a no fault accident too, which I didn’t think was too bad. Staying with our existing insurer was about £150-£200 cheaper than the next best deal too.

We’re with Flow/LV.

pickledandpuzzled · 12/02/2024 11:54

Lordy. I’m dreading mine then.

I’ve got telemetry, and a great score, so would love to think that will help. I hate shopping for insurance, there are so many variables!

I wouldn’t bank on it helping tbh. I drove like miss Daisy for 12 months. I had a driver score of 97% only brought down by night driving. I was in the top 10% of drivers and was promised “you could be in line for a big discount”!! Got my renewal and they wanted £1600 up from £600.
I couldn’t fucking believe it!

Mine's coming up to his test and I'm feeling sick with anxiety about how he's going to stay on the road to keep in practice after he passes, let alone if he gets an apprenticeship and needs his own car. Bet there will be kids passing then not driving for years.

I can see DS passing then only using the licence for ID purposes only. He said he wants to use his Young Scot card as much as possible. Driving is almost like a luxury isn't it?!

Good luck with your DS when he passes 🤞

waterdusky · 12/02/2024 15:56

I've heard this a lot but my insurance went from 1506 (last year) to 1004 (this year). This is for premium insurance and my insurance is always quite high because I live in an area with high car thefts and I had a car written off 2 years ago by an uninsured driver so only have 1 full year NCB.

MumblesParty · 12/02/2024 16:00

You need to ring the AA, tell them it’s too much and, with regret, you’ll have to go elsewhere unless they can offer you something better. They’ll probably knock off £150, maybe more. It’s a game.

I tried this and they knocked off £50, which was still WAY off what I can get elsewhere.

DuckPondering · 12/02/2024 16:02

Yikes! My insurance for this year was a whopping £1,800 because I added my 18 year old twins who’d just passed their tests. Dread to think what it’ll be this year.

Thanks! We are in a country town so if DS gets an apprenticeship he'll likely need to drive, public transport isn't great. If he goes to uni he won't need to until his industry year maybe. Be better if he could drive my car to stay in practice though!

I had that once and I called the next day and got £100 off.

ShufflingAlong · 12/02/2024 16:15

Mine (age 50) no accidents went up by around 60%.

I shopped around and got better cover for just a small amount more than last years premiums.

The key is to shop around but it's a pain and takes time. I don't like comparison sites as I find you have to put in lots of extra detail and then you find that once extras are added the price is very different. Therefore it takes me half a day to shop around but this year it was definitely worth it.

Bugger. Oh well. I still like my Miss Daisy scores though 😂

toycat · 12/02/2024 16:41

We were quoted about £250 more than the previous year with Admiral, so sign up to insurance with another provider with a telematics box to keep costs down

girlfriend44 · 12/02/2024 16:42

Absolute nightmare.Everything going up.

TotalAbsenceOfImperialRaiment · 12/02/2024 16:46

Possibly due to an increase in larger and more expensive cars, which are more costly to repair or replace. I agree it's outrageous. I drive a slightly battered old hatchback which no self respecting car thief would want. I am effectively being penalised because some people choose to drive massive great twatwagons.
