My friends and my name!

Honestly need to know if this would annoy anyone else?
I can't say my real name, it is very uncommon and outing but for example let's say my name is Izabel spelt with a z.
All of my friends will write Isabel when speaking to me. My name is uncommon and I would have no doubt spelt it out when we exchanged numbers etc years ago, I am on their social media too.
They constantly write Isabel instead of Izabel!
I have corrected them in the past but nothing changes, it can't even be autocorrect because my name is so uncommon.
It sounds stupid but it makes me feel so insignificant to them that they can't even be bothered to spell my name correctly.
Would this annoy anyone else or am I unreasonable here?

YANBU it’s fucking lazy not to spell someone’s name right. A one off is understandable.

Kw1234hhggf · 10/02/2024 21:39

My name is Katy and in my email signature as Katy but soooo many work colleagues, whom I’ve known for many years, call me Katie. I find that rude and they aren’t my friends!

MidnightPatrol · 10/02/2024 21:40

Incredibly annoying.

but not uncommon!

I know of several friends / family where people get their names wrong (even how they say it), despite having known them for years.

Gazelda · 10/02/2024 21:42

Yes, it would annoy me. It is rude.

I work with someone who has a very unusual spelling of a common name. She makes a point of telling anyone who mis-spells it how it should be spelt. If it's in an email, she directs them to her email address or e-signature which both show the correct spelling.

She makes it clear that anyone who doesn't spell correctly is showing bad manners and disrespect. No one ever does it twice, and she's a very well liked lady.

Spirallingdownwards · 10/02/2024 21:43

Write cards and messages spelling their name wrong and see how long it takes them to say anything. When they do . Say oh yes and my name is Izabel.

Gymmum82 · 10/02/2024 21:47

My name can be spelt many different ways. My boss of 15 years still spells it wrong despite seeing it written daily. One of my closest friends does also, claims dyslexia as the reason she never gets it right.
Honestly I don’t let it bother me.

Allinadayswork80 · 10/02/2024 21:49

Yep, annoying. Happens to me all the time with colleagues and close friends too! My name is clearly on my messaging app/social media/work email etc. but it’s often still spelt incorrectly - putting an i or ie on the end instead of a y for example. It’s annoying when I would never be so lax and would make sure not to offend anyone else with this. Laziness. YANBU.

LauderSyme · 10/02/2024 21:51

YANBU. It is absolutely reasonable to expect your friends to get your name right.

B1anche · 10/02/2024 21:51

I'm with you, it's insulting and annoying. My name is spelt slightly different from the usual way (literally just one extra letter added in the middle). Its not my fault my parents chose to spell my name that way. But people constantly get it wrong, including family (aunts and cousins). My clients get it wrong all the time too, even when responding to emails from me which clearly show the correct spelling. There's no excuse for it.

mintmagnum3 · 10/02/2024 21:51

I have inherited a very European surnames, through grandparents. It's not completely out there and is short. Not all that hard to handle tbh. One z 😂

Anyway... I once won an award at work, and despite being included in the email, the comms person emailed our whole sit and misspelled my surname SO wrong that she even added a - into it!

I'll never forget that 🥴

Crooklodge · 10/02/2024 21:53

I have a very unusual common joined up two name but one name if you know what I mean like jerry Lyn but jerrylyn, but much much simpler. People do not get it. Cannot pronounce it for the life of them.

BusySittingDown · 10/02/2024 21:53

This would really piss me off tbh. I think that not learning someone's name is the height of rudeness.

It annoys me that my oldest friends (from school) call my DD a shortened version of her name that she can't stand and misspell her actual name. She's almost 17 so it's not like she's new, if that makes sense. I just keep calling DD by her actual name in the hope that they catch on (they don't). I think soon I will have to correct them.

If it was MY name I think I would have spontaneously combusted by now.

I have two friends called Tracy and Tracey and I always make sure that I spell their names correctly. I also have a friend with a daughter who hates her full name, so I always make sure I call her the shortened version.

Rachie1973 · 10/02/2024 21:56

Rachel. Was Rachael for years to certain people, including my ex mother in law! She arranged my wedding invitations and I spelled it out again, my then H spelled it out. She still ordered them wrong! When we pointed it out she said ‘no one will notice’. lol.

BusySittingDown · 10/02/2024 21:56

Oh yes, and DD always gets the wrong spelling of her name as well. I wish I'd thought of that when I named her 🤦‍♀️.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 10/02/2024 21:56

Yup. Totally infuriating. This happens to me all the time (think Nicki/Nicky sort of thing). The most baffling part is when someone who has been getting it right for ages suddenly starts spelling it incorrectly.

I find it incredibly hurtful; as if I'm not worth the most basic respect of getting my name correct.

I agree with PPs. Feel free to misspell their names from now on.

FabFebHalfTerm · 10/02/2024 21:57

There is one correct spelling of my Name. I've lost count of the variations people have come up with. Theres also one other name people have used instead. Even though it's nothing like my name.

I Don't let it bother me.

but you do you! If it bothers you just ASK them to spell it correctly, but to me that seems a bit pointless as if they start spelling it correctly, it's just because you've pointed it out, not because they suddenly have different feelings towards you

10ThousandSpoons · 10/02/2024 21:57

If they are your friends then say something

pictoosh · 10/02/2024 21:59

I don't think it's a hill to die on, no.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 10/02/2024 22:01

I get this a lot at work.

My name is in my email address. I don't understand how people still spell it wrong.

I just like the people who spelt it correctly more.

CatrionaCat · 10/02/2024 22:50

My name also differs from the usual spelling by one letter. I don't generally correct people (even though it's in my email signature) because I don't think they do it out of malice. However, I did get annoyed with a colleague with an unusual name who always corrected people on her own name but couldn't be bothered to get mine right.

iamveryearlytoday · 10/02/2024 22:53

My DH's name is one letter away from the "usual" spelling (e.g. Immanuel and Emmanuel), but even after five years my family and friends still get it wrong. It's really not that difficult, and it frustrates me no end.

Prawncow · 10/02/2024 22:59

It is rude.

I know you’ve said your name is rare but it could still be autocorrect. It drives me mad by ‘correcting’ surnames.

DahliasEverywhere · 10/02/2024 23:08

My name is constantly misspelled- think Tracy/Tracey. DD has a Welsh name and is infuriated by the number of people who manage to get her email address correct, but then completely make up what her name might be when doing the Dear… bit!

Tatonka · 10/02/2024 23:11

This would really piss me off, they should make an effort. Just shows how lazy people are. I'd correct them every single time!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 10/02/2024 23:20

I spelt my sister's name wrong until I was in my 20s (and "Pheobe" still looks right to me!). Bless her, she's such a sweetheart, she never said anything.

😳

And I have a name with a "usual" spelling (mine) but several "foreign" variants and I invariably get one of them. Doesn't bother me, don't know why - although it might explain why Phoebe never said anything!
