To think pancake day has lost its vibe?

Notafanoftaylorswift · 07/02/2024 18:31

Child of the 80’s, teen of the 90’s here.
I remember pancake day being quite a big event at home, mum would make the batter and flip them in the air and we’d have lemon and sugar, maybe some kind of squeezed chocolate sauce in later years.
Those were the only times we’d have pancakes, aside from a holiday in France when we tried large crepes.
Nowadays, my Dd has pancakes some weekends for breakfast or if we go out for a breakfast/brunch, she’ll often choose them. I would’ve been over the moon with Nutella and strawberry pancakes, nowadays it’s common place.
How do I make this pancake day a bit different and has PD lost its vibe?

I get what you mean but we rarely have proper crepe pancakes so it’s still a big deal in our house!

ColonelRhubarbBikini · 07/02/2024 18:36

We love pancake day in our house. It’s the perfect holiday. No decorating or gift buying or any obligation at all, just scoff a load of pancakes and voila.

We usually try and do an all day pancake fest so American pancakes for breakfast, savoury pancakes for lunch and then after a (normal non pancake based dinner) we lay out a big buffet of toppings and go hell for leather at them.

ColdButSunny · 07/02/2024 18:36

We only ever make home made pancakes on pancake day so we still have the vibe. But also - it's the only day of the year when supper is mainly dessert! My DC may have a token ham and cheese one, but then they move on to lemon and sugar, ice cream, bananas, berries, choc sauce, maple syrup etc etc. Definitely not a disappointment!

That's exactly how we do pancake day in our house too! Husband makes for every meal and it's brilliant. The kids love it and we all get to choose our own toppings so everyone gets what they like.

I agree OP. Although I don’t like pancakes so they are still a bit of a one-off for me. But I also have happy memories of the lemon and sugar and golden syrup ones and kids have them all the time now.

JustJessi · 07/02/2024 18:39

Definitely agree! My mum was a child of the 60s, and said they would eat nothing but pancakes on pancake day! They’d make a huge stack of them and that’s all they’d eat.

JellyfishandShells · 07/02/2024 18:41

We have many of them ( thin crepe ) with lemon and sugar, exclaim how delicious they are, wonder why we don’t have them more often as they are so easy, then totally forget about them for another year.

So they do retain a special vibe for us and I rather like that it’s not another tradition lost.

BoohooWoohoo · 07/02/2024 18:43

You need to eat them less often. Pancakes is a Christmas Day breakfast, pancake day or restaurant choice in this house .

Laiste · 07/02/2024 18:44

I wish it was pancake sat. Or sunday.

I find tuesday is a night when i just want a normal meal and sit my arse down before kids bed time.

Pancakes are best eaten fresh and I don't want to stand in the kitchen farting about with batter.

DefendingPan · 07/02/2024 18:45

as others have said do crepes with sugar and lemon. You don’t get them at a maccies breakfast or in toastable form from the supermarket so it’s still something different.

Also if you are one who give up some sweet stuff for lent then it’s special as the last date you get to enjoy that.

SisterAgatha · 07/02/2024 18:46

Ours is still like this 🤣

Partners family not as much as they haven’t been in the country as long but we all have at least 8 each!

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 07/02/2024 18:47

I do Dutch style savoury pancakes and then sweet pancakes. Only on pancake day though so it remains different.

SisterAgatha · 07/02/2024 18:48

Always a slow mo vid of me Vs partner flipping too. Reckon my eldest is big enough now to flip a pancake unsupervised so it’ll be ON this year!!!

CJ4713 · 07/02/2024 18:49

Did it ever really have a vibe OP??? 😕

Surely it was only practiced in some families and not others?

Notafanoftaylorswift · 07/02/2024 18:50

I think we’ll do the thin ones as rarely have these, I might make like a pancake station with loads of different toppings and let Dd do herself 🤔
Need ideas for toppings!

I can't even remember the last time I had a pancake! But I do remember youngest DC insisting I make pancakes every shrove Tuesday and I wonder if he still makes them now (he's vanished).

queenMab99 · 07/02/2024 18:55

We do have them at other times, but not so often that they are commonplace. I taught my sons to cook them, when they got to teenage years, so I didn't have to do it. My grandchildren cook them now and my grandson is very good at making the batter, and insists on doing it all. I love Shrove Tuesday, we have lots of fillings available, and it is messy but fun!

Shivermetimbers13 · 07/02/2024 18:55

Pancake day has lost its popularity. I sometimes make savoury pancakes for breakfast, filled with left over spag bol mixture from the night before.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 07/02/2024 18:56

I'm in my 50s and it was never a big day for us. We'd mostly remember to make some pancakes, but it wasn't a big deal.

elQuintoConyo · 07/02/2024 18:58

We have them for breakfast on Christmas day and I'll make them this Sunday as I don't get home from work until 9pm weekdays, I'm certainly not fannying around making them that late on a Tuesday.

I frickin LOVE pancakes! Roll on Sunday.

AhBiscuits · 07/02/2024 18:58

It was a special event in our house as kids too. My DS has pancakes for breakfast all the time. I'll get some different fillings or something, try and jazz them up!

SirenSays · 07/02/2024 18:59

I find there's never enough time on Tuesday. So we do crepes and then on Sunday we'll do it properly with a topping station and different pancakes - blueberry, chocolate chip... DD has been asking me to make a crepe cake this year.

Quitelikeacatslife · 07/02/2024 19:05

We love it, I put lots of bowls out with grated cheese, ham , mustard , savoury sauces, also chopped banana Nutella strawberries lemon sugar . Don't have them all together 😂. Then make a big batch one at a time take it in turns probably have about 3 or 4 each it's actually nice to wait and chat in between, let them try to toss their own . I like to have savoury then sweet.
