To think pancake day has lost its vibe?

Child of the 80’s, teen of the 90’s here.
I remember pancake day being quite a big event at home, mum would make the batter and flip them in the air and we’d have lemon and sugar, maybe some kind of squeezed chocolate sauce in later years.
Those were the only times we’d have pancakes, aside from a holiday in France when we tried large crepes.
Nowadays, my Dd has pancakes some weekends for breakfast or if we go out for a breakfast/brunch, she’ll often choose them. I would’ve been over the moon with Nutella and strawberry pancakes, nowadays it’s common place.
How do I make this pancake day a bit different and has PD lost its vibe?

I wish it was pancake sat. Or sunday.

I find tuesday is a night when i just want a normal meal and sit my arse down before kids bed time.

Pancakes are best eaten fresh and I don't want to stand in the kitchen farting about with batter.

I totally agree. Then realised that we can have Pancake Day on any day we choose. Go wild and have Pancake Day on Saturday instead, I promise you won't get arrested by the Pancake Police.

It was a big day for us, child of small town in the 1980’s midlands! I remember my mum would buy one of those squeezy plastic lemon things and the caster sugar was on so thick you had to crunch your teeth through it.

I married a Dutchman so my dc are used to going to a pancake house restaurant for dinner when we visit the Netherlands. We also have them weekly at home so I suppose for us it doesn’t seem as unusual now.

minipie · 07/02/2024 19:13

I’m a mean parent and rarely make pancakes for breakfast (I am not a morning person) so pancakes are still a Big Deal in this house.

We are away for Tuesday so will be pancake Saturday I expect. Which also has the benefit that I can do them for brunch which is more pancakey than tea IMO.

AnnaMagnani · 07/02/2024 19:16

Back in the 80s we never had pancakes except on pancake day.

And then you would eat nothing but pancakes all evening so v special not to eat anything savoury. Only fillings were jam or lemon and sugar.

Basically you need to eat pancakes less often so it's a big event.

You4coffee · 07/02/2024 19:18

One of my DC was born on Pancake Day - so we go all out. Pancakes for breakfast, lunch and supper. DC genuinely thinks it's a second birthday!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 07/02/2024 19:19

I'm having Pancake Sunday! I'm working late shift on Tuesday so I won't be home until after ten and I'm not doing pancakes then - so I'm going to save it up until I'm home on Sunday and fry myself up a stack!

I love pancakes and have absolutely no idea why it never occurs to me to make them on any other day. I think I just forget about them, or I look around the kitchen and I haven't got any fillings so I put it off.

CMOTDibbler · 07/02/2024 19:20

What makes it special here is just having pancakes, and no savoury stuff. If I was being fancy I'd say we have a topping station, but its just I get everything out and you can knock yourself out with nutella, mini marshmallows, strawberries and sprinkles if you feel thus inclined, or just golden syrup.
I make a giant batch of batter in a 4 pint milk container in the morning, and then its easy to shake and remix and just keep going until everyone has had enough

DappledThings · 07/02/2024 19:23

I make pancakes (proper crepes) most Sunday mornings. But Pancake Day is still exciting because it's the entire meal. Ham and cheese ones followed by sweet ones.

KittySmith1986 · 07/02/2024 19:24

Child of the 70’s and this post brought back wonderful memories of watching my dad take part in the local annual pancake race! You’re right, it’s not as fun as it was back then.

cinders92 · 07/02/2024 19:25

We have scotch pancakes fairly often with fruit or bacon, but I think the crepes is still an occasion! Especially if you have a few different toppings to choose from. Although, you can't beat the classic sugar and squeezy lemon, IMO.

Laiste · 07/02/2024 19:26

@LittleGreenDuck i get what you're saying (just do it on sunday instead) but the idea of that just throws me 😂

I only cook them because it's pan cake day.

If it wasn't actual pancake day then i wouldn't bother.

splatmouse · 07/02/2024 19:27

Toppings: Lemon juice, sugar, chocolate spread (or any of the current variants like caramel or biscoff), mini marshmallows, banana slices, berries, squirty cream, sprinkles.

(I personally just like some butter on mine!)

Laiste · 07/02/2024 19:28

I agree sugar and lemon is The Topping.

Snozwanger · 07/02/2024 19:28

We have American pancakes with maple syrup and fruit throughout most of the year so to keep pancake day different we have the traditional thin crepe style ones with lemon and sugar. The kids still look forward to it.

My DS has pancakes every morning for breakfast. Definitely lost its vibe in this household 🤦🏻‍♀️

Girlontherailreplacementbusservice · 07/02/2024 19:42

Pancake Day hasn't changed but loads of others things have upped the pace so it seems dull by comparison. Back in 80's Easter was an absolute max of 3 eggs (1 from your parents one from each set of grandparents), Halloween was at most trick or treating half a dozen houses or a party with a few friends and spot of apple bobbing, Christmas happened on Christmas day apart from a visit to a shopping centre Santa not for the whole of December (1st of December boxes, elf on the shelf, light trails, steam train rides, tree shaped crumpets, Christmas Eve boxes etc weren't 'things' when I was a kid in the 80s). We got excited about pancake Day because apart from Christmas and birthdays it was one of only a tiny handful of days that were different now everything is a big deal so it seems much less by comparison. 🥞

Hankunamatata · 07/02/2024 19:56

Scotch pancakes are a regular food here in NI so we tend to do traditional style for pancake day with all the trimmings yum

Ponoka7 · 07/02/2024 20:19

We were skint In the 80's, so we made pancakes with jam and scones as our general puddings. When times got better then shrove Tuesday was more of a big deal. I used to give something up for Lent, then Easter would be a mini/personal Christmas. My GM and DH were Catholic, so the whole thing would be a big deal.

JellyfishandShells · 07/02/2024 18:41

We have many of them ( thin crepe ) with lemon and sugar, exclaim how delicious they are, wonder why we don’t have them more often as they are so easy, then totally forget about them for another year.

So they do retain a special vibe for us and I rather like that it’s not another tradition lost.

Got thrown by the quote function not being where it normally is!

Anyway, this is what we say every year too🤣 Love pancakes but only make them on pancake day so they are still special. We do have American ones occasionally through the year but not often.

Everanewbie · 08/02/2024 11:22

Maybe because its religious (at least in origins) and religion in this country (at least Christianity) seems to have faded from our national consciousness.

Maybe because we're a bit more health conscious these days, and if we're cooking from scratch, its going to be something healthy.

Also, there isn't an awful lot of money to be made from it. Valentines day can sell all manner of plastic crap, cards, food, wine, holidays. Easter we can flog chocolate eggs, cards, legs of lamb. Christmas speaks for itself. Shrove Tuesday? Not many marketing teams are salivating over selling a bit of jiff lemon and flour.

guineverehadgreeneyes · 08/02/2024 13:53

To keep the vibe alive, you need to create your own pancake day memories and evolve some family traditions. I suggest you start with a 1st February Breakfast, when the Pancake Goblin arrives. Wrap 12 small Pancake Day gifts to be opened daily in the run up to the Big Day to build the excitement. For the 12th (Shrove Tuesday Eve), present the kids with Pancake Eve Boxes, with new Pancake Day aprons, a frying pan, hot chocolate, lemon scented bath bombs and a new pancake themed blanket for snuggles on the sofa.

Sorry.

wubwubwub · 08/02/2024 13:57

AngelsWithSilverWings · 08/02/2024 13:59

Still a big thing in our house. Kids are now 15 and 18 and they still expect pancake day to be marked. I make the batter , DH cooks the pancakes because he's the best at it. DH was away one Shrove Tuesday and they've never forgotten the sub standard pancakes.

We don't have pancakes on any other day unless it's the American breakfast style ones which are a completely different thing to me.

😂😂and don't forget the Great Pancake Dinner to which you must invite all living family members, particularly those who detest each other. Certain fillings are compulsory, including Brussels Sprouts.
