To ask for Planitarium recommendations not in London

DD4 has got obsessed with space so I'd like to take her to a planitarium. We're in the West Midlands but would happily travel a few hours to find a good one. I remember going with I was a kid to London and loving it but the Greenwich one is just too far.

There are a few on Google but can't tell if its a half arsed video or a really good starry experience

Totally taking advantage of AIBU here!

Bristol used to have one next to the science museum but. Not been for years though.

Spinet · 06/02/2024 21:06

How far is Bristol from Birmingham? There's a good one there at the science place.

TeenLifeMum · 06/02/2024 21:07

Bristol one reopens in the summer.

TheChosenTwo · 06/02/2024 21:07

There’s one in Winchester that I’ve been to on a few school trips. I have to close my eyes as they make me feel travel sick 😂 everyone else said it was brilliant though!

Whenthechipshitthefan · 06/02/2024 21:11

Oh brilliant! Think Bristol one if closed. Winchester night be a bit far. Although that sounds perfect! 😋

National space centre in Leicester

I second this. It's a great place to visit.

Leafpicker2000 · 06/02/2024 21:14

The Thinktank Birmingham - I haven't been yet.

youveturnedupwelldone · 06/02/2024 21:16

There is one in Chichester which is fab, but a bit of hike from Birmingham unless you're really dedicated! Been there many, many times.

Leicester looks amazing! But Birmingham is closer if its half as good?
Sounds like Leicester night be worth the drive

It looks good doesn't it! I never normally go the Space bit in the World Museum as you have to pay for that bit if I remember correctly, and the rest of the museum is free.
It's a good little day out but my god the lift takes FOREVER which is not ideal if you have a pram.

pinkberet · 06/02/2024 21:28

The one in Leicester is brilliant. I've taken my class there on a school trip and I take my own children frequently. The ticket is an annual pass

Bloody hell, I've lived in Sussex for 33 years and I had no idea there was a planetarium so near!

That's added to my list of places to visit. Thank you, @youveturnedupwelldone !

Yay! I love that place!

OldTinHat · 06/02/2024 21:33

Second the one in Chichester. It's fab! Been loads.

Mumaway · 06/02/2024 21:35

Winchester Science centre has a nice but small planetarium, but it is within an AMAZING interactive science centre

mummyofhyperDD · 06/02/2024 21:41

Been to both the think tank and the Leicester space centre. The space centre's planetarium is much better.

mummyofhyperDD · 06/02/2024 21:42

I think the space centre is better for 8 years plus as you need to be able to read well to get the most out of the displays. Birmingham think tank has a lot to offer younger children

TeaandHobnobs · 06/02/2024 21:48

Space centre in Leicester would get my vote - better than the one at Winchester, I think.
But I agree with @mummyofhyperDD that the rest of the space centre museum is definitely catered towards children who are fluent readers.

titchy · 06/02/2024 21:48

Is Jodrell Bank too far?

Newusernameforthiss · 06/02/2024 21:49

Is the one at Jodrell Bank still there? LOVED it in the 90s

VeryDiscombobulated · 07/02/2024 05:16

Jodrell Bank in Cheshire would be close

unexpectediteminthebraggingarea · 07/02/2024 08:52

The Leicester one is excellent .
Winchester is good for science generally but if you have a space obsessed child Leicester is the one, my son loves it (haven't been to any of the others yet)
