Hi everyone I wanted to post this as I’m currently going through a police investigation with starlking and at my interview to my personal statement the police officer spoke to me about what social media do I have and i mentioned jilts facebook WhatsApp and snaochat and this was her warning :

in so many cases of these young children, women getting hurt, or stalkers snaochat maps is normally found to be how the person is found. Even with it turned off there is 3rd party apps which people can use just your Snapchat name they don’t have to be your freiend and it will show your location

its also very hard to get any old messages that have been deleted back on Snapchat’s if needed for evidence

I think that although I was told due to an abusive ex with the tragic news story’s recently of teenagers it’s important to make parents awear of this on their teenagers phones.

Everyone should know this and it's why I've never used it and I certainly would never use WhatsApp either.

Tinseltiss · 04/02/2024 10:58

i fully agree I have a WhatsApp that’s linked to a old number due to my PayPal lol. But when I was getting stalked I was able to find out who the person was by typing their number into to WhatsApp it helped him but it could be the other way around and have horrible consequences

People should research apps before downloading them on their kids phones. I agree that the disappearing messages are a major concern when it concerns Snapchat. It’s good if you are a teen and want privacy but it’s also good if you’re up to no good and want the evidence to disappear.
If you’re checking a phone then don’t forget the My Eyes Only section.

What is my eyes only section please? @BoohooWoohoo

I'm wondering this too.

LetsgoLego · 04/02/2024 12:03

Everyone needs to be aware of their digital footprint. Google your name and usernames every so often you'll be surprised how easy it is for some of you to find you and your children and all their movements.

You can track people by entering their number into WhatsApp, it brings their photo and full name up, you can also delete messages

LetsgoLego · 04/02/2024 12:04

Snapchat messages can be retrieved btw, they are archived somewhere I can't remember where but they aren't fully deleted.

Am also interested to know this.

ETA is it the same as "private browsing" on a laptop?

You cannot track people on WhatsApp by inputting their number.

It only brings up your picture if it's set to be visible to everyone. And it only shows the name you also set as visible.

You can delete text messages too, you can delete emails too, so I don't understand your point here. Unless you mean automatic deleting messages, which again needs to be switched on by both sides.

Edited

A picture vault that is password protected. They go by various names based on the phone.

But someone has to have my number in order to find me and the only info they get is that I'm on WhatsApp?

how would they delete my messages?

Exactly this, its all in the privacy settings. Never ceases to amaze me how many people don't check the settings when downloading a new app, though.

EmmaEmerald · 04/02/2024 12:21

Right, so all my WhatsApp privacy stuff is on.

I am baffled by "tracking someone on WhatsApp". I was very reluctant to use it but I can't see an issue here.

All their movements? Please tell us more.

Itslegitimatesalvage · 04/02/2024 12:26

@LetsgoLego

You can’t track people on WhatsApp. All the see is a photo, if you have it set to public and the name you give yourself which could be anything at all. You don’t need to use your name if you don’t want to. Just use a nickname. But even if you use your name, so? What can they do with a name? Which is already publicly known! Your name isn’t a secret.

LetsgoLego · 04/02/2024 12:48

EmmaEmerald · 04/02/2024 12:23

All their movements? Please tell us more.

If you have a child in hobbies that celebrate achievements and post them on the internet, if you've approved your children to be visible on the school's sites and social media, if you yourself have a public social media presence, if you own your own business registered with companies house, if you're on the public electoral register/192... I'm not saying everyone is trackable but a large number are through simple Google searches.

Often it's not you who lets the information about you and your family out it's friends and family. It's quite remarkable what you can find within 10mins of googling someone (helpful when internet dating!)

This may not be applicable to you specifically but generic you.

Tinseltiss · 04/02/2024 13:31

They can but the police find it very hard to acsess I don’t know the full details but I think the pictures ones are gone I might be wrong

OP posts:
Tinseltiss · 04/02/2024 13:32

It’s a part of snaochst which has a password and you can hide things

OP posts:
Tinseltiss · 04/02/2024 13:35

This is more about people being able to track a child’s location exactly by just having a username. The police warned me due to my stalker but it made me think of teenagers especially kids caught up in these gangs atm which some poor women or man on here might be dealing with and to protect their child to delete the app I don’t know much the police just warned me and I wanted to spread awearness to others who nights be in simular situations x

More the issue with What's app is Meta have repeatedly commercialised your contact information, and contacts and have been fined massive amounts for breaching data protection legislation.

Rather like the post office scandal, no one cares, till ITV make a drama explaining it.

Snapchat's focus isn't your privacy.

Bubble2024 · 04/02/2024 13:59

Why didn’t you know this?

Tinseltiss · 04/02/2024 14:03

I knew snaochat had a map thing I didn’t know there was 3rd party apps that by using a user name you could type in and see people’s location without needing to one be there friend and two have it turned on
