Dog humping - To leave him to it?

Devilshands · 03/02/2024 08:03

I have a dog, just out of puppyhood - 14 months. He’s a big breed so not yet an adult.

Since day one he has been a humper - toys, beds, bushes, my other dogs (attempts to - he usually gets within two foot and thinks better!), blankets, cushions, etc. I thought there was something seriously wrong with him and took him to the vets several times - turns out he’s just a raging sex pest. More than adequately exercised (before anyone says that’s why!)

Anyway. I usually leave him to it. Doesn’t bother me or him or my other dogs. No intention of getting him snipped as he’ll be shown once he’s older (before someone tells me I should).

This morning I get a knock on my front door from my neighbour. Her garden backs onto mine, but her house is down the hill. This means that from their top floors they can see into part of my garden (I have a big wrap around) and I can see into theirs. Anyway, she tells me I need to control my dog and stop him humping. Apparently it’s deeply traumatic for her and her children (primary age - but not young). No opportunity to say anything and then she calls him a pervert and stalks off!

I go outside, and he’s got his sofa bed (you fling it over the sofa to stop fur getting on it) in the garden and is merrily humping it whilst staring into their garden. He looks so happy…and he’s not actually doing anything wrong.

So, AIBU to let my dog hump in the privacy of his own back garden?

Gave me a morning laugh! Mine grew out of it by 18 months, but our garden borders a churchyard and one of two visitors glanced over the wall to see a happy Labrador rogering his large teddy!

MsDataPotata · 03/02/2024 08:26

Leave him to it, he'll get tired eventually. My female chihuahua sexually harasses my cat when we have visitors. The circular rug in my living room has been given the nickname 'Amsterdam' because it hosts so many live shows. Me, the kids & the cat don't bat an eyelid because we're used to it..... new visitors however.....

quisensoucie · 03/02/2024 08:28

Does he try to do legs too?
Not sociable behaviour really

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 03/02/2024 08:31

The neighbour's a bit batshit but have you considered getting him done? Would cut out a lot of that behaviour.

loza12 · 03/02/2024 08:35

See my male dog is only 13 months old and he is a humper beds, teddies and he tries it with only my dad when he visits I obviously can't get him done yet as he is a dachshund so can be done until 18 months but he stares you right in the face while
He's humping his bed 😂 I really hope once he's been done he will stop doing it!

My DB's intact lab is always trying it on with other, mostly male dogs. He's especially fond of the pug cross across the road from us. Doesn't hump humans though.

Baircasolly · 03/02/2024 08:39

I mean, it's not technically her business, but I would also find it difficult to enjoy sitting in my garden if there was a dog next door staring at me while he's having a wank.

Crackoncrackerjack · 03/02/2024 08:40

I hope you told your dog he’s a pervert ! I’m sure he listened

doorbellcamera · 03/02/2024 08:44

It's your garden - why is she staring at him? Does't everyone look away instinctively when you see an animal doing this? Maybe her kids have asked her and she's tied herself in knots trying to explain humping?#

My female dog does this to my arm now and then if we are sitting on the same level. I don't know why as nothing even touches anything down there, so it must be a reflex of some kind. She does her little jig for 20 seconds, huffs and wanders off or settles down for a nap.

elm26 · 03/02/2024 08:48

Called your dog a pervert? Sorry but this has made me laugh out loud this morning! I have a 10 year old sprocker spaniel and he still humps his bed on occasion, has done since being a pup. We leave him to it. Bloody pervert 🤣

WHALESURPRISE · 03/02/2024 08:53

Lol 😂

If he's a habitual humper getting him done might not make any difference anyway. For lots of dogs it's not necessarily something sexual, just something they do when they're excited and happy 😂

heldinadream · 03/02/2024 08:54

Tell her you're thinking of reporting her for her peeping tom behaviour spying on your dog's sex life. 👀

blahnc · 03/02/2024 08:59

I think I'd try and limit him to one or two 'humpable items', and then try and redirect him to those items if he gets overexcited. If he's running rampant on everything he'll probably sooner or later start on people's legs, and especially if he's a big breed he'll be knocking people over (family members large breed used to pin people to walls/the floor and it actually really hurts lol)

Missingmyusername · 03/02/2024 09:03

Oh I missed the pervert part 🤣🤣🤣I’m just here for the comments now.

What’s he humping outside? 🤔 just say he’s happy and having some fun. Don’t those children ever go to a farm park!

Get him a Teddy for some indoor satisfaction?

My Lab humped as a pup, he got into the car one day and my aunt had brought along this huge, fluffy cardigan (she wasn’t wearing it!) he grabbed it, jumped into the boot and loved that cardi the whole trip. We got him done once he became of age.

I must confess I was a bit bemused!!

He doesn’t do it for hours on end - maybe 3/4 minutes at a time and only a few times a day. Then he prances off to wee on something. So the fact it bothers her so much is just odd…it’s not like he’s at it 24/7! He’s not the Hugh Hefner of the dog world

Could be displacement behaviour brought on by excitement or over arousal (not necessarily sexual), one of our bitches used to hump our male dog when I got home from being at work.

TerrierOrTerror · 03/02/2024 09:36

My female terrier is and has been since 8 weeks old a humper. Spaying at the appropriate age had no effect. We do then to try to distract her as she can wind herself up and get into a frantic state but as long as she's not doing it to use/other people/dogs she's not causing harm.

I'd suggest your neighbour try distracting her children.

OrlandointheWilderness · 03/02/2024 09:47

I suppose you could try chemical castration as a short term fix that wouldn't affect his fertility, or your neighbour could mind her business!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 03/02/2024 10:05

Sorry, missed that detail!

ThePure · 03/02/2024 10:27

Mine is also an inveterate humper
Pre castration he used to hump peoples legs and inanimate objects but now that is rare and he reserves his affections for other dogs. I think it is more excitement than sexual as it's all other dogs male or female, small, large, young, old, neutered or otherwise. He just really really likes a hump. If he's been playing with another dog for a while you can guarantee sooner or later he'll try it on and I'll be dragging him off.
Super embarrassing
