To think you do not need to announce your name change

Why do people do it ??
"Name changed" because this topic I'm about to post about is just so outing. I can't possibly risk it.

Why not just post with your changed name then .... without announcing that you've changed it prior to the post ??
What's the point?

YABU - there's a valid reason to state this
YANBU - it's ridiculous and somewhat unnecessary

ALittleBitAhAh · 29/01/2024 21:40

I've always assumed it's to stop posters going "interesting first post op" which is sometimes said?

barelyfunctional · 29/01/2024 21:40

Otherwise people accuse you of being a new poster (and therefore apparently fake) because you have no searchable posting history

Whatdoesthatbuttondo · 29/01/2024 21:40

It’s in case you get accused of being a troll, or being a new poster making up weird shit to get people to talk about their boobs/poo/children.

Yeah most of the time it’s obvious: “dahlinks I just really struggle to get myself off, is it my technique? Tell me IN GRAPHIC DETAIL how you find it best to masturbate” etc.

MindfulGrateful · 30/01/2024 20:42

Ahh I name change a lot just because I like to. I didn't think anyone would care or notice... but that might explain a bit of hostility that I've found sometimes

Pollyannamex · 30/01/2024 20:44

I don’t mind that bit but it’s annoying when people start listing old threads

‘name change but penis beaker, sistene chapel etc etc’

i dont know why it just makes me cringe

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 30/01/2024 20:51

I can't be arsed to name change. My life is not that interesting sorry 'outing' that anyone would give a shit or be able to identify me.

I always roll my eyes at these posts. Glad it's not just me that finds them cringe.

afkonholidaynearleek · 30/01/2024 20:58

I don't really mind when the OP states they've changed their name. It let's me know that they're a regular.

I find the ones who search the user and then go "omg first post must be a trollllll" really boring indeed.

Me too! But I don't ever feel the need to announce it really.
From the replies here it makes more sense as to why some people do.
I've never actually had anyone make a comment about it being a "first" post though

Ooo I've never seen this, but I think it would make me cringe also 😆

Yeah most of the time it’s obvious: “dahlinks I just really struggle to get myself off, is it my technique? Tell me IN GRAPHIC DETAIL how you find it best to masturbate” etc.

Except it’s not, yesterday there were 2 separate creepy threads about little girls wetting themselves and posters rushing to give advice and share experiences. One was removed and the other (with very weird language and lots of emphasis on the child being wet) is still standing.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 30/01/2024 22:38

Do people take that much notice of everyone's name? I don't unless I'm replying. I then put @ in front.
Also l don't think App let's you .
You have to do it via the net.

I'd be wary of that. Sometimes the tiniest detail can give you away to someone who knows you, and then they can see all your posts and find out what you really think of your MIL and that you fancy the plumber (for example). I once knew my aunt's friend's daughter who I've never met was TTC because she mentioned in passing a little detail about her wedding. Either name change regularly or only post what you would be comfortable posting on your FB profile and a billboard on the school run with a picture of your face.

I pay little attention to usernames but I do occasionally search one if I'm trying to decide what I think about a thread.

FunnysInLaJardin · 30/01/2024 23:08

I haven't name changed for about 17 years. I wouldn't be me otherwise!

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 30/01/2024 23:13

I don't care either way.

I don't really notice people's names on here.

I know about 4, one because they have a real issue with Irish people, 2 because they are very sharp & unnecessary bitchy and another who posts repeatedly and may need help.

I remember a few more because their posts are always veey considerate. I haven't a clue on most of the rest.

Other that than, I don't notice. I'm more likely to remember a thread than a username.

BetsyBobbins · 30/01/2024 23:32

What I find it really amusing is that the vast majority of the "NC as this is super outing!" posters proceed to post the most detailed accounts that no name change in the world would be able to conceal them if anyone knew them IRL 🤦🏽‍♀️

I namechanged for something really outing because I didn’t want it linked to my previous posting history in case anyone I knew read it! I didn’t care if people I knew saw the post I’d namechanged for, but I didn’t want them to see the rest of my posting history as there are things I’ve posted about that I wouldn’t want people IRL to know 🤷🏼‍♀️

But when people say that they mean they don't want to be identified by that thread and then have that linked back to their other threads.

So if posted something I thought was really outing I would NC, so then people might go "ooohh, DappledNewName is actually my mate Mary Smith" but they wouldn't he able to know that their mate Mary Smith is also the one who posted potentially hundreds of other embarrassing things.

NewName24 · 30/01/2024 23:53

YABU as has now been explained.

Floatlikeafeather2 · 31/01/2024 00:04

I don't understand it because no one knows who anyone is in the first place, surely, so why is one alias "safer" than another? I do recognise usernames because sometimes they make me laugh but I obviously don't know who they are. And if something is so outing because it's a unique or bizarre situation, people in your real life are still going to know it's you talking about it/them, whatever you call yourself. In any case there are so many posts every day (anyone got any idea how many?), what's the chances of anyone you know reading it? I only see a fraction of the posts because I'm not on here all day.
