To think you do not need to announce your name change

Why do people do it ??
"Name changed" because this topic I'm about to post about is just so outing. I can't possibly risk it.

Why not just post with your changed name then .... without announcing that you've changed it prior to the post ??
What's the point?

YABU - there's a valid reason to state this
YANBU - it's ridiculous and somewhat unnecessary

I don't understand it because no one knows who anyone is in the first place, surely, so why is one alias "safer" than another? I do recognise usernames because sometimes they make me laugh but I obviously don't know who they are. And if something is so outing because it's a unique or bizarre situation, people in your real life are still going to know it's you talking about it/them, whatever you call yourself. In any case there are so many posts every day (anyone got any idea how many?), what's the chances of anyone you know reading it? I only see a fraction of the posts because I'm not on here all day.

As explained by pp, a name change won’t stop people potentially identifying you if you include niche details in the post you’ve name-changed for, but it will stop them, if they’ve twigged who you are, being able to see all your myriad previous posts under a different name/s, where you’ve slagged off your child’s headmistress, insulted your best friend, and said you can’t bear the sight of your dh any longer!

As it's been said before, it's also to explain why there is no posting history, as MN attracts so many trolls that if a post looks iffy, some may want to check before they report.

And no, trolls don't just post very obviously pervy posts. Many make posts meant to pull at heartstrings for attention, or to encourage bashing of benefits or other marginalised people.
