To be concerned about my Ddil on Maternity ward.

Basically she is 38 weeks and was admitted after routine MW appointment yesterday. They have told her that she has protein, leukocytes , ketones and blood in her urine and they have prescribed her Buscopan. The Doctor said that the pain she has is probably growing pains. The nurses keep offering her pain relief but she has been told that she can't take any and she was meant to go on the baby monitor yesterday and twice today but she has only been on once at 3pm today.
I totally understand that the NHS is in a bad way and the nurses and Dr's are all over stretched but I am worried if everything is ok.

Have they sent a sample of her urine for culture? Sounds like an UTI is possible.

whitebreadjamsandwich · 24/01/2024 16:32

Growing pains at 38 weeks??? Has she complained about constipation? With her urine testing like that, she either has a raging uti making her sore, or is pre-eclamptic. If the community midwife was concerned enough to admit her, they need to be doing something - has she had bloods etc?

Travelcrazy · 24/01/2024 16:39

Yes she had blood tests on Monday, not sure about the urine test for cultures. Thank you for the replies.

Who’s told her she can’t have pain relief?

Sanguinello · 24/01/2024 16:48

It's good that she was monitored this afternoon. Let's hope that happens every day and you will soon have happy news to share.

Ohdojustfuckoff · 24/01/2024 16:53

They can be a little lax in hospital sometimes.
I was admitted in my last pregnancy, due to have injections to strengthen my babies lings, and repeat CTG scans. 24 hours later, nothing had really been done, the consultant tore strips off someone, it all became much better quickly.

Any possibility she can ask someone what her care plan consists of?

Sapphire387 · 24/01/2024 16:55

Is anyone able to be there with her - is your son there? Does she want anyone to support her?

Travelcrazy · 24/01/2024 16:57

Thanks all, my son is there.
Great idea about the care plan and yes hopefully they will have some good news soon!

Is anyone there with her to advocate for her? I’ve just spent a week on the maternity ward and after a few days I learnt that you have to be a bit “pushy” and be buzzing the buzzer for pain relief and baby monitoring etc. as they do forget things. I found it really uncomfortable at first but after a while was buzzing the buzzer every time I needed something because otherwise I was just forgotten about unfortunately. If she is there with anyone then they can also help advocate for her and make sure she’s not forgotten.

I don’t blame the midwives etc. for forgetting or not getting round to things, unfortunately I think they’re just very understaffed :(

Wishing all the best to your ddil and grandbaby. It sounds to me like she has a wonderful support in her MIL ❤️

MrsCarson · 24/01/2024 17:16

Sounds like a UTI to me (nurse) and why no pain relief she's probably very uncomfortable. Even some paracetamol would be useful if she does have a UTI. I hope your son is advocating for her and not sitting there like a wet lettuce.

Not that he should bloody well have to! I find it disturbing to see a medical professional saying as standard that relatives should have to advocate for safe, basic medical care in a hospital. It's a function of failure that we have to do that.

lioneggs · 24/01/2024 18:46

I'm pregnant and have been told I'm not allowed to take buscopan so that seems strange firstly

BritishDesiGirl · 24/01/2024 18:57

Buscapan for those symptoms? It's a UTI she needs antibiotics

PamelaParis · 24/01/2024 19:00

I know you are worried, but it's not okay to share someone else's private medical information on the internet. Does she or your son know that you've posted this?!

She’s hardly given her name date of birth and location 🙄

I think you are overreacting! The post is anonymous. Leave her alone.

Wishing you all well OP. You must feel in a helpless position.
Just want to say I had the same at 38 weeks. All was fine. Could they ask if she can be put on the monitor more regularly?

Travelcrazy · 24/01/2024 21:17

Thanks for all your help everyone. @PamelaParis if you have nothing constructive to say kindly don't comment. I could be in Timbuktu or anywhere else in the world for all you know, hardly easy to pin point anyone's identity from my post. I am purely asking for some guidance on how to best support my Ddil and hopefully help to make sure my grandchild is not in danger.

@Travelcrazy are there any updates on DDIL? I hope that she's feeling somewhat better as the day has gone on.
I think it's lovely that you've posted for guidance with your DDIL and Grandchilds interests at heart.
She's lucky to have such a lovely MIL.

Travelcrazy · 25/01/2024 01:07

@Ohdojustfuckoff no change at the moment. Thanks so much for your kind words. 🙂

Any update on your DDIL?

Travelcrazy · 03/02/2024 09:22

@Gagaandgag thanks for asking. She was allowed home after a week and now has just a few days for her due date so hopefully not long now.
