Straight women, were/are you aware that Jodie Foster is gay?

Been mildly curious about this for a while. I’m a gay woman and my loving well-meaning mother will occasionally make slightly clumsy attempts to bring up gay films or famous gay women that she assumes I must be interested in because they are also gay (e.g. Ellen Page as was). But she has never mentioned Jodie Foster, and although I haven’t tested it I get the impression she isn’t aware, maybe partly because although JF is now ten years married to a woman she has never quite made the big ‘I am gay’ speech.

AIBU to think a lot of straight women still haven’t really noticed that Jodie Foster is gay? And, if I’m wrong, when did you become aware?

YABU - I know, I’ve known for ages, yawn

YANBU - I didn’t know, or didn’t know until very recently, but anyway, yawn

OBVIOUSLY what matters is her acting, but I am mildly curious about what causes someone’s gayness to register/not register with the wider public

Yes i knew but honesty who cares?

Asparagus1 · 21/01/2024 16:11

I’m not sure if I knew or not 🤔😂

YankSplaining · 21/01/2024 16:11

I’m bisexual, but I knew that lots of people figured she was gay, even back when I was a preteen in the late nineties who hadn’t figured out my own sexuality. And read too many celebrity gossip magazines. 😉

CormorantStrikesBack · 21/01/2024 16:12

I’m straight, I’ve known for ages and ages that JF is gay. Can’t remember when. I didn’t know when silence of the lambs came out….not sure if it was public knowledge then or not.

mynameiscalypso · 21/01/2024 14:24

Yes, I know/knew. I have no idea when I 'found out' because I don't think it was ever a big deal so it didn't really register.

I'm the same, I knew but no idea how or when.

cooroocoocoo · 21/01/2024 16:12

YABU - I know, I’ve known for ages, yawn

But why is it important?

Poppysmom22 · 21/01/2024 16:13

Nope had no idea but it’s not any of my business

CormorantStrikesBack · 21/01/2024 16:14

I was reading the OP thinking I didn’t know Elaine Paige was gay…..😁

beatrix1234 · 21/01/2024 16:16

I’ve always known since I was a teen, I believe she didn’t want to make it public because the minute you come out as a lesbian in Hollywood it ‘niches’ you into certain type of roles (?). I mean… it really affects your work if you’re an actress, not so much if you’work a 9 to 5 in an office.

I've known this for a while. Wasn't there some speculation about her being in a relationship with Mel Gibson? I feel it was around that time I read about her being gay.

Never heard of that speculation. They worked together, though.

Wouldyouguess · 21/01/2024 16:18

It has hardly been a secret for years...
Did you know so was Elton John? Mind blown.

I knew (I'm straight) and I like her for not pushing it in our faces as it's completely irrelevant. I don't care who people go home to at the end of their working day. She's a good actress, produces good work, and that's all that matters.

Not 'pushing it in our faces'? What would that look like, I wonder?

Floatinginatincan · 21/01/2024 16:21

Didn't know, don't really care or have any interest in her. I don't particularly enjoy her as an actor. Seems to play basically the same character in every movie.

secular37 · 21/01/2024 16:21

Her eyes are very piercing.

roastedrapidly · 21/01/2024 16:22

I always presumed she is gay, but I'm aware she is very private and protects her private life. So I didn't really speculate.

I didn't know she was in a long term relationship/ married, that's great for her and kudos to them for keeping it low key if that's what they wanted.

katepilar · 21/01/2024 16:23

TO be honest, I dont really care. I dont think I notice it with women in general. Sometimes I do think about a man that he is possibly gay.

MargaretRiver · 21/01/2024 16:24

I thought Russell Crowe accidentally outed her in the 90s with a “she bats for the other team” type comment when asked if they were dating

loverrr · 21/01/2024 16:27

No, I didnt know that

I cannot think of a time I didn’t know this.

Me neither

I knew she had a wife but can't say I've given it any thought. The sexuality of others is none of my business and I have no interest generally in gossip. Let people live their lives in peace.

I've just mentioned this to my gay DD and she says she has no interest in info like this either. She's only interested in people she actually knows in real life.

I’m glad your DD is growing up at a time when she is likely to know other openly gay people in real life. That definitely wasn’t the case when I was growing up. Secondary school of 800 kids, not one openly gay kid in the 5 years I was there.

Oh and no openly gay teachers. Of course. Section 28 and all that.

I assumed she was but tbh never gave it all that much thought. I was pleased when she came out though as it's sad people feel they need to hide it for whatever reason.

I am 50 if that makes any difference.

Oganesson118 · 21/01/2024 16:30

No but she's not a celebrity I have much interest in. I only generally know such things if its a celebrity I am a fan of, if it's a big "story" or its absolutely blindingly obvious (thinking of the camp gay male celebrities as an example)

Dominoeffecter · 21/01/2024 16:33

I didn’t know but I would

RawBloomers · 21/01/2024 16:35

I remember the controversy about her sexuality when silence of the lambs came out. And over the years from various reporting it seemed assumed she wasn’t straight, so I assumed it too. I also watched her Oscar’s?Golden Globes? speech many years ago where she talked about being in a relationship with a woman and her quandary over whether or not to talk about it. I don’t know why but I got the impression she was bisexual rather than lesbian.

So I’m a bit Yawn. But also, I see why it might have passed people by. She wants to focus on film without having to be loud about her relationships or have her relationships change the way people see/treat her, like most straight people get to. But it’s important for gay people to have public figures who are out. She’s tried to find her own line on that.
