Straight women, were/are you aware that Jodie Foster is gay?

Been mildly curious about this for a while. I’m a gay woman and my loving well-meaning mother will occasionally make slightly clumsy attempts to bring up gay films or famous gay women that she assumes I must be interested in because they are also gay (e.g. Ellen Page as was). But she has never mentioned Jodie Foster, and although I haven’t tested it I get the impression she isn’t aware, maybe partly because although JF is now ten years married to a woman she has never quite made the big ‘I am gay’ speech.

AIBU to think a lot of straight women still haven’t really noticed that Jodie Foster is gay? And, if I’m wrong, when did you become aware?

YABU - I know, I’ve known for ages, yawn

YANBU - I didn’t know, or didn’t know until very recently, but anyway, yawn

OBVIOUSLY what matters is her acting, but I am mildly curious about what causes someone’s gayness to register/not register with the wider public

Straight and did know. Can remember there was speculation decades ago probably when she was in her 20s but can't quite remember exactly. She seems to be a very private person.

riceuten · 22/01/2024 18:46

She’s fluent in French as well - rare for an American

GlomOfNit · 22/01/2024 18:52

I'd known for ages like most people, as it's been out there for ages, but she has - for her own reasons - not wanted to become a poster woman for lesbians in her industry. I get the impression she's quite private.

She's always been one of my favourite actors and I think she's also pretty hot. Grin

Hunstanton · 22/01/2024 19:01

Thanks!

Mothership4two · 22/01/2024 19:02

Think you are on the wrong thread @Hunstanton!

bakebeans · 22/01/2024 19:03

Yeah she came out years ago. I think it was long before/after Kelly mcgillis came out

Hunstanton · 22/01/2024 19:03

Oh god I am 😫

icclemunchy · 22/01/2024 19:06

I couldn't tell you when but I remember finding out and being slightly surprised in the same way I am when I didn't realise someone has died or is married.

I really love her acting, I remember seeing her speak about bugsy alone and being terrified she'd fall because she'd never worn heels before 😁

Harls1969 · 22/01/2024 19:07

Well, I found out today! It's not something I've ever thought about though

mumsy27 · 22/01/2024 19:10

It's private matterI don't care.

I've known for years..but it's nobody's business. Why people have to "come out, is beyond me Straight people don't, and there's no "expectations" for them to.

As a straight woman were you worried about people's reactions to finding out you were straight?

Did you worry about losing your family? Worry about your rights to marriage or even to traveling to certain countries with your partner?

Were you worried that people wanted you dead because you were straight? Worried that people would scream at you that you're going to burn in hell? Worried that people would target you at a night club and shoot it up because it was full of straight people?

Ya... That's why coming out is still a big deal.

cremebrulait · 22/01/2024 19:21

i wish people’s sexual orientation was not such a big deal. I mean this sincerely because when i was younger, as i wasnt boy crazy and had my own style of dress - people kept speculating i was a lesbian. At times people took me to certain bars and cafes where they thought i might meet a woman. Lol. I dont fan y women one bit. And now that job applications list at trimes sexual orientations I didn’t even know existed, i find it increasingly weird that society cares so much.

Rosscameasdoody · 22/01/2024 19:23

Yep. Became aware of it some years ago.

exaltedwombat · 22/01/2024 19:30

Who’s Jodie Foster?

Peppermintpatty24 · 22/01/2024 19:33

Josette77, You are making a lot of assumptions here. At no point did I mention my sexuality.

cavalier · 22/01/2024 19:38

Who’s Jodie Foster?

If you are being serious, she is a very famous actor who has won two Oscars, three BAFTAs, three Golden Globes, many other awards including the Cecil B. DeMille and an Honorary Palme d'Or. She has been in A LOT of films and also directs. She is currently in the TV series True Detective. If you Google her you will see she has been prolific in the film industry.

MajesticWhine · 22/01/2024 19:42

I think I was aware of this, somewhere in the back of my mind. OP your mum sounds adorable.

Edited

If you have been in a non hetero relationship then surely you realize why straight people don't come out?

Have you experienced homophobia?

Raincloudsonasunnyday · 22/01/2024 19:49

Surely this depends on the poster's age?

I was too young to have seen Taxi Driver when it came out (and arguable JF was too young to act in it), but just ripe for Silence of the Lambs. Quite a lot happened in her career and life between those two and, like other posters, I can't remember a time I didn't know. She's worn (or tried to wear) her sexuality lightly. I get the impression she never wanted to be a poster girl for anything other than the roles she chose. (She's suffered some severe trauma in her life, IIRC). She's definitely a role model for me, in terms of being a woman who takes her professional life seriously and with courage.

smoothieooo · 22/01/2024 19:56

Yup! Known for many years and you've just reminded me that episode 2 of the AMAZING 'True Detective' is on tonight!

I wonder how many of the ‘who cares’ posts were written by posters who just saw the title of the thread, didn’t actually read my original post, and clicked ‘reply’ assuming I was a straight woman who had only just discovered JF is gay and was in a massive tizz about it. I guess that could explain some of the replies…

I wasn't assuming anything, it's nothing to do with me if you are straight or gay the fact didn't even enter my head and neither should it, the days of gay people really suffering because they couldn't come out are long gone it doesn't bother most people. Your making a song and dance out of nothing.

theduchessofspork · 22/01/2024 20:38

Yes, maybe because she has kids with her wife / female partner

I also remember reading she was quite good friends with Mel Gibson (bizarre)

This is the end of my Jodie Foster knowledge

The only one making a song and dance of it is you.

It is illegal to be gay in 64 UN member states, punishable by death in some. Funerals of gay soldiers are picketed in the states. I personally have lost family and worked with homeless youth who have been kicked out their homes due to their sexuality.

You don't think it's a problem anymore because it's never affected you.
