To think Bluey is actually pretty shitty

I hear people raving about it all the time and we've watched a few episodes this morning and I'm kinda horrified!

First episode the kids use emotional manipulation to get dad to play what they want - why don't you love me - oh fine I'll play. So teaching our kids emotional manipulation is ok to get what they want?

Then there's one where the dad Bandit is acting like he's born yesterday and mum gets upset he's not done dishwasher and he flat out ignores her. Totally showing a respectful team in marriage.

Then there's one where mum is trying to get calm Bluey by reading a story ready for bed and Bandit it doing loud puppets and winding her up, so Bluey learns her dad isn't to be respected cos he's an idiot and he doesn't respect her mum.

Like wtf how is this show positive?

I think you’re reading far too deeply into it. There are lots of episodes where the parents work as a team. And they’re small kids - it’s not emotional manipulation- they just want to play!

Archymum · 21/01/2024 10:40

Watch "relax" and "Sleepytime." Two of the best episodes of television, in any genre, ever made. The show's keen observation of the reality of being a parent (and a kid) is unmatched.

Lovingitallnow · 21/01/2024 10:40

In born yesterday he's showing the kids that sometimes grown ups just know better and can't always explain satisfactorily why a rule is a rule. It's one show where I feel mum and dad have equal caring responsibility and they don't just write off dad as an idiot- I'm looking at you daddy pig.

Watch rain or onsie and settle in for a cry.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 21/01/2024 10:41

I agree OP, we don't allow bluey in our house anymore as DD's behaviour after watching it was awful! She would copy Bluey, pestering her dad to play all the silly games, not listening etc

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/01/2024 10:41

I don't think it is shitty but it is certainly smug and overrated.

Doppelgangers · 21/01/2024 10:43

Anyone who thinks bluey is shit needs to watch cricket and Sleepytime and then try to argue the show is not good. Like all shows there will be some episodes better than others but these two are probably some of the best episodes of any show ever written and I will not be told otherwise.

threeblowdries · 21/01/2024 10:46

There is definitely a few episodes where they go too far with the parents being unrealistically silly.
I think you have started with a bad couple.
There are way better episodes where they really hit the mark portraying parenting as well as kids interacting and navigating life.

Robinbuildsbears · 21/01/2024 10:47

It's just monkeys singing songs mate, don't think too hard about it.

WinterSnowFox · 21/01/2024 10:51

It makes me laugh when adults say they sit and watch it alone like it somehow makes them “cool” I’ve never watched it and thankfully kids have never watched it either. Looks rubbish

It makes me laugh when people claim something looks rubbish but admit they've never watched it. Hmm

It makes me laugh when people come onto threads about stuff they know nothing about, admit they've never seen it and then think they are cool because they dislike something others enjoy despite having never seen it? Hmm

Adults watching kids shows is cringe either way! Don’t need to watch it to have that opinion.

Because I’ve heard of it and I’ve seen adults claiming they sit and watch it without their kids. How sad.

semantlename · 21/01/2024 10:57

Just don't talk to me about Copycat or I will break down 😭

It's a brilliant show and it shows lots of depth. My eldest learns so much from it, I'm constantly amazed by what is picked up!

semantlename · 21/01/2024 10:57

However, I have apparently become Mount Momanddad and I could do without that 😂

It's a show the whole family can enjoy not just a kids show, that's a bit like calling a panto a kids show.

Also you're obviously entitled to any opinion you like about a dhow but let's not pretend it's not a pretty worthless opinion given you admit to having never seen it...

I enjoy watching it with the kids, so can totally understand why an adult would enjoy it.

The fact my sons (one in Secondary) can still enjoy a show together about two little Australian girls makes me very happy. Also, Muffin is an agent of chaos - love her.

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 21/01/2024 11:07

I hate kids things for the most part but I bloody love Bluey. It's the closest I've seen to a fictional portrait of what my childhood was like and what my kids is like, family feuds and all.

Futb0l · 21/01/2024 11:12

Kids dont read into or perceive any of it on the level you do.

They pick up the simple messages it pulls out. Like being kind, taking turns, sharing, listening to others, not hurting people's feelings, telling a grown up if something upsetting you, not constantly telling on others if its not important,

They also just find it funny. My kids are the same ages as bluey and bingo and they laugh so much watching it.

I like that the parents aren't perfect. Its normal. And usually by the end of the episode if bandit has been an arse, he's realised and said sorry.

Vavazoom · 21/01/2024 11:22

YABVVVU.

TunnocksOrDeath · 21/01/2024 11:22

Some of the episodes are downright silly, and some are bold and smart - that mix is exactly what children need, IMO. The episode when the wild bird dies, even though they took it to the vet, and how they all deal with that news, and how it STILL manages to be presented in an age-appropriate way and not scary is just brilliant. The fact that Bandit and Chilli are not perfect parents and mess up sometimes, but always apologise and sort it out with kind words, is a lesson in itself.

pontipinemum · 21/01/2024 11:24

After a long stint of iggle piggle - see username! DS who is 1.5yr had taken to Bluey, DS does the cutest dance to the theme song. It teaches little lessons. Not too deep and majority of it goes over his head. I think some of it will still go over most children's heads

BouleDeSuif · 21/01/2024 11:25

I like Flatpack but otherwise the mother has the most patronising voice ever, the dad lets them run riot, Bluey is a little git and the only nice fella in it is Lucky's Dad.

katmarie · 21/01/2024 11:32

I massively prefer Bluey to something like peppa pig, for example. Bluey has a good mix of episode stories, jokes for kids and grown ups, and I like that it's not all perfect families. The Sticky Gecko episode is brilliant, I have had similar experiences trying to get my kids out of the door.

And 'onesies' made me cry. I had a similar experience with someone close to me, and it really hit home. It's brilliantly written and very very thoughtful.
