have you ever done something as ridiculous as me?

I bought something online. I liked it an I wanted to buy another one before it sells out. The website says 'only 13 left in stock'.

I don't want to buy one until the 13 becomes a different number because I feel it will be unlucky! And I've been checking this repeatedly for about a month and it's just stuck at 13 left in stock. So I want it but haven't wanted to buy it.

I'm not even normally superstitious at all. I have no idea why I am being this insane. I've relatively recently suffered a bereavement so it maybe that but really WTAF?

Am I alone in my insanity or has anyone else done something as crazy? I doubt it but hold out hope for company to make me feel better.

No, that sounds crazy! What happens if someone buys 13?

TwiddlingMyToes · 20/01/2024 17:17

Maybe reframe it and think that there were 20 to start with, so you'd actually be buying the 7th item.

IDontHateRainbows · 20/01/2024 17:18

That's a bit weird to be fair.

Stubbedtoes · 20/01/2024 17:19

You realise that it's probably not even a real amount of items in stock? It's just a sales tactic.

Choice4567 · 20/01/2024 17:21

I was going to say the same as @Stubbedtoes. Especially if it’s been stuck on that for a month. It’s just a number they pick to make it seem like low stock

ReachedTheEndofCake · 20/01/2024 17:23

Here goes, if it makes you feel less alone I’ll share my insanity:

I cannot throw away shampoo/conditioner bottles individually. I have to wait until there’s a pile of very-nearly-but-not-quite empty ones and chuck them all together… so they don’t think I’ve abandoned them and they aren’t alone.

Waiting until there’s a number you’re more comfortable with sound perfectly normal to me. 😏

Ladyj84 · 20/01/2024 17:30

Lol is this serious and what if a person comes along and buys all that's left

okImAMadW · 20/01/2024 22:01

Yes. I do realise this.

I realise that I am mad. I did say.

@ReachedTheEndofCake thank you very much. It's similar but next level. You made me feel better thank you.

Not the same, but after my FIL died I did have an obsessive tea making habit. I think it came from the time when he was sick and shortly after he died, we were over at his and MIL's house a lot and there were lots of visitors and I didn't know what to do to help so I kept offering everyone tea. It became rather compulsive. For over a year afterwards I couldn't stop making tea. I'd arrive at my desk with a cup of tea to find two full cups already there and not yet cold. I was just on autopilot. Anyway, not the same, but another example of weird behaviour in grief.

Poppyseed14 · 20/01/2024 22:12

You could buy 2 OP and then you would never know which is no 13 and which is no 12?

Me too

Tothemoonandbackx · 20/01/2024 22:27

I don't like odd numbers on packs of food, like 9 crumpets,!?!?! Why 9??? Toasters come with 2/4 slots, unless there's 3 people eating 3 crumpets, so won't buy them, that's just one example, it applies to other odd numbers food items x

samestyle · 20/01/2024 22:34

When in the shop, could food or clothes, anything, I won't take the first product on the shelf, I have to take the one behind, if it's the last one then I'm hugely disappointed which is ridiculous Grin

okImAMadW · 20/01/2024 22:55

@samestyle I do that but only with piles of newspapers or magazines

I do this!

salamithumbs · 20/01/2024 23:04

I totally understand, I can never leave the car radio volume on 13, it has to be 12 or 14 or else I worry I'll crash the car 😭

And whenever I see a bottle that's slightly bent over/battered in the shops, I have to buy it because it looks so sad hunched over, like a pet that nobody wants to buy

I (very quietly) apologise to cups if I can't stack them next to other cups with the same pattern when they are put in the dishwasher or cupboard.

So I get the shampoo bottle thing. They want to be with their friends. Blush.

I have a similar thing. I can never leave an empty plastic shampoo bottle/shower gel bottle if we are abroad on holiday as for some reason it makes me feel guilty so I trail them home again and then put them in the recycling. Honestly, I am pretty normal in everything else, I think ......

TeabySea · 20/01/2024 23:16

This is as mad as when I wanted to buy an umbrella in the charity shop last week and two other customers freaked out when I put it up to double check it wasn't damaged.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 21/01/2024 00:08

I'm not superstitious mad but I do like to attribute emotions to inanimate objects. My DD loves teddies and when we go shopping for one, she takes a long time choosing. Picks them up, cuddles them, says what she likes about each one. I always feel sad for the ones that don't make it, especially those that come 2nd and 3rd. You'll be glad to know I don't share my despair with DD.

Bought a car a few weeks ago and need to sell my old one now. They are currently sat side by side outside and I feel bad for the old one, I can't look at it when I'm getting in the new one. 😅

That's all quite mad isn't it.

noooooooo · 21/01/2024 00:33

I feel bad pinning teddies up on the line when they’ve been washed and try to do it the least sore way. I also can’t split a pair of anything even if I don’t want them both.

@Hillsmakeyoustrong DH once got overcome leaving his dilapidated VW at the scrapyard, he said the headlights were watching him go. Yours will have a happy new life. Maybe he will go to live on a farm.

Hankunamatata · 21/01/2024 00:43

Or they don't update the stock regularly on website

TheHallouminati · 21/01/2024 00:48

What is the item @okImAMadW ?
Maybe someone on here will buy the 13th for you and we could do an experiment to see if the stock levels are updated? actually quite interested

SwordToFlamethrower · 21/01/2024 01:11

13 is a sacred feminime number. The goddess number.
Women have 13 cycles a year. Modern misogynistic religions have persuaded people that it's evil.

It isn't. Friday 13th is extra powerful and sacred because Friday is Freya's day, the norse goddess and combined with 13, a sacred goddess number is a female holy day.

So go for it. Buy the thing.

MonsteraMama · 21/01/2024 01:16

Send me a link OP, I'll buy 13 so you can buy 12 😂 I was born on Friday the 13th so 13 is lucky for me!
