That was my first thought too!!

I have a friend who is a total Esperanto fan. He is almost evangelical about how amazing it is.

It's all a bit weird...

Why do you think it is weird? I think it's great it is increasing again now. I learnt a little bit 50 years ago as a child and was always sad that it was declining in use as I grew older. So glad it's growing so fast now. It is a fantastic idea - my Grandfather used to tell me of how often it was used between allies of different nationalities during the war, both on the battle field, and in prisoner of war camps, and after the fighting had finished, managing the truce. It undoubtably saved many lives

Ooh, I need to go and find my text books first. It's been too long. Esperanto museum in Vienna is fascinating for the history and its Hitler connections.

My 15 year old decided to learn Esperanto last year. You can do it on Duolingo. She ordered 2 novels in Esperanto - The Curious Dog in The Nighttime and another but I forget what one.
Curious Dog took a while to arrive. It was clearly one of those "print to order" books.
My Granny apparently learned it for a while. She was Welsh but of the era when speaking Welsh in schools etc was forbidden (born 1905) so maybe that was her "fine - screw you I'll learn another language" rebellion.
I don't know any Esperanto.
Which is why this comment is in English.

What a surprise to find Esperanto here. I don't know how you convince people it works, without them learning enough to experience it for themselves.

I wish it was taught in more schools. It seems to be taught much more in Asian countries. I am in a face book group with 30k members from all over the world, which is nice. I am a complete beginner and heavily reliant on google translate at the moment

Bonan matenon.
There was a trial teaching Esperanto as the first foreign language in schools, and a GCE was developed. Mum proudly had the certificate on her wall. The kids who learned Esperanto first, took well to learning conventional foreign languages.
