Suddenly noticed the absence of tinsel!

For no reason at all today, it suddenly hit me that I didn’t see ANY tinsel this Christmas! Not only was there none in our house, I didn’t see it on anyone else’s tree, or in any shops either! Come to think of it, there may not have been any for some years now!
Is the absence of tinsel a UK-wide thing?

Maybe our collective tastes have evolved!

Garman · 10/01/2024 16:54

No, there was plenty of tinsel around, I bought more, saw it in loads of shops.

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 10/01/2024 16:54

Tinsel has no place in my decorations!

Talipesmum · 10/01/2024 16:55

I just spotted a piece on top of a picture frame in our house this lunchtime - thought I’d swept up all the Christmas critters but clearly not. We had plenty. I like it!

kbg · 10/01/2024 16:55

We just reverted back to tinsel this year for first time in yearssss and loved it. Found it easily in B&M

HardcoreLadyType · 10/01/2024 16:55

I haven’t put up tinsel for more than 20 years!

AInightingale · 10/01/2024 16:57

No, there wasn't much for sale, and it sold out pretty quick if they did have it.

I'd imagine it might be considered environmentally unfriendly now for some reason, in the way glitter is? Maybe it 'sheds' microplastic fibres?

I love it though.

INeedAnotherName · 10/01/2024 16:57

Saw some in B&M and Tesco at Christmas.

The rest is in my attic as I collect more each year. HTH

APurpleSquirrel · 10/01/2024 16:57

We put tinsel up on picture frames & on the bannister. We took everything down at the weekend, but a few bits were put behind the door & got forgotten.
I saw it in a few shops before Christmas.

Garman · 10/01/2024 16:57

The way people shit all over those who like tinsel in such a “we are superior and have eVoLvEd” way is so weird.

Goddessonahighway · 10/01/2024 16:58

DH and I were talking about the same thing this Christmas. We still use tinsel on the tree buy we've noticed that the more tasteful trees don't have it. We're sticking with it to give the kids a taste of an 80s Christmas. Even put the foil decs on the ceiling 😁

HareSong · 10/01/2024 17:01

We are still using the same gold tinsel we've used for years. Lametta, too (collected and re-used each year). I like the sparkle, and it is something I loved in childhood. I saw plenty in the shops, though mostly in weird colours!

CaptainWentworth · 10/01/2024 17:01

Yes! I wanted to buy some to make a halo for DD being an angel in her nativity play and I had to try I think four different shops before I found any (John Lewis, at great expense - it was quality stuff though, she looked like she had one of those fur headbands on, but sparkly!)

The lady in Poundland had said they’d had some but sold out.

CheeseandMarmiteToasties · 10/01/2024 17:03

My husband asked if we could phase it out this year. I complied but felt sad inside!

DappledThings · 10/01/2024 17:04

I've always had tinsel. A tree without tinsel always looks sad and unfinished to me.

equinoxprocess · 10/01/2024 17:04

I think all the missing tinsel was in my workplace this year, we were swimming in the stuff.

Correct

EvilElsa · 10/01/2024 17:05

There was loads in The Range -a whole wall full. We had some around our picture frames. Definitely seems to have declined in popularity but I did spot it! My autistic DS absolutely loves it (texture, sound and colours) so we do tend to seek it out though.

Hatty65 · 10/01/2024 17:05

Funnily enough I just thought about that yesterday! I was taking the tree down (late) and packing all our tinsel up and it suddenly occurred to me that I don't think I saw any tinsel in the shops this year. Ours has all been owned for years and I wondered if you could still buy it.

Had a conversation with DH about 'is tinsel not eco-friendly?' 'Do they still make it?'

AllTheChaos · 10/01/2024 17:06

I don’t like it but that’s because of childhood memories of the dog getting at it and vomiting it everywhere! I always loved it until that point!

AlisonWonderbra · 10/01/2024 17:06

Plenty in our house!

Icepop79 · 10/01/2024 17:07

Always loads of tinsel in my house - round all picture frames and bannisters…and anywhere else the kids find to put it..!

This

The only tinsel I used to decorate with but a tree without tinsel looks unfinished.

QuestionableMouse · 10/01/2024 17:09

Definitely available - I've just found a strand I bought but had to hide from the cats! (in my bathroom drawers - not sure why I picked there!)

QuestionableMouse · 10/01/2024 17:09

It was from lidl I think
