Suddenly noticed the absence of tinsel!

For no reason at all today, it suddenly hit me that I didn’t see ANY tinsel this Christmas! Not only was there none in our house, I didn’t see it on anyone else’s tree, or in any shops either! Come to think of it, there may not have been any for some years now!
Is the absence of tinsel a UK-wide thing?

I put light coloured tinsel round my Christmas tree's trunk, it looks too dark and gloomy otherwise. It's got fake snow with sequins in clumped on the branches but that occurs on the outer bits and not in the depths. The tinsel lightens up the interior and adds a bit of sparkle.

The tree we had as kids growing up (1970s) was total tinsel and was soooo sparkly, so for me now a tree has to have twinkles and sparkles to be proper Christmassy. I did see lots of tinsel in the shops, I think some posters just weren't looking for it and missed it?

I do have an enduring fondness for tinsel, paperchains and those foil garlands and chandeliers etc, they are so relentlessly cheerful (and again are reminders of childhood Christmases where elegance/tastefulness wasn't required).

My 6yo bought it all in B&M for her room

I like some tinsel to fill out my tree a bit but it is quite difficult to find in shops now. But I did come across somE in Tesco

We still have the same tinsel we’ve had for years along with the same artificial tree. I love when the light catches it. There was some in shops but verging to non shiny stuff on sale these days. Thank god the stuff lasts forever.

Crispyturtle · 10/01/2024 17:26

I bought some in John Lewis and at our local garden centre this year.

I fricking love tinsel, it was the most exciting stuff when I was a kid and now my kids dress themselves up in it and do dances. I know it’s tacky but that’s the joy of it 😄

I saw plenty of tinsel in the school I work in- all the trees have it, and all the little angels in the nativity had tinsel halos!

None in my house though!

LittleGreenFroggie · 10/01/2024 17:28

I've still got loads wrapped around my staircase. Can't be arsed to pull it down! Saw loads in the shops too, in all sorts of colours.

Octavia64 · 10/01/2024 17:29

Nope I bought loads and put it all up!

Love me a bit of tinsel!

JADS · 10/01/2024 17:31

I love tinsel. Ours is at least 10 years old, maybe older, it's gold and red. My children love it too.

Dahliasrule · 10/01/2024 17:35

I used to love the Lametta type of tinsel. We had some that I carefully kept for years. It is different from the type I think most people are talking about. It is like extremely thin strips of tin foil ruched up and I used to love the way it sparkled on the tree.

Tukatia · 01/12/2024 21:24

I've used my tinsel for 9 christmases how can that be bad for the environment?

TheITCrowded · 01/12/2024 21:26

hahaha ghost thread; I read the first post and was thinking "What? It's December 1st! I haven't even seen any decorations yet" 👀😂

henlake7 · 01/12/2024 21:47

I didn't think people bought tinsel....doesn't it just appear in your amongst your Christmas decorations?

Mercurial123 · 01/12/2024 21:53

John Lewis has plenty of choice, and Selfridges have tinsel covered baskets. It's still popular. MN sees it as "common," which is quite funny as the most middle class shop JL sells it.

Ginkypig · 01/12/2024 22:28

I don’t know how recyclable it is but it lasts for years iv got some that goes up every year that is at least 10 but I think closer to 20 years old!

now I agree it wouldn’t be great if you were to buy it then chuck it and change it every year obviously.
