Holiday- when do you pack early or night before?

Stressedgiraffe · 09/01/2024 18:30

We have a trip/holiday next week.
I want to start to plan to pack now/next couple of days. Figure out what I'm going to be wearing/ if anything needs washing sort out luggage etc
They want to do it the day before.
Who is being unreasonable?
Them - aibu? Pack day before
Me- yanbu? Pack early

Nobody else's business either way how someone chooses to pack their own stuff.

Stressedgiraffe · 09/01/2024 18:33

It is if I end up having to wash something quickly the night before!

I pack the day before otherwise I forget what I’ve packed and have to take it all out again to check I’ve got everything I need. Nothing wrong with deciding what you want to take though and making sure it’s all clean, just don’t put it in the case.

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 09/01/2024 18:34

Everyone (over 10/12) packs their own, though I did provide a list and prompts until 16. Me - short trips 1-2 days, weeklong, weekend before, big holidays (over a week and/or complex) 2-3 weeks ahead

MissCalamity · 09/01/2024 18:35

You do yours early, they do theirs the night before!
I personally do mine the day before, but tell DP and kids not to wear things they want to take about 3/4 days before we go and have all my toiletries in a big shopping bag ready to pack.
Soo jealous!!

LlynTegid · 09/01/2024 18:35

I have found sometimes things I would have taken that have worn out, or that I need say something such as more suncream. Also allow time for any printer to need more ink as it never runs out at a convenient time.

TheDandyLion · 09/01/2024 18:37

I start throwing things together in a pile a week to a couple days before. Going through lists to see if there is anything I need to clean/buy. Then pack the bag in 1 go the night before.

AlwaysForksAndMarbles · 09/01/2024 18:38

I write a detailed list in advance so I can make sure things are washed and ready, then just put it all in my case the night before.

If you’re responsible for everyone’s washing, give them a deadline in advance, and then refuse to do it the night before. Lack of planning on their part does not constitute an emergency on yours.

Doingmybest12 · 09/01/2024 18:39

The day I go , obviously think about it and ensure things are washed during the week before .

Ragwort · 09/01/2024 18:39

The simple answer would be that your DH/DC should do their own washing if they are of an age where they 'choose' what to wear or pack ... if this is not an option then just make it clear you are not doing any washing later than a specific day so if their clothes aren't clean they take them as they are and tough luck.

JenniferJupiterVenusandMars · 09/01/2024 18:41

I write a list and get things ready a few days to a week before, I pack the night before.

lalaloopyhead · 09/01/2024 18:42

I start getting things ready early, so make sure anything I may want to take is washed and ready to avoid last minute washing...I don't actually commit to what I will pack until the night before though and basically cram as many things as possible into my case/bag.

00100001 · 09/01/2024 18:44

I pack 2-4 days ahead. Making sure what I need is retrieved in good time and anything I need is bought.

DH packs his stuff the night before and learned years ago to suck it up if his stuff wasn't done....no I don't t fucking know where X is, and yep Y is in the wash bin and won't be washed and magically dry by tomorrow, oh, you don't have a pair of beach shorts? Never mind. You can sort it out yourself when you get there.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 09/01/2024 18:44

I give a laundry deadline and everyone sorts their own but I do remind dd2 48 hours before if there is no sign of packing going on
if anyone needs new items/clean items last minute - not my problem.

Nerurio · 09/01/2024 18:44

Within the UK, I'll pack either the night before, or (usually) on the day we leave, in the morning.
Going abroad, usually a couple of days beforehand.

SnowsFalling · 09/01/2024 18:45

Pack the day before.
Not got enough clothes to do anything else.

Do a sanity check of number of teeshirts/pants etc a few weeks before incase I need to go shopping.

Moier · 09/01/2024 18:46

I start sorting my toiletries a week before in case l need to buy anything.
If it's an early flight l pack night before. If late flight l pack on the morning. But because we go abroad 6 times a year.. l do have an " holiday drawer" with essentials in l need each time.

PriOn1 · 09/01/2024 18:47

Night before.

There are generally very few things that are so essential that to leave them behind would be a disaster. I might make a short list of those things and generally wash clothes that are likely to be needed, but can’t be bothered doing more and when I had family, we didn’t have space for cases lying about.

AutumnBride · 09/01/2024 19:07

I gather things together probably starting about a week beforehand, hang things at one end of the wardrobe or put them into one drawer, but I don't actually pack until day before.

GenXisthebest · 09/01/2024 19:09

If your DH or DC want to pack last minute, let them. If something isn't washed that's their problem!

FloofCloud · 09/01/2024 19:12

For me, a day or two before ... I always find I'm panicking otherwise.
I'm
Not beat organised so have to force myself to be

Clarinet1 · 09/01/2024 19:17

I tend to make a list of what I’m taking quite well in advance and gather the fiddly things like travel size toiletries and check I have everything in stock about a week beforehand. I also check if I have enough of the various prescription drugs I’m on around then. I tend to put clothes and shoes I want to take on one side a day or two in advance of the trip. The actual packing doesn’t take long at all so if I’m not leaving until mid-morning or later I will probably do that
on the day.

Who prints things off in this day and age?!

I'm a night before packer but usually start gathering stuff a couple of days in advance. Always pack toiletries on the morning of departure.

You don’t have to “end up washing” anything. They know where the washing machine is in the house.

Violetparis · 09/01/2024 19:32

Plan early but pack the night/day before.
