American style fridge

My husband is determined to to get an American style fridge for our home. He thinks they're brilliant and feels as the kids get older they are worth it. I'm not convinced.
We have all integrated appliances currently and an American fridge would stick out so I understand this more on me preferring cosmetic.
I don't feel the kitchen is big enough to accommodate an American fridge.
I would also loose another press in order to fit this in which is where I keep my cleaning/dog stuff.
I also find fresh fruit and salads don't last any length of time so need to be topped up anyway whereas I think his idea is we do one big monthly shop as opposed to weekly.
American style fridges are heavier on electricity and I'd imagine a pain to clean which will fall on me.
Can anyone convince me otherwise please 😂

I don't get the appeal, TBH

You could compare the capacity with a regular fridge. As I recall, they don't actually hold much more

Agree salad won't last a month, whatever the fridge

I wanted an integrated fridge and freezer when we bought our new kitchen. My husband persuaded me to get an American style fridge/freezer (Samsung). I’m so glad he did, we often have our boys and their families over for a few days at a time and my fridge just takes everything, it’s massive. I love the ice dispenser too. However the freezer is too small for us and we have a separate integrated freezer too. They are more expensive to run but that wasn’t our top consideration. I like to have plenty of capacity, I also have two dishwashers, horses for courses.

We got a Samsung, at my wife's insistence; it's the half sized one, with a smaller freezer compartment. She swore it would go in the back scullery, despite it being bigger than said scullery. The kitchen door had to come off, so's it would go in the kitchen...

"But it was the smallest one in the shop!" she said. Yes, despite me measuring it and the blinking scullery!

It's in an open cupboard type of affair now and it's not too bad, but it's still not plumbed in for ice!

I looked them when we were doing our kitchen - but rapidly came to realise that although they may look big, in actual fact their capacity can be relatively small. If you have the built in water or ice-dispenser, that takes a huge chunk out of the freezer side - and the freezer side is usually much smaller too. In the end, I went for tall, side-by-side separate freezer and fridge. With no ice/water dispenser. Instead, there's a built-in ice-maker on the inside of the freezer door.

Bubblesgun · 09/01/2024 13:11

I have the siemens double doors fridge on top qnd double doors freezer underneath with draws inside.
it has no water ice dispenser because I have a quooker and a ice drawer so I preferred full capacity inside.
it is a matt black.

i bloody love love love it. I highly recommend

Babyblackbear78 · 09/01/2024 13:22

I have the American side by side without water or ice dispenser as I felt they took up too much room. I love it- was so handing at Christmas with all the food and left overs with room to spare. Wish I had one years ago!

Just need to get a dishwasher, new oven and hob, extractor fan and work tops to fit it where it will eventually live lol expense expense expense!

Youcannotbeseriousreally · 09/01/2024 13:25

Nope. Never wanted one. Much prefer integrated appliances.

Also, who can even afford enough food to fill those things these days?!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/01/2024 13:28

When we redid our kitchen, we went for an integrated fridge freezer for the aesthetics (plus our kitchen wasn't very big). But we had another FF in the garage. We would never have managed with just the kitchen one whilst there were 4 of us, especially as at the time we lived rurally.

If you've got somewhere for a 2nd FF then I'd opt for an integrated one in the kitchen. If I lived somewhere with easy access to shops (as we do now) then there's no need for an American style FF.

CoffeeWithCheese · 09/01/2024 13:33

Had to give ours up when we moved (really new kitchen here with integrated appliances so couldn't fit it without dismantling the kitchen) and we all really miss it. Not so much the space, but the ice/water.

Changingmynameyetagain · 09/01/2024 13:34

We have an American FF, I love it.
Because it’s so open I can see everything in it and we rarely miss something lurking at the back, I can also fit my biggest stock pot in it so I can chuck leftovers overnight if I don’t want to bag it straight away.
The freezer side is quite small because of the ice maker but it suits our family.

adultsizedogbed · 09/01/2024 13:34

I love ours , we designed the kitchen around it so it is 'built in' .. they do look awful if just bunged on the end of a kitchen IMO .

Teddleshon · 09/01/2024 13:35

Couldn’t live without ours - no built in water or ice dispenser so masses of space. Love the capacity, especially at Christmas or with a house full. Also love the fact that I can store all my toasted nuts and condiments etc in the fridge which keeps them fresher far longer.

Louloulouenna · 09/01/2024 13:36

Love ours - love being able to refrigerate large puddings and giant casserole dishes etc without having to rearrange everything.

This is exactly what we have.

Blueskyformiles · 09/01/2024 13:45

I couldn’t be without ours tbh. Can fit so much stuff into it, wouldn’t want to go back to a normal size fridge/ freezer now. The ice/ cold water machine is a godsend in the summer too.

legofchair · 09/01/2024 14:11

I have one, I was outvoted by Dh and the children as I wanted an integrated larder fridge and larder freezer. They were right. We have had it 10 years, for the plumbed in ice and water dispenser alone it was worth it. Ours is banked either side with a larder cupboard and has a cupboard over the top so appears built in rather than on the end of a run. It does stick out due to the doors but it doesn't bother me.

The freezer for us is small and we do have a larder freezer in the pantry but I shop at Costco so 14 frozen salmon pieces, 6 pack of bacon sort of shopping. I don't buy pizza but I think you would struggle to get a frozen pizza in the American fridge freezer if side by side.

InTheRainOnATrain · 09/01/2024 14:16

Love it just for the filtered chilled water and ice on tap. We have the style with the freezer drawers at the bottom. The fridge is huge and we barely use the freezer anyway- it’s current contents are oven chips, a pack of fish fingers, bag of peas and a bottle of vodka!

I’m an American, and my kitchen doesn’t have room for an American huge FF. I have a small freezer on top, and manage just fine as a singleton.

TTCMama88 · 09/01/2024 14:48

I absolutely love mine! We cook A LOT so a big freezer is a plus. We love the ice dispenser too, so handy, especially when we have people over.

Spacie · 09/01/2024 14:49

I have just replaced a defunct freestanding larder fridge and a 20 year old chest freezer with an American FF (sited where the chest freezer used to be on the way to the back door). No water dispenser or built in ice maker. It's the type with a wide fridge section across the top. The fridge is much larger than my old one and the freezer about 20% smaller but because it's larder style with interior drawers I don't think I'll be losing stuff like I did in the deep pit of the chest freezer.

All I can say is I'm currently madly in love with it and wondering why I didn't do this sooner. As an added bonus I've freed up the space where the old fridge used to be.

anothernamechangeagainsndagain · 09/01/2024 14:52

I've had one for 15 years now, wouldn't go back to normal ones.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 09/01/2024 14:56

We've never had the built in water dispenser, I don't see the point. We keep 2 x 1litre bottles of water in the fridge, use one, top it up then move to the 2nd one. Rinse and repeat. So we've always got cold water. Same with ice, we have stacking ice trays in the freezer so we always have ice. When we use up a tray, fill it up again.

The advantage of DIY ice and water is that you can move the bottles and trays around if you need more space

dawnofthenugget · 09/01/2024 15:06

We've had American fridges for about 15 years. The fridge side is great, but not much room in the freezer. Cold water and ice is lovely though. We have another tall freezer in the utility room and a second fridge too for drinks.

GasPanic · 09/01/2024 15:08

They consume a lot more energy.

So if you want the carbon footprint of an American, you can buy the fridge freezer, the SUV etc.
