To ask him not to smoke weed next to me?

Weedonparkbench · 08/01/2024 14:22

Was waiting for someone earlier so I got a coffee and sat down on a bench.

About 5 minutes later a man sits down on the opposite side of the bench (would rather he didn’t but I can’t really complain as I don’t own the bench) and immediately lights up a joint/spliff or whatever. I can tell what it is because it reeks.

i politely asked him not to smoke next to me. He told me he wasn’t hurting anyone, and that he would smoke where he wanted.

i explained that I didn’t want to be breathing in second hand weed smoke.
his response “so find somewhere else to sit, I have as much right to be here as anyone else.”

I did move after that, but AIBU to ask that someone doesn’t smoke drugs next to me on a public bench? If he had been there first, I just wouldn’t have sat down, but I felt really awkward and uncomfortable.

You're entirely responsible for your own health. I'd say it was up to you to move.

Stephy1024 · 08/01/2024 14:28

I mean you can ask but I wouldn't actually expect him to stop. Your well within your rights to move if you don't like something.

iamstrugglingalot · 08/01/2024 14:28

I think smoking drugs in a public place and so near to another person is a selfish and twatty move so I'm on your side here OP.

MarjorieStuartBaxter · 08/01/2024 14:31

He's fucking rude you were there first

Biscuithelp · 08/01/2024 14:34

You were there first!

CoffeeCantata · 08/01/2024 14:38

That would annoy me. It's a dubious activity at the best of times - but people seem so bold about flouting the law, not to mention giving others the pleasure of their horrible stinky habit. Go and do it somewhere private!!

Surely they get the fact that smoking weed is just as anti-social as tobacco??? Have they been living under a stone for the last decade or so?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/01/2024 14:40

I think as you were there first he should move if he wants to do something anti social, like smoking - whether weed or tobacco.

Crunchymum · 08/01/2024 14:41

I think the fact he sat down next to you (you already being there) and proceeded to smoke weed tells you all you need to know about the kind of arseshat he is.

I'd have not even bothered to ask him to move given he didn't have the sense or decency not to do it in the first place.

oneflewoverthe · 08/01/2024 14:41

He was a twat. No reasoning with him though.

Justleaveitblankthen · 08/01/2024 14:42

Where was this? In a shopping area or town centre you could have informed the management.
I was walking my dogs in a woods yesterday and the smell of weed was so strong I thought someone was in bushes beside me.
Eventually spotted them half a mile away in the far distance.

OneTC · 08/01/2024 14:44

The bloke is a prick

TheSlantedOwl · 08/01/2024 14:58

He’s a selfish twat. It reeks worse than cigarettes. He should have fucked off but of course someone that anti social and entitled would never think about being considerate.

GinAndJuice99 · 08/01/2024 15:08

He's an arsehole. Personally I can't stand it when someone's vape cloud blows in my face when I'm walking down the street, and this is much worse than that. Probably not worth your trouble confronting him about it though. If he was a reasonable person he wouldn't be doing it in the first place.

GreyhpundGirl · 08/01/2024 15:10

You're not being unreasonable at all, there seems to have been a lot more 'open' smoking with no effort to be discrete. I took my 3 year old to a small play park recently, it was about 11am and a lad (not a teenager, maybe early 20s) was sitting on the swings with a spliff on. Why on earth would he think that's okay, but especially with a small child close by!

Luckingfovely · 08/01/2024 15:11

You were unreasonable in one way only: expecting someone who sits down at a public bench to smoke week to listen to you.

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 08/01/2024 15:12

Of course he's a twat, anyone who sits down next to a non-smoker and then lights up clearly doesn't care about others and so is unlikely to move if asked. Weed reeks 100 x more than tobacco smoke, and both are worse than vaping stench, though I hate all 3!

greengreengrass25 · 08/01/2024 15:12

How awful and selfish of him

Why did he have to do it near to someone else already there

AmethystSparkles · 08/01/2024 15:16

It was very rude of him but some people think it’s normal. However, do be careful when confronting strangers….I used to do it all the time but I’m wary these days because you just never know if the person is going to become aggressive.

sophiebrooks123 · 08/01/2024 15:18
  1. you were there first
  2. its illegal

you are not unreasonable

DeeCeeCherry · 08/01/2024 15:21

He's an idiot. But you dont want trouble with people like that. I HATE weed being smoked next to me. Stink gets in your hair and your clothes. Imagine if you were going somewhere important shortly afterwards, you'd have turned up smelling of weed. & weed smokers always think they dont smell of weed. But they do. Especially if they smoke skunk. Same as cigarette smokers (& I was a cigarette smoker in the past) reek of cigarette smoke but think they don't.

I'm not particularly anti-smoking I simply don't want people smoking next to me, and if they arrive and light up then I will tell them so. Equally I wont go and sit next to a smoker then expect them to move. I reserve the right not to smell like I smoke weed, when I don't.

Coconutter24 · 08/01/2024 15:30

Like you said you don’t own the bench therefore cannot stop people sitting or smoking on it so YABU for asking. Obviously not unreasonable to not want to be near it but if your not happy sat next to someone smoking weed it is on you to move

ManateeFair · 08/01/2024 15:30

It's not just antisocial - it's illegal.

Legally, someone does have the right smoke a cigarette outdoors if they want to, even when sitting next to someone else. But they don't have have any right at all to smoke weed anywhere, let alone in a public place.

It doesn't matter that she doesn't own the bench. If someone's smoking weed, they are breaking the law, and therefore they have absolutely zero right to do it anywhere.

It's on them to not commit a criminal offence regardless. What's next? "If you're not happy to have your car broken into then it's on you to not park it on your drive."

The tolerance of druggies on MN is insane. Luckily, I don't see it in real life.

Willyoujustbequiet · 08/01/2024 15:36

Any smoker that lights up next to a non smoker without asking is an absolute twat.
