To ask him not to smoke weed next to me?

Was waiting for someone earlier so I got a coffee and sat down on a bench.

About 5 minutes later a man sits down on the opposite side of the bench (would rather he didn’t but I can’t really complain as I don’t own the bench) and immediately lights up a joint/spliff or whatever. I can tell what it is because it reeks.

i politely asked him not to smoke next to me. He told me he wasn’t hurting anyone, and that he would smoke where he wanted.

i explained that I didn’t want to be breathing in second hand weed smoke.
his response “so find somewhere else to sit, I have as much right to be here as anyone else.”

I did move after that, but AIBU to ask that someone doesn’t smoke drugs next to me on a public bench? If he had been there first, I just wouldn’t have sat down, but I felt really awkward and uncomfortable.

Yes they don’t have zero right to do it anywhere however that doesn’t mean to say they have to move cos someone asked them to (I’m fully aware it’s illegal and he shouldn’t be doing it) but people need to take accountability for their own health and preferences. If OP doesn’t like it she needs to remove herself

Im of the opinion that everyone has to try and rub along together when in public. This may have annoyed me, but I would have forgotten about it the second I got home. Why get yourselves so worked up about it? You can’t control others any more than others can control you.

I have no tolerance for drug users and strongly disagree with it.

Well.you can ask but he didn't move ,you can't force him to move ,personally I would have just found it easier all round to move myself

I smoke and wouldn't smoke near a non smoker because it's rude. I wouldn't care if I was sat there and someone came along and smoked, but I wouldn't assume that of anyone else

Very rude and of course you were right to ask him to move, but at the same time it was highly unlikely he would care... given that he's someone who sat down next to someone and started smoking weed in public.

I got an earful for asking someone not to smoke next to me when I was very heavily pregnant at a bus stop. I couldn't move as there were no other seats, and I was damned if I was going to stand while she had a nice sit down and a cigarette.

Smokers are thick, I wouldn't even have tried to speak to him, I'd just move.

It's a public place. Unfortunately you don't get to dictate where people smoke in public. Its unfortunate he didn't have the savvy to think it might be a bit unsociable to light up next to you but sometimes people sit on a bench and smoke.

In the U.K. doctors do not prescribe smoking products, of any form, to patients. Because they’re not morons.

Not unreasonable to ask of course.. But you have to move if you dont want to be around it. He doesn't have to do what you ask.

Op you're absolutely right. However I would really urge caution confronting such people as they can often turn violent and the justice system will be of no use at all. I would love to be as brave as you but next time I would just move on and remain safe.

There are plenty of clinics operating in the open prescribing weed for vaporisation. But you don't have to, it's just the recommended roa

@OneTC so people are getting a prescription for Adven and then not taking it as advised (using the vaporiser provided) but instead smoking it (presumably mixed with tobacco)? I'm struggling to believe that people are that stupid. Oh wait, no I'm not, people really are stupid.
