I am in my mid 20's so was not alive during the 90's when The Duchess of York was apparently seen as a disgrace by the public and media. Can someone who remembers that period tell me about the toe sucking scandal and whether the royal family banishing her for many years was seen as an appropriate response or if the tabloids over sensationalised her antics at the time?

I do find it galling that Camilla is queen now. The late queen said she would be known as Queen Consort but Charles ignored that.

What? Galling? She is the wife of the King. Wives of Kings are styled as Queen First Name and have been for centuries. The Queen most certainly didn’t want her to be ‘known as Queen Consort’ - given Camilla’s first name is not ‘Consort’ she would never be titled as ‘Queen Consort’. I think you’re getting confused because she IS the Queen Consort however. Do you understand how Consort titles work? The late Queen Elizabeth II’s mum was Queen Elizabeth. Two kings before that we had Queen Mary. They were both Queen Consorts. Prince Philip was a Consort. But they don’t have Consort in their actual titles.

The late Queen about a year before she died expressed her happiness for Camilla to be styled as Queen BTW.

If we are going to accept having a royal family, then the wife of the King is the Queen. Once you start cherry picking the rules, the whole concept of monarchy, as an institution, becomes questionable.

It is questionable. I find it harder to swallow than I used to. It feels like an anachronism now.
