To think Hannah and Tina were as pretty as Rachel (S Club)

Really random but I’ve always thought this, an S Club song came up on my shuffle recently and was making me wonder if anyone else thought the same. Rachel Stevens was attractive but I never really got why she was treated as the sex bomb of the group and the other girls ignored? Facially I would have said Hannah was the conventionally prettiest, was it just that she had more of a beanpole figure/children’s TV presenter energy and Rachel was a bit more sultry so the men’s mags focused on her? Personally I actually thought Tina was the most striking, especially early on with the straight black bob.

That’s just the role she was given by the musical execs that put the band together. Manufactured pop for you

Sallybegood · 27/12/2023 00:37

Musical execs can shape your persona but they can’t actually decide who men find attractive. I don’t think she particularly wore scantier clothes than the others while she was in the band. Every guy seemed to agree that she was gorgeous and none of them ever seemed to have a crush on the two equally good/better looking girls standing next to her, I found it strange.

I think she did slightly benefit from Rachel Green on Friends being a big sex symbol at the same time, and having the same name and a similar look.

So was by far the sexiest.

Catlover77 · 27/12/2023 00:48

Rachel was stunning. Hannah was cute.

Butchyrestingface · 27/12/2023 00:51

Rachel was the sultriest looking of the 4 (poor Jo!). Tina looked great then and great now.

KrisAkabusi · 27/12/2023 00:57

I don’t think she particularly wore scantier clothes than the others while she was in the band.

She was constantly in her pants on the covers of magazines like Loaded and FHM. There was definitely a big push to sell her as the sexy one.

I guess it’s a chicken/egg argument, but I’d have said she was on the cover of those magazines because men already perceived her as the sexy one.

Hannah was the baby Spice equivalent - cute rather than sultry.
Tina i'd say the Posh one, a bit standoffish
Jo a bit more Ginger / Scary.
Rachel was Def pushed as the sultry sext one.

fatherliamdeliverance · 27/12/2023 01:07

I think they were all equally physically attractive in their different ways but Rachel seemed to stand out as being sexier and less as smiley TV presenter-y. Almost like she was hanging back a beat rather than rushing forward with enthusiasm. Perhaps she was more naturally reserved which read as slightly mysterious and interesting. It sounds very silly but I have a memory of her hair colour being more complex than just plain bright blonde or dark which might have made her look more sophisticated and sultry. Maybe the Jennifer Aniston served her association as PP mentions thanks to that.

Was she stunning, though? She’s pretty and I’m not trying to turn this into a thread dissing her looks, I just don’t think she was objectively any prettier than Hannah or Tina.

Also not dissing Jo - she had the voice the whole band was based around. A shame about how she behaved on Big Brother, but that’s for a different thread.

I thought that Tina was the prettiest by quite a long way, so I agree with you. I think the poster who said that Rachel's popularity was linked to Rachel Green had a good point.

Who everyone finds attractive is very socially manufactured, pushing one member as "the sexy one" to make the majority agree with it would definitely work.. and did work. And will work again.

Who the majority find most physically attractive has very little to do with actual looks, and a lot to do with who we're told is hot.

There have been cultures with very different ideas of what is physically attractive to what we have now, simply because it IS possible to control (Or influence) who finds who and what attractive.

A lot of it depends on who your mates find attractive too... or who music execs and magazines say your mates find attractive!

yellowsmileyface · 27/12/2023 09:22

I remember having a conversation about this with my mum back when they were big. We'd heard Tina referred to as "the ugly one" which we both couldn't understand as she's beautiful! We agreed it was unfair how Rachel was branded "the pretty one" when they're all similarly attractive.

I don't remember their show very well but I seem to recall their band personas were pushed a lot through their characters so that probably has something to do with it.

VainAbigail · 27/12/2023 09:29

You don’t like Jo very much, do you! Not mentioned her at all until you say you’re not ‘dissing’ her and you mention her voice. That’s it. She doesn’t fit your mould of ‘pretty’ and you clearly dislike her. Also she was on BB in 2007! Nearly 17 years ago and you’re bringing up her ‘behaviour’?! Let it go op, she’s changed since so get over it and stop sounding like a bitchy teenie bopper.

Hello Jo.

DaisyAster · 27/12/2023 09:35

They were all incredibly young and gorgeous!

Lotrehin · 27/12/2023 09:35

Anyway it was all marketing. Marketing can definitely make people into sex symbols, both men and women. If you constantly tell the public that a person is sexy then they will be seen that way.

Tina looks incredible these days btw.

LadyKenya · 27/12/2023 09:36

Jo's behaviour was deplorable on BB, that is true. I am more interested in how people behave, rather than how they look, which they have little, to no control over.

doriangraybutimthepaintingintheattic · 27/12/2023 09:37

There's an old image doing the rounds of Tina in a red dress and I honestly wonder how she wasn't marketed as the sexy one. She looked phenomenal but as PP said she was marketed as the ugly one because she didn't fit the criteria of the time I think. She was and is stunning.

crostini · 27/12/2023 09:40

Tina is incredibly beautiful. If it could choose to look like any woman, she'd be the one!
Confused how she could ever be described as ugly, that's beyond silly.

quisensoucie · 27/12/2023 09:42

@LadyKenya I was rather hoping that somewhere 'supportive' such as MN wouldn't perpetuate it!
But I forget that women en-masse can be worse than men!

LadyKenya · 27/12/2023 09:47

Then you are in for a disappointment@quisensoucie . It is like that a lot on here, and then people berate men for treating women like pretty accessories.

VainAbigail · 27/12/2023 09:47

Not at all @Lotrehin
