To believe I should have a clue how to do make up by 50?

Sorry this is a shameless repost from beauty as it got no responses. Please can anyone recommend a few make up essentials I need now that I've hit 50 and my make up/beauty collection is so completely and utterly random. I don't have a system or ritual for make up and feel a bit lost. What are the basics that you can't live without? I'm thinking skin care, foundation, concealer, blusher kind of thing. Happy to pay for good quality products.

I wouldn't feel too ashamed.... 29 here and a moisturiser, foundation, bit of eyebrow pencil and mascara is my go too!.

Still doesn't look perfect but I'm a work of art!

something2say · 26/12/2023 19:47

Serum, moisturiser.
Some sort of base foundation.

Glittery shadow, but usually none.
Two shades of eyeliner. Brown, bigger flick....then smudge it. Then a Bobbi Brown glittery eye liner inside the brown. Game changer.

Bit of blush.
Bit of lip balm.

Do eyes and cheeks, that's my tip.
And cheeks are high and back now we are old.

Watch vids on how to do things.
I do a Helena Bonham Carter updo from a vid.

Enjoy!! You're going to look stunning.

Can you pay for a make up lesson? I did this in my 30s. Really helped . Could probably do with doing it again, now I am 50.

Also pretty sure you can find online make tutorials for women in their 50s.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 26/12/2023 19:53

I don't have a clue and I'm 49. I almost never wear it.

I did recently discover primer. Watched a YouTube video as needed make up for a work thing and it's decimate a difference.

MakeUpEssentials · 26/12/2023 19:54

Thank you for your responses! I have checked out the tutorials but I find them a bit overwhelming.. they seem to use SO many products and go through the application so quickly. A make up lesson is actually a really good idea!!

I really do want to wear make up but properly, so it accentuates my features. I really like the glowy, dewy look. I have decent skin, with one nice almond shaped eye and one that's a bit hooded and droopy!!

Go to your local John Lewis if you have one nearby and have a browse round. Ideally first thing in the morning when they're not too busy- I've always found the ladies incredibly helpful and will show you how to use the products they want you to buy- just be happy with the way it looks on you, and don't feel obliged to stick to one brand; just say, I'll have a browse round and come back.

Alexandra anele on YouTube is really good
She does videos of whole looks and then stuff that breaks things down

Skin video

Hooded eyes

Eyeshadow placement

I’m 48 and like elf halo glow it’s a dupe for Charlotte tilbury. Gives a nice glow.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 26/12/2023 20:01

Slightly younger here but I've I invested more in serum and moisturizer. Liked a few products from beauty and the boutique and I liked the simplicity of the tutorials ( like you I found many used too many products).

Merryoldgoat · 26/12/2023 20:02

if you get your skin in good condition you’ll need very little so chemical exfoliant, serum and moisturiser and eye cream for a few weeks will really help.

Nice CC cream, translucent powder, mascara and a light lip gloss and cream blush will work wonders.

MakeUpEssentials · 26/12/2023 20:03

Thanks @DillyDallyingAllDay . That's a good idea as well, although wouldn't they just be trying to push their own brand whether they were right for me or not?

If you go to any store with a Charlotte Tilbury concession and ask for one of the looks on display the girls will do your face up to match that look and you get two products free! Done it twice and it introduced me to some really good staples for my eyebrows etc. Helped because you pick the look go start with that you're drawn to and the girl was able to pick out what I like about it and discuss what else might work for me. It's about 35 quid I think but we'll worth it.

You have to scroll through her channel a bit but she has a lot of stuff like how to blend eyeshadow, where to apply blush etc

MakeUpEssentials · 26/12/2023 20:06

@GirlsAloudReturnMadeMyYEAR brilliant. I've seen those boards with the different looks. I use the Pinkgasm and absolutely love it. Will see if I can make an appointment

Clueless here, 57 and not a scoobys how to do it. I never learnt, and only very occasionally have ever had the inclination or occasion to try.

Itsallsostressful · 26/12/2023 20:07

I'm 52 and I love the Trinny London stuff. Very easy to apply cream blush and eye colour. The BFF cream is a very light base (think BB cream). Trinny does great tutorials and you see how quick and easy it is to apply 😊

Dixiechickonhols · 26/12/2023 20:08

I also had lash lift and henna brows done at beautician this year for first time which make me look more done.

the80sweregreat · 26/12/2023 20:10

I have clown hands and can't paint ( very well
) my right hand nails as right handed , can't work out how to do eye liner and don't get me started on how to style hair or use straighteners either ! Useless at all of it

stomachamaleon · 26/12/2023 20:11

I went to boots after a massive change skin wise due to illness and the no7 lady was lovely and helped me replenish and revitalise my make up bag.
Most days I wear the bare minimum. I have just never really been bothered. It's just now being older I see the benefit.

verdantverdure · 26/12/2023 20:21

ericataylor2347 might be a good place to start.

It's not about the products it's what you do with them.
