To think The Family Stone is a terrible film

Thus used to be my all time favourite Christmas film. Just sat down to watch and enjoy on Christmas afternoon and it's really horrible. The Diane Keaton character is an awful bitchy one who laughs at nothing all the time and Amy behaves appalingly. I'm so disappointed

I watched it when it first came out and can’t remember anyhthing about it, other than I thought it was pretty miserable and did not enjoy it!

Mittens1717 · 25/12/2023 17:08

I watched this for the first time last week and I thought the mum (Diane Keaton) was really awful to Meredith, also Amy was horrible too, I wouldn't have stuck around too long if they were my in laws!

crochetmonkey74 · 25/12/2023 17:10

Yeah I cant believe I ever liked it! They actively bully her.
I do still like the house and clothes and the kitchen and all the crockery is fantastic

I love this film, not watched it this year yet.

Magnificentbeast · 25/12/2023 17:16

I didn't like it. Some of the characters were horrible.

Longlazyday · 25/12/2023 17:16

Yep! They’re delightfully awful. Love the film.

StrawberryWater · 25/12/2023 17:17

The family are so horrible to Meredith and they dare call her a snob etc.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 25/12/2023 17:17

Oh I love this film because it's more real than a traditional Christmas film. They are all AWFUL to her, but that's what families can be like sometimes. And tbf, they seem to get over her swapping brothers in the prologue so they must be OK at heart....

LaviniasBigBloomers · 25/12/2023 17:17

Epilogue, not prologue!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 25/12/2023 17:18

I love it because it feels like an authentic family dynamic.

BingoMarieHeeler · 25/12/2023 17:19

I love the movie and the aesthetic but not the family.

Watched Christmas with the Coopers this week which me and DH bawled through 😂 by the same people and with Diane Keaton, great cast. But felt like it was just the beginning and end of a story, no middle. But again, something about those directors/producers I guess, I just enjoy their terrible plot-great cast movies 😄

some people love this film. I follow a blogger/IG'er who watches it like 100x a year.

my take on the treatment of Meredith is she's a bit of a scapegoat for what is going on in the Mum's life with cancer/grief/trauma/not wanting things to change. I loathe Amy though and just can't find redeeming qualities in her. Also I can't see how up tight Meredith can be happy with the surfer dude other brother. Seems impossible to work long term.

Love the decor and real life-ness of it.

Poppyseason · 25/12/2023 17:25

@BingoMarieHeeler - also watched Christmas with the Coopers this week and am always surprised it doesn't get as much attention as Family Stone.

I've seen this advertised, would you recommend?

Meredith is a bit of a dumb and ignorant cow, though, isn’t she?

I love the film for not being cutter cooker in some of the writing of characters i.e Meredith’s (would this be in a Hollywood film these days?). The ending is rather subversive and all the better for it - they could easily have written the Diane Keaton character as surviving her breast cancer.

KylieJennersMakeUpSponge · 25/12/2023 17:37

YANBU

They’re such pricks to Meredith just because she didn’t want cuddles with strangers. Poor woman has never met these people before and they’re vile to her. Especially the mum. I was glad when she popped her clogs 🙊 also I hated that Dermot Mulroney’s character instantly fell in love with his fiancé’s sister after one conversation about an Eskimo. Ridiculous.

REALLY fancy Luke Wilson in this though but him and SJP had zero chemistry

I don't see her as dumb or ignorant. She's just shy and out of her comfort zone of work

I really dislike it. Everyone treats Meredith so awfully because she has not been indoctrinated into the cult. It's quite despicable.

KylieJennersMakeUpSponge · 25/12/2023 17:43

Yes.

Also the only grandchild gets consistently ignored and while they’re all hating on Meredith it’s fine for the sister’s husband to miss Christmas Day with his pregnant wife and child entirely

KylieJennersMakeUpSponge · 25/12/2023 17:44

It also pisses me off that the child is allowed to draw on Meredith’s shoes. A child old enough to know better. I’d have been annoyed too

diddl · 25/12/2023 18:15

It's a horrible film.

A family of bullies.

Doesn't the sister dislike the SJP character because she took her to a "posh(?" restaurant.

They others seem determined to dislike her before they meet her!

I loved it when the Dad gave Meredith what for after her ignorant and wholly inappropriate take on gay adoption. Then the stupid bitch ran off - boo hoo!

It wasn’t about gay adoption at all. Diane Keaton said she wished all her sons would be gay and SJP said she wouldn’t want that because life was hard enough without having to deal with homophobia. They over reacted because they hated her anyway

Exactly!
