To have lost 10 stone of weight in four months

OP posts:
Pinkpinkplonk · 23/12/2023 17:35

Maybe they’re ill

Dacadactyl · 23/12/2023 17:36

Depends how fat they were surely? I mean if someone was 40 stone, it'd be easy to lose 10 stone in 4 months if they went fully into salad mode, I expect?

CharmedCult · 23/12/2023 17:36

Gastric sleeve?

BlueberryVelvet · 23/12/2023 17:37

I lost 8 stone in a year. It literally fell off me.

Doggymummar · 23/12/2023 17:38

Maybe they ditched there boyfriend or partner, I lost 12 stone overnight once and happily told everyone

Redglitter · 23/12/2023 17:39

Not a chance in that space of time. Even a gastric sleeve suggests about 12/14lbs month

ManateeFair · 23/12/2023 17:40

Do they look like they’ve lost 10 stone? And does it matter, really?

Iam4eels · 23/12/2023 17:40

Depends how they're losing it and how big they were to begin with. A low calorie diet alongside an active lifestyle, it's entirely possible.

Iam4eels · 23/12/2023 17:42

There was a news story a while ago about a man who was 23 stone and lost 10 stone in 20 weeks. 7lbs a week isn't an impossible amount of you have an active job or do lots of exercise and are strict about what you eat. Obviously it's not for everybody and most people tend to take a bit longer to gradually lose weight but it's not impossible.

distinctpossibility · 23/12/2023 17:44

I was 9.5 stone (BMI 24) and lost a stone in 3 weeks during an intensely stressful period earlier this year. I was running a lot because it was the only thing that calmed me, I had the shits because of anxiety and I was eating very badly. Obviously half of it came back on when the situation began to pass but I can see that in 16-18 weeks and from a higher starting point it could be possible. Not hugely healthy though.

larkstar · 23/12/2023 17:47

amputation?

YaWeeFurryBastard · 23/12/2023 17:49

BlueberryVelvet · 23/12/2023 17:37

I lost 8 stone in a year. It literally fell off me.

Well done but that’s 20% less in three times as long!

ANightmareBeforeChristmas · 23/12/2023 17:52

Depends what they weighed to start with. If they were super-morbidly obese and went on a VLCD or had bariatric surgery, it's possible. You need to look at it as a % of their weight lost rather than an amount of weight to assess whether it is realistic.

Comedycook · 23/12/2023 17:55

If you're very very overweight you do initially lose weight a lot faster than those who start off at a lower weight

Allmarbleslost · 23/12/2023 17:56

I don't think that's possible, even with weight loss surgery

ThreeTreeHill · 23/12/2023 17:57

Yeah I wouldn't believe them

That's a ridiculous amount. When you go through say stress or illness you can lose that first stone very quickly but a lot of that is water weight, that's beyond the amount expected with barbaric surgery.

MooQuackNeigh · 23/12/2023 18:02

I would be very sceptical unless there were quite unusual circumstances as mentioned above. Gastric sleeve, they were 20st overweight to begin with or lost because of illness.

Do you know the context?

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 23/12/2023 18:02

I went through a phase of watching my 600lb life. Some people would lose 150lbs plus really quickly once they were put on a diet and exercise program. I’d say it’s possible but you’d have to be really very obese to start with.

GreatGateauxsby · 23/12/2023 18:02

10 stone needs a 490,00 kcal deficit. approx.

4 months is about 120 days approx

That would require around a 4100 kcal daily deficit.
Not expended cals ... Net cals.

I call bullshit unless it's some 800lbs American guy who has had a gastric sleeve with Dr. Now

labamba007 · 23/12/2023 18:08

Lost 4 stone in 6 weeks - I was very very ill. Doctor said it was like my body was running a marathon every day (even though I just lay in the hospital bed).

greasypolemonkeyman · 23/12/2023 18:14

I can lose 2.5 stone in six weeks with exercise and very low carbs. When my starter started get liver reducing diet for her hated sieve she lost 18lb in 10 years and then another 50lb in 6 weeks.

MissBuffyAnneSummers · 23/12/2023 18:15

Gastric band or serious illness?

OneTC · 23/12/2023 18:16

I have an extremely overweight friend, nearly 30st and he has done similar, once he's lost the first 10 it really slows down then the wheels come off and he can get that 10 back in no time at all

TheFrendo · 23/12/2023 18:16

10 stone is 140 lbs. Four months is 120 days.

That is a ~ 1.2lb a day.

1lb is 454g, 1.2lbs is 530g

Each 1g of fat is ~9 calories.

9 x 530 is 4767 calories.

So, to lose that much fat, the person in question would have to be in a daily deficit of 4800 calories.

I doubt you could do that.

BIWIshYouAMerryChristmas · 23/12/2023 18:18

A friend of ours was seriously ill in hospital and was unable to eat. Fluids only. They lost 2.5 stones in 18 days.

So it's physically possible to lose a lot of weight, quickly - but you'd have to do something very drastic, or be very seriously ill, to lose more than that over a longer period of time.
