Anyone else?! It’s been such a busy month and I can feel myself coming down with the lurgy just in time for Christmas… help, any tips on how to stop it?! (I know realistically I can’t stop it but I don’t want a miserable bug / cold over Christmas!!)

Vicks first defense?
Vitamins but I always think this just makes you feel better about it!
All the drugs and rest and hopefully by Monday you'll be over the worst.

My toddler cough pretty much into my mouth all night so keeping my fingers crossed here too!

Cloud44 · 21/12/2023 15:54

I have got Vicks first défense so will give it a go!
Keeping my fingers crossed that you dodge it!

First defence, lots of fluids and fresh air.
Hopefully you’ll fight it off, but if not it may not be as bad as it could be.

Takentomybed · 21/12/2023 15:58

Echinacea. And hot water with lemon honey and ginger a few times a day.

That's what I go to at the first sign of a cold. For me it seems to reduce the severity of symptoms

Cloud44 · 22/12/2023 13:27

Still trying to fend it off but I don’t think I’m winning the battle!!

Is anyone else having the same struggle?!

I’d take Lemsip mixed with honey-I bought a great one recently that had ginger and lemon in it, they are the only thing that seem to help me.

Olika · 22/12/2023 17:18

Ill since Sunday evening, just getting worse. I keep taking paracetamol, hot water with ginger or tea. I just hope it gets better by Sunday. 🤞🏼

mynameiscalypso · 22/12/2023 17:19

Me too, although not sure if it's a cold or some random virus. I feel pretty shit though and DH is still working so I'm trying to entertain a 4 year old who is so extremely excited about Christmas that he's running around like a mad thing. I just want to sleep.

ValerieMoore · 22/12/2023 17:27

Yes my son had Covid with a high fever in the past few days. I started to get a sore throat a few days ago then a slight temperature yesterday. I’ve just been taking codeine when I need it, and echinacea a couple times a day, because I’ve used it before with a virus and it appeared to make it stop quickly. I feel ok without any codeine the past 24 hours, apart from being exhausted. Hope it’s working.

caramac04 · 22/12/2023 17:33

Definitely First Defence. I’ve been using the Lemsip one and it looks like I’ve avoided the horrid cold my DH and DS have had.

Cloud44 · 22/12/2023 17:38

Ive been taking echinachea and first defence since yesterday but still feel like I’m coming down with it at the worst time 🥲. I know loads of people must get lurgy this time of year and just crack on so I shouldn’t be moaning but just feel a bit sorry for myself!!

I have it at the moment. Terrible hacking cough and sneezing, headache, blocked nose and ears, very very tired and have little appetite or desire to drink all my Christmas booze. Gutted.

ValerieMoore · 22/12/2023 17:45

I know it’s scary. It’s like Christmas is going to be ruined.

VaddaABeetch · 22/12/2023 17:46

I have it too. No appetite. Banging head. Sore throat & sneezing. Going to take a sleepy antihistamine & go to bed early.

xmas13 · 22/12/2023 17:47

I'm only now recovering from a cold from about 5 days ago, my nose was completely blocked for days & I couldn't taste or smell, took covid tests - negative! Woke up yesterday morning and my smell & taste had come back!! Woohoo!

PriOn1 · 22/12/2023 17:48

Can you take a day off? I usually find a day of complete rest sometimes makes all the difference. Sorry if you can’t afford it… it’s such a difficult time to deal with being unwell.

riotlady · 22/12/2023 17:58

I’ve started coughing this morning so in the same boat! Of course DH has had it all week so I’ve been running around after him while he rests, now he’s on the mend and will probably be better for Christmas and I’ve got the sodding thing!

Grimpo · 22/12/2023 18:07

It could be a good idea to do a Covid test. For a lot of people, the current strain is mainly presenting like a bad cold, and it does seem to be spreading very fast.

Mariposistaa · 22/12/2023 18:07

Fresh air. Positive attitude. Healthy food. Exercise

FizzyStream · 22/12/2023 18:15

DH and DS1 have come down with it in the last 24 hours. DH has been downing the first defence but it doesn't seem to be helping.

I've got crippling period pain and general irritability today but don't seem to have the cold yet. I think I had a mild version last week as I was sneezing a lot.

DS2 has the everlasting cough but is otherwise indestructible.....

The only healthy one in our house is the cat. 🐈‍⬛

BeansOnToast32 · 22/12/2023 18:22

Hope you quickly feel better, it's awful feeling unwell at Christmas.

I was so ill last Xmas for 2-3wks, not covid but I completely lost my taste/smell and felt like I'd been run over. Fortunately my taste started coming back a little on Xmas eve so I didn't end up with a completely tasteless Xmas dinner.

This year I have no appetite whatsoever, I weaned off Mirtazapine and finished my last dose almost 7wks ago not realising it would totally destroy my appetite. I have no desire to eat and I'm not enjoying food, I'm forcing it down to survive. 😭 I'm usually a pig and was looking forward to enjoying the festive foods after last year's disaster.

Cloud44 · 22/12/2023 18:22

I did actually test in case and it was negative, hoping it stays that way . Thank you @Mariposistaa , do you think a positive attitude can help
when it comes to the lurgy? I’m willing to try anything this time of year!

Got the same, started as a vague coldy feeling Monday afternoon and turned to full blown cold and hacking cough by next day 😱this afternoon. I’m feeling a lot better than I did - took regular paracetamol and the odd lemsip and ate a lot of oranges and satsumas as didn’t have any vitamin C - hope you feel better quickly OP maybe the younger you are the quicker it will go 🙏🏻I’m 64

Cloud44 · 23/12/2023 12:09

How’s everyone feeling today?
