is being in keeping with the neighbours more important than keeping DH happy

We live in a 'naice' street with lovely neighbours. Everyone puts everyone else's bins out, waters each others' frogs, lends out power tools etc. etc. This Christmas a very few neighbours have outside decorations. They're very tasteful, warm white, gently flickering. Think John Lewis rather than Poundland.

DH wants to get a ginormous blow up snowman to put outside. I've said no on the basis that it doesn't fit in with the street and that our status as 'naice' neighbours will be called into question. DH is sad. Although I generally want to keep DH happy because I luvs him and who else is going to bring me cups of tea in bed at the weekend I've put my foot down about the blow up Santa. For context I'm not keen on blow up anything. Inside or out.

AIBU to think the 'needs' of the street are more important than DH's needs even if my cup of tea is at risk?

The neighbours are not going to bring you cups of tea in bed.
Let him have his snowman! ☃️

geckofrog · 16/12/2023 11:40

Stop watering their frogs and distance yourself a bit. Maybe have a smaller snowman as a compromise?

LammasEve · 16/12/2023 11:42

Anything inflatable outside looks horrendous IMO, except the giant penguin near us that is. We don't put anything at all up but the really garish displays look awful round here. So YANBU about the snowman even if it costs you tea . A high price to pay but worth it.

But YABU saying you water each other's frogs with no further info! You do what?!

DixonD · 16/12/2023 11:42

Am I being really dense? What is watering someone’s frogs?

I have frogs in the garden - real ones. Am I supposed to water them? 😂

LeggyLegsEleven · 16/12/2023 11:42

I want someone to water my frogs AIBU?

ZombieGirl86 · 16/12/2023 11:44

Your obviously just taking the mick, very funny 😁

Was meant to cover plants & animal husbandry in one fell swoop. One neighbour keeps exotic frog type animals which are looked after by the street when he goes away.

Could he put it in your back garden? That way the neighbours aren't subjected to its presence and once it's got dark neither will you, once you close the curtains.

wildwestpioneer · 16/12/2023 11:48

I want frogs to water!

So like frogs but not frogs but exotic. Toads? Newts?

mogtheexcellent · 16/12/2023 11:50

An inflatable dinosaur would be more in keeping surely?

DPotter · 16/12/2023 11:50

I've got a toad - does that count ? I don't water it though

CaroleSinger · 16/12/2023 11:51

StBrides · 16/12/2023 11:51

You are being totally unreasonable to deny him the inflatable decoration because of what the neighbours might think

SnoozeToMe · 16/12/2023 11:52

I’ve never watered my frogs. I do occasionally rescue them from the swimming pool though.

I think it is some sort of newt

Yup. If you don't like it, that is different. But if you are only saying no because of what other people may/ may not think... That is odd.

He might object on the (reasonable) basis that dinosaurs are not Christmassy.

Unless they are wearing a Santa hat of course.

Maybe you need an inflatable frog instead

EmptyYoghurtPot · 16/12/2023 11:54

I think my outside decorations are lovely, although ours are the only ones in our street that are multicoloured. I’m not sure how my neighbours feel about it but next door are still feeding my cats when I go away. (We don’t have frogs).

pictoosh · 16/12/2023 11:58

Ugh no, no giant inflatable tack in my front garden thanks. Just being honest. I'm not snobby but it's not to my taste. No no and thrice no.

I am not aware of frogs (or indeed newts) featuring heavily in the nativity. Prepared to be proven wrong.

There is a section of my estate that has mansions worth anywhere between 800 - 2 mil. Some have extremely classy Christmas exteriors and some have inflatable Santa's. Go for it! It's all in a happy Christmas spirit

Vanillalime · 16/12/2023 12:02

Ooh, I think it all depends on what snowman inflatable you are talking about. Just a generic one and YANBU, but if you are taking about The Snowman from the animated movie then YABU, as this is a very classy piece of decor & will only make your street look naice-r ⛄️

Ah so a John Lewis (or even a Heals) snowman would be ok..
